We had our daughter meet the tutor at the local library four times a week after school for six weeks. She went from a low C to a solid A. What more can we ask for?

I would be very happy to provide a reference for Roy. I highly recommend him. My daughter started tutoring with Roy in the 9th grade and continued with him the next two years (10th & 11th grades). When she started she was taking the accelerated Math class and was having some troubles with her teacher's style of teaching. Roy was able to fill in the gaps for her and give her the confidence (and knowledge) to succeed in the class. In the first reporting period after she started tutoring with Roy, she brought her grade up from a B- to a B+. That may not seem like a big jump but she was in a very competitive class and the teacher was a hard grader, so she was thrilled. After 9th grade, she continued to have the same teacher for the next two years and she also made it onto the Math Team (which the same teacher also led). Although she had by now gotten used to her teacher's way of teaching, Roy was extremely helpful in explaining some of the concepts more thoroughly and helping her when she was stuck with homework problems. He also helped her prepare for quizzes and major tests as well as the more complex math problems she had to face when competing on the math team. Roy was always patient and explained things to my daughter in a way she could understand. He also gave her different ways of thinking about solving a problem that she wasn't getting in class. I asked her about the types of math she studied with Roy and it sounds like it ranged from topics in algebra (mass points, bases, etc.), trigonometry, and calculus. He sometimes used proofs to explain concepts to her. I doubt if there would be any math topic that he couldn't teach, however. He also suggested extra things for her to consider or learn and posed more challenging problems - she called them "enrichment problems." He not only was interested in helping her stay on top of her coursework, he was also trying to stretch her abilities. I think this really paid off for her - not only did she continue to do well in class, but she also got a perfect score on the SAT Math II Subject Test. Hope you don't mind the long-winded review, but I wanted to show how important Roy's tutoring was to my daughter's success in math over the last 3 years. We usually met with him once a week during the school year and I believe his help really made a big impact on my daughter's ability. She also progressed from being insecure about her math abilities to feeling confident enough to tutor new math team members. In her words, she appreciated having a low pressure environment to learn math - a place where she wasn't been graded or judged, but just getting the personalized coaching she needed. She hasn't had to see him on a regular basis this year (she's taking AP Calculus) but will be using him to prep before big tests. PS - I should also mention that Roy is a very nice person as well.

I can describe Chris in one word: PASSION. He is passionate about teaching and all passion he has is turned into energy always giving 100%. He's the best teacher I ever had. With him I feel I'm really learning and improving my English skills. His classes are alternatives and especially original: with Chris is impossible to be bored! He creates his lessons really thinking to his students. He is one of the only teachers who hasn't forgotten how it was to be a student. In my opinion that's amazing! What I like most is that every class is active, dynamic and unique. Chris for me isn't just an English teacher, he's a life coach: he taught to me to face life in a different way, has taught me that we mustn't give up, because the beauty of life is its "non-perfection". Now I know there is always something to be proud of and that something brings us to achieve the big goals. I feel very lucky to have met Chris, he's a great teacher and a great person. There should be more people/teachers like him.

All three of my children attended 4D at different points in their academic career. 4D is great for students of all ages, no matter their skill level-whether to catch up or feel challenged in a way they are not in school. They will get ahead in a supportive relaxed environment where they can work with children their own age. Dr. Yu is extremely knowledgeable about education related issues and has been an invaluable resource for our family, from course selection in high school to preparation for college.

I have received help with multiple writing assignments in school, ACT tutoring, and supplement and college essay help. I do not know what I would do without Lisa! She has helped me go from a B english student to an A student. She has also done a great job working with me on my supplements and college essay. My english teacher and college counselor loved them! For my ACT scores, she helped me get a 33 on my first ACT in the reading section and helped me go from a 24 to a 35 in the english section.

My son is a student at Cranston H.S. West who never struggled with a class until Algebra 2. A Mechanical Engineering degree gave me the knowledge to help my son with math, but unfortunately not the patience. After some research I contacted Jonathon and set up an appointment for an initial one-hour session. I figured I had nothing to lose. During the first session I sat in Jonathon’s living room and casually audited the class. I became more impressed as time progressed. He casually became acquainted with my son and in no time they were comfortable with each other. Jonathon stressed the importance of being organized and having good note-taking skills. He spent a few minutes covering tips to help my son accomplish this. After a couple of one hour sessions my son had a math test (in school) and scored the highest grade in the class. He also told me that he is raising his hand frequently to answer questions. Obviously his confidence was increasing and was feeling good about himself. Jonathon was not just showing my son how to solve problems like teachers do in school, he was teaching him how to understand problems and learn math. My son actually looks forward to his sessions with Jonathon. As an Engineer, a parent, and a former college teacher, I highly recommend Jonathon as a math tutor for anyone requiring help.

Hey-Sung has worked two of my children navigate upper level middle school and high school math classes. She has provided consistent guidance and positive support for both boys. She has made herself available for extra sessions and has helped "on the fly" online or by reviewing "snapshots" by cell phone of problems that they are having trouble with. When transportation and timing have been an issue, she has worked with my older son by skype. Hey-Sung really takes an interest in how they are doing and wants to help them succeed. Perhaps as invested in how they are doing as they are.

Jimmy is a fantastic tutor. He informed himself about the Australian Curriculum and was prepared for my year 5 and year 11 kids from the first day on. He explained the tasks thoroughly and always had examples referencing to music. This created an easy tool for my musician son to understand math and enjoy the teaching. Thanks to Jimmy both kids are up-to-date with their math school work after 8 weeks out of school. Jimmy is kind but also focused on the outcome. Great experience

Educational tutoring on a high school level. Trouble areas in math were addressed and positive reinforcement was the key to success. My son had been tutored by several professional tutors but he never had the confidence that he needed to succeed. We heard about Kristen's services from my son's classmate who was also struggling in math and decided to retain her services. From my initial conversation with Kristen, I immediately took a liking to her. She was professional and personable. She was very receptive to help my son succeed. Kristen was most accommodating when scheduling sessions. My son immediately connected with her and truly felt a sense of confidence after his tutoring session. Kristen is likable and personable. My son's grades greatly improved and he felt a sense of accomplishment. He looked forward to his tutoring sessions because he knew he would have a good sense of understanding his school work after being tutored by Kristen. My daughter, who was a senior in high school, also was tutored by Kristen for "fine tuning" before an exam. She was always amazed with Kristen's ability to simplify the lesson. My son's grades improved significantly. Kristin was a positive reinforcement and truly took an interest in my kids' success. I was happy to refer her to other students. Laurie G.

Carissa was fantastic. I am just starting back after over a decade of not being in school. Needless to say, I was terrified that I would not pass my ‘Fundamental Mathematics’’ class. I hired her to help me weekly. She was very patient and was able to take the information I needed to learn and form it in a way that was not only easy for me to remember but to actually understand. She was very invested in my success and I felt she was there every step of the way. I have now passed my 93 math course and am moving on to the 97 portion. I will definitely being reaching out to her again. She was always punctual and upbeat and never frustrated with me. I would highly recommend her!

I am an older student, finishing my Bachelor's degree later in life, after working many years as a Registered Nurse. As a student of Professor Miller's for two semesters in college, I found that learning Spanish in her classes was a delightful experience. Through her good-natured instruction, I not only learned much of the language, but learned about Spanish culture and norms of everyday life, as well. Although the course was demanding, because of her upbeat and positive attitude learning was fun. As we have kept in touch via e-mail since 2010, I can tell you that she is a nice woman who enjoys teaching and helping people of all ages. She would be an asset in creating a supportive and friendly atmosphere for learning Spanish, in nearly any setting.

I am writing to recommend Julie as an English or Math Tutor. Julie is an excellent and knowledgeable teacher with experience working with high school students. She is strong in both writing and math, achieving an 800 on her math SAT exam. Julie is a recent graduate of Washington University in St. Louis where she tutored students as part of a program called “Books and Basketball STL” in the St. Louis area. In addition, she tutored English and Math while abroad in Tanzania and Peru. During high school, Julie tutored Geometry and has knowledge of advanced mathematics due to her coursework while at Wash U. Julie is patient, relates easily to students and achieves great results with them. I highly recommend Julie for any student looking to improve their skills.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.

      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.
