FABULOUS!!!!! Attentive to our needs, read my mind, anticipated what my guests would need and had an incredible personality! I received so many compliments from 65 guests about how phenomenal she was. The food was amazing, the service was amazing and her personality was terrific! I had some ideas in mind, and she was able to use her expertise to customize a menu that was absolutely perfect; it couldn't have been better. She was at my house for 10 hrs, and she stayed the entire time and it didn't impact the price at all. Even on the initial contact Jen was outstanding in understanding our catering needs. Her menu is expansive and not limited to what is posted on her website. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

We had a house party that was for about 35 guests and we hired Daniel for the catering. It was the best decision we made! The food was amazing, from the hot appetizers to the main courses (chicken, beef) to the variety of desserts- it was all delicious. I couldn't believe how many guests commented about the food and the presentation. And the presentation was certainly unique- he served the entrees in giant martini glasses so that we could stand and mill about while holding food. Fantastic idea. Daniel first came over to our house to check out the layout and kitchen and we went over the menu and how we were going to set everything up. This helped to make sure that everything on the day of the party went smoothly. He had a server (his daughter) and she was such a huge help and worked very hard. Together, they took care of everything related to the food - everything! All the food was fresh and cooked right in the kitchen so we weren't eating reheated food. They not only cooked here and served, but they took care of the clean up and packaged and put away all the extra food for us. They took all the stress away from planning a party and we were left to enjoy ourselves. We had so many people we hadn't seen for years that it was wonderful to just relax and enjoy the conversation and food with them. I can't recommend Daniel highly enough. We would definitely hire him again!

I can't speak highly enough of my experience with Manda & Me Catering. After Julie's prompt response to my Thumbtack inquiry we spoke over the phone about my ideas and concerns re: menu for the surprise birthday party I was planning. She was warm and professional, offering suggestions re: serving options as this was my 1st time hosting an event of this magnitude. Julie translated my jumbled ideas into several varied & balanced menu options from which to choose. Leading up to the day of the event she stayed in communication, making sure to check in about little details like color scheme for the party so the paper goods she brought didn't clash. On the day of the event Julie was on-time and so efficient with set up, creating a gorgeous and tempting display. Of course, not only did the food look amazing but it tasted delicious! Our guests raved about the menu and the empty chafing dishes really spoke volumes! I'm so grateful to Julie for her collaboration for this party and I highly recommend her for your upcoming event!

I can't say enough of what Malone catering delivered. He handled my wedding in a way that provided zero worry for myself and my bride to be. He worked within our budget but didn't sacrifice quality. He was available for questions, however trivial they may have been, and always responded promptly. And most importantly, the quality of the food, was superb. He and his staff executed the night perfectly. From the food quality, to the staff he put in place, Malone catering delivered on every level. It was 5 star service and food on a working man's budget. We were more than happy, we were thankful that we went with Martin and Malone catering.

We selected Renee & her company Blonde on the Run Catering for our in-home Italian Wine tasting/pairing party and we were so happy we did. Renee and Tamara were friendly, professional and very accommodating in all aspects. The menu Renee came up with to match the 7 wines from Italy rocked. The food pairing was truly a match made in heaven. We look forward to hiring Renee for our next wine tasting party!

Working with Natural Foods was an absolute pleasure. From the initial contact through to the end, it was so easy. I was looking for a caterer for my housewarming party of 60. I really appreciated the focus on sustainable & seasonal. I was able to give Mr. Sawicki the framework of what I was looking for and he created such a unique & varied menu, I really felt like he listened and delivered on the party I was trying to create. My friends raved about the stuffed figs and amazing entrees! (the fish was amazing!) It was so easy to enjoy my party and so stress free. Professional, unique and you could see all the special touches. Natural Foods will be catering more of my parties, now I just need to have more reasons for parties!

Kendra catered a 50th birthday dinner for 80 people. Her food was outstanding, beautifully presented, and absolutely fresh and delicious. Her attention to detail was noticed by all my guests who immediately took her card! The beautifully presentation means as much to Kendra as how delicious her food is. I highly recommend Kendra and her staff for all your catering needs!

Cory and his company Fenway Sausage Works catered our wedding. My wife grew up in Rhode Island, and like any other New Englander she is a Red Sox fan to the core. Our wedding was baseball themed and Fenway Sausage works fit the occasion to a T. The menu choices were simple, easy to follow and easy to choose and move forward with while planning our wedding. Cory made a pre site visit to make sure he was best able to accomadate our wedding ideas. Like any business you have the contracts to deal with, but FSW was simple and easy, and then Cory seemed to go way above and beyond what he agreed to do and made the food at our wedding memorable and priceless. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced, I personally recommend the walking taco at any event. My mouth still waters from it. Cory we thank you and your wife for being part of our day, we consistantly here about the food from our wedding when we visit family in the area. If we ever have another catered event in the area, we will be sure to schedule it with your availability.

I hired Good Food Catering for a shower in my home for approximately 25 people. I was offered a variety of appetizers and dinner items to choose from. The food was timely delivered, set up, served and cleared without interrupting the shower whatsoever. Most of all, the food was delicious! My guests really enjoyed the variety and there was plenty of food for seconds which many took advantage of. I was able to enjoy the shower and not worry about the food, serving or clean up!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
