Upon arriving at my mother's house on a Saturday I was alarmed to see the spigot on the outside front was "spewing" water. My mom has been widowed & living alone in her home for more than 15 years. She's never been satisfied with the different odd repairs and exterior painting jobs she's hired thru word of mouth & was none too excited to consider finding a plumber. Sunday mornin I checked the spigot and the amount of water flowing was alarming so I typed "plumbers in Charleston, SC" into my browser bar and of course found many names, some with reviews thru yellow pages, Google etc. Then there was 3 responses thru I read each and every review to my mom with virtually no response from her. There was a tremendous amount of water being wasted thru that spigot. Monday mornin I took the biggest cooking pot in her house, a ginormous crab pot holds at least 4 gallons. I placed it under the spigot at 8:00am & @9:00am took pix and videos of the overflowing pot. It was unusually cold in Charleston that day. After showing her the pix I voiced that this is an emergency & gave her my opinion of exactly who I thought she should hire, which was Robert Jenkins, one of the responders. I liked that he had (18) 5 star reviews & felt his response showed great understanding and the quote, though not the least expensive, was most realistic. I emailed Robert at 11:00am & he called me within 10 minutes. After working in Mt Pleasant all day, Robert rushed over arriving about 4:00pm. He located and turned the water off at the main then carefully removed the very old existing spigot. "I'll be back in 10-20 minutes" he told me. Literally 10 minutes later he was back with a new spigot. Mom's neighbor had wondered over and I was impressed how young Robert was able to do his work while pleasantly conversing with the 75 year man. I consider the job done expertly, by a very polite, respectful young man. I felt the price was fair.

I have huge front and back decks with ramps attached to both that needed to be stained/sealed. After a couple of false starts due to circumstances beyond their control, Mike and Kelvin did an awesome job and everything looks fantastic. Kelvin worked tirelessly painting pickets (there are a lot of them!) and making sure the job was done right! Both men are very pleasant and have a great work ethic. I will most certainly be calling them again for future jobs! Thanks, Mike and Kelvin, y'all rock!

All I can say is WOW! What an excellent job Jerry did installing my ceiling fans (one which was 15 feet high on a slant!), painting 2 accent walls, fixing my weather stripping, tightening my door handles, hanging up towel racks, replacing a light switch, hanging up my wall decoration, putting my platform bed together and lowering a rack in my closet. He also made sure he cleaned up garbage and put items that were moved back in place. He was kind and courteous and everything I wanted a handy man to be!

Scot did a great job stripping the popcorn off our vaulted ceiling, fixing and painting the drywall and staining the beams. He also hung and finished new drywall and blended it beautifully with a really uneven ceiling. He was great to work with!

Alex is truly a professional who cares about every aspect of his business no matter what the task. He is polite, thoughtful and willing to work with you any way that he can. He did a FABULOUS job painting my daughter's room and did not leave the job until it met his satisfaction - not mine - HIS. This speaks volumes about the meticulous, dedicated worker he is. I am grateful to have found him on Thumbtack. P.S. Thanks to John - one of his workers - did a great job.

I hired Anthony to add chair rail and picture box molding to around 1500 square feet of my father's condo in downtown Charleston. During the course of the project, I added painting the entire unit to the scope of work. I had a very clear view of what I wanted and had even sketched out the number of boxes that I thought would be required for each wall. Anthony responded to my Thumbtack post immediately and was very responsive from the beginning. Because I live in Charlotte, the vast majority of this project was completed in my physical absence. Anthony could not have been better to work with. The one time we met in person before the start of the project, he met with me to discuss what I wanted and returned later that day with samples and to tape off the longest wall to show me what he had in mind based on my estimates and diagrams. I left Charleston confident that my father’s project was in the right hands. Working with Anthony was a real pleasure. He is a true professional and took immediate ownership of the project. It was clear that he expected to deliver a finished project that we would both appreciate. Anthony came up with thoughtful, well considered solutions to a number of problems – difficult to move outlets, a change in ceiling height. His attention to detail was truly impressive. His team wrapped switch plates in molding and modified measurements to accommodate details in the walls. Anthony raised issues where he saw them and was confident in his recommendations. He sent photos and initiated discussions when he had concerns about the direction of the project, but was gracious in those instances when I wanted to move forward in a manner not completely in line with his thoughts. I appreciated his interest in the project and his willingness to share his experience with me. The result was definitely better than my initial plan because of his input. He turned my idea for adding some detail to expansive blank condo walls into a truly custom trim treatment that looks like it should have always been there. I could not stop smiling when I finally returned to see the finished product. Anthony’s team was also excellent based on my father’s reporting and the work I saw myself. They used the designated work areas and took enormous care with my father and step mother’s personal items and hardwood floors (a particular concern for my step mother). I am looking forward to working with Anthony and his team in the future both on built-ins for this project and other projects. I cannot recommend Anthony and his team highly enough!

THIS GUY GETS THE JOB DONE!!! Not only was John cordial, honest and hardworking, but he was clean! At the end of each day, my home looked as it did before he came in to work on the bathroom renovation. John tiled the floor, drywalled, painted and did numerous other jobs pertaining to the renovation. My husband and I were very pleased and for the first time ever didn't get in a fight because of construction work in our home!

My husband did not want to paint our shed, so I call CGs Freshcoat Painting to make an appointment at his convenience and he fit me in within two weeks. My shed looks wonderful now, before my up coming summer cookout. Here are some before and after pictures and I am sorry, if they are upside down.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
