Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a safe consultation or appointment with an HVAC technician during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by comparing technicians in your area in an online search. Message or call technicians to ask whether they can perform a consultation over the phone or even over a video call. This way, they can assess the problem without increasing the risk of virus transmission by visiting your house.

If it turns out the service is essential, you’ll need to follow CDC guidelines as well as local government guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety.

How can I find out if an HVAC technician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Currently, governments on both the federal and local levels are updating guidelines on what qualifies as an essential service. To see whether an HVAC technician is considered an essential service during the COVID-19 pandemic, check your city or state’s government website.

For federal guidelines, check CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which identifies 16 critical infrastructure sectors during the crisis. But note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an HVAC technician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a technician for an HVAC repair or installation project, practice current social distancing guidelines. This may require remaining outside while the technician works or ensuring the technician can work in a sectioned-off area or outbuilding.

Comply with social distancing guidelines while the technician is performing work. Do not make physical contact with technicians, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, sanitize all involved spaces and surface and pay using a digital platform instead of cash or a check.

Can I use digital payments to pay for central air conditioning services?

The use of digital payment platforms -- like Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle, Venmo and Square Cash -- is common among air conditioning technicians. Currently, the COVID-19 pandemic is improving the adoption of these platforms as a means of helping social distancing.

As you compare local air conditioning technicians online, contact them to see if they’ll accept digital payments. Also, discuss strategies for completing the job while complying with safety guidelines for reducing the risk of exposure.

Can I install central air myself?

While you may be able to do some preparation work for central air installation, you should hire a licensed contractor to complete the project and handle the air conditioning refrigerants.

Also, unless you have the proper credentials, you risk making common mistakes when installing central air. This may include installing the wrong-size furnace, improperly installing ductwork and exhaust systems, and incorrectly managing drainage.

To ensure your central air is installed correctly, contact the best HVAC pros near you and start getting free estimates today.

Is it worth it to install central air?

Depending on where you live, it might be worth it to install central air. Central air makes your house comfortable on hot summer days. And although it’s hard to predict if adding central air will increase your home’s value, prospective homebuyers will certainly notice if it’s missing.

Another advantage of central air is that it can help dehumidify your home. Not only will it make your home more comfortable and enjoyable, but it can also  help prevent mold from growing or spreading.

Contact the best HVAC contractors near you to learn more about the central air installation process and to start receiving free estimates.

Does central air add value to a home?

A central air unit or HVAC system may add value to your home. Or, if you’re in the process of selling your home, it may help you close a sale.

The Remodeling Impact report found that 20% of realtors have suggested that home sellers replace their HVAC before attempting to sell their homes, and 7% said this project did help close a sale.

Talk with an expert to figure out if adding an HVAC system is a good idea for your home. And contact the best HVAC pros near you to get free estimates so you’ll know how much this project will cost you.

Does an HVAC technician need to enter my home?

Because most HVAC systems are located in the home, it’s likely that an HVAC technician would need to enter yours when working on the projects. However, there might be exceptions. Some HVAC systems are located in garages or in areas of the house that are sectioned off. During the consultation, ask your technician if they'll need to enter your home.

When you contact local technicians, ask if they’ll perform a video call in place of a traditional consultation. Be sure to send all materials like photos and documents digitally, and comply with all relevant guidelines.

Do HVAC technicians offer remote or virtual services?

Because HVAC technicians need to be physically present to do their work, they have not conventionally offered remote or virtual services. However, with the importance of social distancing due to COVID-19, the need for remote capabilities is greater than ever. If you come across a profile that states the HVAC technician or AC professional is offering remote services, message the pro to find out what those services include.

Consult with your technician to see if the technician will be able to perform a video call consultation. You can find local technicians near you by searching online.

How many years does HVAC last?

The number of years an HVAC system lasts depend on the type and brand of components that make up your system. The lifespan of an air conditioner averages between 15 and 20 years. The life expectancy of a tankless water heater is approximately 20 years, while a storage water heater is closer to 10-15 years. Ducts may need replacing within 10-15 years. Your equipment will have a longer life if you have regular tuneups and maintenance to keep everything in good working order. If you’re having repair problems and your HVAC system is over 10 years old, it’s a good time to consider the costs and benefits of repairing vs. replacing. Energystar.gov provides the following tips to help you decide whether to repair or replace:

  • Your HVAC system needs frequent repairs and your energy bills are increasing.
  • Your cooling or heating equipment is less efficient.
  • Rooms in your home are too hot or too cold.
  • Your heat pump or air conditioner is more than 10 years old.
    • Replacing your system with an Energy Star-certified unit could save up to 20 percent on your heating and cooling bills.
  • Your furnace or boiler is more than 15 years old.
    • You may choose to replace your system with an Energy Star-certified furnace (which is 15 percent more efficient than a conventional furnace) or an Energy Star-certified boiler (which is 5 percent more efficient).
  • Your home has humidity problems.
  • Your home has excessive dust.
    • Leaky ducts can pull particles and air from attics, crawl spaces and basements and distribute them throughout your house. Sealing your ducts may be a solution.
  • Your heating or cooling system is noisy.
    • You could have an undersized duct system or a problem with the indoor coil of your cooling equipment.
  • Your score on the Home Energy Yardstick is below five.
    • That means your home energy use is above average and you're probably paying too much for your utilities.

Ron and his crew did a great job. Replaced my HVAC system for, I believe, a reasonable price. They were very careful not to cause any damage to my property and removed every bit of trash and debris after they were done.

I cannot say enough about Fred's knowledge of older HVAC systems and ability to determine the underlying cause of what was going on with my unit. Other companies would have told me to purchase a brand new unit. Not Fred! I am so pleased 😊🙌😊😊

Had my HVAC system checked and tuned up by Fredrick: He was extremely professional, honest and explained what he was doing and why. And the price was extremely reasonable, actually one of the lowest quotes I received, but he went above and beyond explaining things to me. Overall, extremely satisfied! He will be my first choice from now on.

Besides being punctual I was impressed with the skill and knowledge to fix a 23yr old unit that others refused to repair in order to install a new HVAC. Topping it all off Joe’s charge was reasonable. My friends and family will be getting his number for any and all future AC problems. Large or small I’m confident he can handle it.

J&C was great. I was looking for an hvac pro around 3am and he quickly responded me back within a few minutes after. He also easily diagnosed the problem over the phone and found it was not a/c related. I would definitely recommend him for other A/C related jobs due to his honesty, great and prompt service.

We really appreciated the extremely timely and informative service call today. After getting the repair, we knew that we got an honest deal. Without being asked Alfredo showed/explained everything he was doing. We received what our unit needed to be up and running again and nothing more. We will definitely call De Anda for our future HVAC needs.

I'd like to tell everyone about my very positive experience working with Jeff at J&C AC. Jeff by far is the most honest and reasonable contractor I have ever worked with. If you've hired people to do work on your home before then I'm sure you're aware of how many dishonest and unreasonable contractors there are in the world. Jeff is absolutely not one of them and I only wish that everyone exhibited his integrity. I've have since used him twice to replace the HVAC systems on a duplex I own in San Antonio and would use him again if the need arises. My property management company via one of their contractors initially quoted me $7000 to replace the HVAC system on one of my units. I thought that too high and so I reached out to a number of HVAC specialist on Thumbtack. Jeff quoted me a reasonable price of $3,200 for the same work to replace the whole system. I received 6 other quotes none of which even came close to Jeff's pricing. Out of six other quotes NONE could match Jeff. Not only was his pricing reasonable but he also included a two year warranty on his labor, everyone else only gave one. The second time I used Jeff was equally as positive. Initially the managements contractor quoted me a similar $7000 to replace the HVAC unit in the other side of the duplex. They said the whole unit needed to be replaced. I knew there was only one person I could trust and that was Jeff. When he arrived to replace the system he told me that the furnace was only 3 years old and didn't need replacing, the other guys didn't seem to find that important to mention! I would like to emphasize that honesty that Jeff exhibited that day. Contractors these days can't wait to sell you something you don't actually need and had Jeff not taken a look I might have paid far more than I should have. I wasn't in San Antonio to see the unit for myself, Jeff could have easily told me that the whole unit needed to be replaced and thus, made more money but he didn't. He told me exactly what needed to be done and nothing more unlike everyone else would have. That is a type of honestly that you just can't find anymore. If you are looking for a reasonable, reliable and honest HVAC specialist then look no further than Jeff. His actions speak for his integrity and I would recommend him a hundred times over. Thanks Jeff!

Alfredo was quite knowledgeable and did a thorough test and clean of my old HVAC system. Other companies have only sprayed up under the vents and said they cleaned the coils but Alfredo removed them for a thorough cleaning. His testers showed that a capacitor on my outside unit and one on inside unit needed replacement so replaced those. I’m pleased and will recommend to new owner that she continue with him for routine maintenance.

First experience working with Ozone cool air and very pleased with the results. After installing our own mini-split unit we were in need of our AC lines to be evacuated. Ozone replied promptly and offered to come out the same day. He went above and beyond what we asked him to do by inspecting the work we had done and he fixed some minor slip ups of ours. I would definitely recommend him again for any of your HVAC needs.
