How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Great in communication/ Bryce did work he was hired for- said he was a licensed electrician - asked for proof, that’s he was license and insured, made excuses, never provided. Did great work but nothing to ensure the work done is valid, won’t cause an issue later or protected, that I am safe.

Amazing service from initial contact to design to installation. We had recessed lighting installed, ceiling fan removed and a chandelier hung. Installers were very friendly, professional, knowledgeable and went above and beyond. Enoch will be a permanent addition to my contacts and I will recommend them to anyone who asks for an electrician.

Chris communicated well and completed the job needed. I have many projects that I will now be only calling Chris for. I highly recommend Chris.

We found out today that this electrician cut the main power line that was feeding half the second floor to create a single plug in the attic. This is very professional! He knows (as a master licensed electrician as he tells people)that he could have split that power line to create the plug and not mess up our infrastructure. I am glad that I didn’t hire him to do the whole list of open items and tested him with minor quick fixed. Francisco, thank you for giving us a reason not to hire you ever again! In response to this contractor’s comment: How delusional is that. If you, in your mind have suggested the AC runs of its own circuit, you go ahead and cut the rest of the floor of power to create a dedicated circuit!? Not only that, when we told you that the rest of the floor doesn’t have power you sarcastically said we didn’t have infrastructure and that we were interviewing 12 other electricians according to your “claimed” gossip with the painter. If you thought we needed a separate circuit, you would not have taken the job, or you would have informed us of your plans to cut off the rest of the floor of electricity or you would have done what we have agreed to, which you have not done. Very bad job, topped off with your refusal to come and fix your mess and bashing us with your claimed gossiping with our contractors. Very unprofessional. I wouldn’t hire him as he failed minor installation test and doesn’t respect people’s privacy and safety.

I had Jessie and his team come out and install some hanging lights. I have 20’ ceilings and they were able to get the job done. Very reasonable and affordable pricing. I have hired several different electricians to perform work and his team was by far the best and most importantly honest. I would definitely recommend him to family and friends.

They showed up for an estimate. a Quoted more on the retail side then I would have preferred considering the electrician that was a part of building my home quoted me a little bit less per ballast , but for the fact that they responded right away, their knowledge and their ability to be there on Monday, and get the job done very well was just Priceless. I highly recommend them to anyone needing any electrical work.

We recently experienced an electrical shortage that claimed two guest bedrooms, leaving them both without power. This couldn’t have occurred at a more inconvenient time, seeing as how we were hosting for the holidays. Considering the circumstances, I was extremely worried about one’s availability and of course the cost associated with restoration. After learning that the issue at hand was not covered under my policy with AHS, I resorted to Thumbtack and was in search for qualified electrician who was reasonably priced. Jared provided excellent service from the initial point of engagement through to resolution, and was very professional throughout. We conducted a brief consultation by phone where I took the opportunity to explain my prior troubleshooting initiative and also the series of events that led up to the outage for awareness and understanding. Jared offered competitive pricing and seeing as how his compensation was measured by an hourly rate, for cost efficiency purposes, I wanted to ensure that my efforts weren’t going to be duplicated unless it was absolutely necessary. Jared addressed all of my initial concerns with a sense of integrity and furthermore expressed consideration towards my sense of urgency. Jared exceeded my expectation when he alerted me that he was able to arrive sooner than our scheduled appointed time and was able to identify the root cause and remedy the issue within the hour quoted. I have saved his information as a resource for the future and would without a doubt refer him to anyone seeking the services of an electrician! Thank you Jared!

Wow, Larry is awesome! Had him replace a old 100 amp panel with a 200 amp panel (job date: 5/29/2019) in my house. Work was done the same day even tho D/FW was under severe thunderstorms and tornado watches. I highly recommend him if you need electrical services. I already having him come back next week to work on a sub-panel for my pool and install a new ceiling fan for my front room. I see one negative review on here due to conflicting schedule with the individual. Unfortunately, Larry is getting a lot of business which could of caused for the delay. Be patient with him. I already told him, he pretty much going to be my Electrician for any future projects that need to be done.
