Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

Did a great job on the floors. Had some hiccups towards the end on scheduling and finishing up baseboards as well as cleanup but overall great work on the floors themselves. They will ask for payment almost immediately upon completion- so be ready. Would definitely use again though.

Serigo did my laminate flooring and he did a beautiful job. He was on time and did the job very fast. He cleaned up all left over material and cleaned my new floor beautiful. He put down my new baseboards and put the right kind of padding I wanted under my laminate. I would highly recommend Serigo for any floor job. Can't wait to do my bedrooms and I will certainly let him do it for me. He was very kind and answered all my questions. This installer is great.

Fidel was amazing during the entire process. He helped me find the right product. He was very responsive & helpful. He came in the morning and finished it by late afternoon. He was very detailed and didn’t rush through the process like the other flooring guys did when I had my old tiles done. I can already see the difference in the quality. I have had a mixed bag of experiences with MP Carpet and Floors. I will cover the positive areas first: 1. The installation team under Francisco did a really good job with the laminate installation. They were quick and efficient and also moved my furniture. It looks good. 2. The tiler (kitchen) did a great job sealing the kitchen with plastic for dust before removing old tile. He did a great job installing new tile - used a level throughout and got it all level and straight. Also tiled a fireplace surround for me, which looks great. Now for some of the service areas that should be improved: 1. Robert starts asking for payment before the job is completed and final inspection is done. Same thing with initial deposit. All about money. This can be somewhat annoying. 2. I am still waiting for an invoice reflecting the final amount for the job as completed. I provided a final check to Robert when he thought the job was completed, based on calculations we texted and I did. I need a final invoice for tax purposes. There were some added items with extra laminate needed, additional quarter rounds, grout I bought due to color, etc. Some boxes of kitchen tile were not used and taken back to their store (installed less sqf. than estimated). I have asked for a final invoice several times. Still do not have it. 3. Once again, Robert was quite annoying by sending a stack of emails over Thanksgiving asking for photos I took from the completed floor without furniture. I said I would send it to him, but he wanted it right then while I was still moving back into my house after everything touching the floor was packed and moved for the installation. One would think I can get a final invoice too, but that is not his priority. 4. The new quarter rounds installed on the tiled kitchen floor was really done poorly. I will have to get this fixed - it does not meet professional standards. Final Comments: The laminate installation was done well. There are some administrative and customer service issues that definitely needs attention. Examples are mentioned above. There is also room for improvement with the finishing touches (replacing base board & quarter round items and doors that were removed). Attention to detail and the little things are important.
