Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Maury has trained our rescue dog wonderfully!

With many different ways or techniques to train your dog nowadays, I am beyond grateful I found Pamela to train my English Bulldog. Pamela's approach to dog training is one of the only few in Dallas that does not use treats to train. With this approach, your dog not only listens to you better, but longterm wise they won't keep looking at your hand or for the nearest bag of dog treats nearby to determine if they should listen to you. This has taught my dog to fully understand my commands better and build a better relationship and bonding experience between her and me based on praise training. My dog now listens to me without having to have any treats on hand or nearby.

Pamela is a truly wonderful dog trainer. We just completed our fourth session last week and, in just two weeks, my dog is already calmer and more well-behaved. She really gives you the confidence you need to make the training successful. Perhaps the best gift, though, is that in training with Pamela, I feel much closer to my dog. Both him and me couldn't recommend her more!

They communicated great with us. They taught us well and gave us the tools to train our pomsky puppy and 2 other adult dogs. We would've not been able to train him especially since our puppy is not the easiest to handle. They did great helping to train our 3 dogs. I can see the difference before and now.

Our pup is only 6 was old and didn’t have interaction with her mother & limited exposure to litter mates for only the first 3 weeks: Lauren brought her 9mo old pup to interact as well as talk about the training and philosophy, etc. It was really great to see our Storm learning to be a dog, and good behavior as a dog right away. My husband and I were sold and went for the full training package :)

If your dog has aggressive behavior, stay away from this trainer. My dog had never bit anyone but after the trainings with Pamela he bit my girlfriend, and of course Pamela did not even say sorry. She does not believe in treats; other trainers will tell you how inhumane this method is. I had a terrible experience with Pamela but fortunately Thumbtack showed very good support and we didn't feel we have been left alone. This is the first time in my whole life that I'm writing a 1-star review of ANYTHING.

Butch is amazing. My dog had severe fear angression and has a bite history. After being with Butch for several weeks, my dog is no longer aggressive and loves meeting new people. Not only did Butch work with my dog pertaining to his aggression, he also taught him skills and I'll continue to see Butch in the future for further training. If you dog needs help with aggression or obedience, K9 Kountry is the place to go! Would definitely recommend to friends and family.

We hired Lauren over a year ago. From the information online we thought we were getting a great deal for the price. We didn't like that Lauren said one of our dogs was smarter than the other because of her breed. Both our dogs are extremely intelligent and it seemed as though she didn't think that. also didn't appreciate that she was over 30 minutes late. We also had to pay extra for a prong collar that did nothing for our dogs training wise at all. Most of the time we spent was listening to Lauren tell about herself and her experiences, we felt it should have been more focused on actual training our dogs. We did not hire her after the initial session.

i didn't learn anything i didn't already know. It seemed like the bulk of her training methodology consisted of simply "good girl" and "bad dog" type of reinforcement. Of course i am oversimplifying. And the trainer was very nice as a person. At the end, I just didn't find anything worth paying a professional for.

The training was not only a terrific education for our pup, but for our family as well. We loved how our kids were invited into the process and were amazed at how quickly our dog was able to learn new behaviors!

Pamela is absolutely wonderful. I can not recommend her more highly. She really pays attention to our dog's (Australian Shepard/Great Pyrenees) strengths and weaknesses and tailors training to him individually. She has taught us so much as owners/handlers and we feel like we are now able to effectively communicate with our dog. We love that all training is done with positive reinforcement instead of treats... it creates a much stronger relationship with our sweet pup. His bad habits (mouthing, counter surfing, chewing things that did not belong to him) were gone almost immediately after starting to train and now he is just soaking up more and more advanced training that makes walking, meals, and playtime so much more fun. We love Pamela!

Maury has been amazing. He has worked with me through a very stressful time and been very patient with both me and my dog. His facilities are excellent. I couldn't have asked for a better trainer. Even though my dog had to isolated because of aggression issues, he actually seems like he misses his boarding and Maury! His pricing is extremely fair as well. Aside from the training, I now know I can leave town and board my pets with someone that not only cares about my pets, but is giving them much needed training. I have already recommended him to my family and a few friends. I also feel very comfortable having private sessions with my dog in my home. He has a great energy that both animals and people can sense immediately.

Amy was knowledgeable and clearly explained each exercise and gave effective instructions. With her guidance and instructions, I feel confident that I will be able to successfully train and guide my dog to become the amazing pet I know he can be.

Maury came to our home for an initial consultation. We were impressed enough to give him the payment of $350 up front, and then we scheduled on the calendar for the 5 weeks of sessions forthcoming. On the day that Maury came for the first training, he called ahead to confirm the address, although he had already been here. He must have been having a bad morning, as he was very rough, aggressive and heavy handed with training my 10lb. Toy Schnauzer puppy. To show her who was boss he strangled her on the training caller and yanked her backward thru the dog door. My dog was in shock, and terrified of Maury; and that ended the brief session we had. I was astonished by the behavior after reading all the great reviews here on Thumbtack. Maury apologized and courteously offered me a refund. I have nothing more to add other than I would never trust him alone with my dog.

I've honestly never written a review but I am very upset and disappointed with my experience with these trainers. First off, I have a highly reactive 11 month old German Shepherd, behavior of which I disclosed in thumbtack's initial inquiries. I knew it would be difficult to find a trainer willing to handle him and wanted anyone considering it to know the full details. When they contacted me asking about his biting behavior, I specified that although it does seem like he has bitten a person before no one has ever been injured. Since they decided to continue with setting up an appointment I assumed this would not be an issue. During the evaluation, they honestly didn't tell us anything about our dog we didn't already know. Basically that he's fearful, went through a lot during his time as a stray, etc. However, when they met Pi it seemed like he didn't react as badly to them as to other strangers so I was hopeful. THEY RECOMMENDED that he take their three-week course, and we REPEATEDLY made sure that they really thought it would be enough for the goals we set. At this point, they tried to charge us $100 for the evaluation, only $15 less than a full training session. This was shocking as an evaluation fee was never specified in our conversation, so I assumed it would be free as many trainers do free evaluations. When I asked if they were sure if they told me about this, Teresa completely dismissed my concern. I immediately checked the chat and verified that she indeed did not mention any sort of fee. When informed of this, she told her trainer that the fee was dismissed (rather than telling me) and never apologized. I was already very annoyed by this but since their rates seemed reasonable and they boasted being experienced we decided to hire them anyways. However, 2 days later they sent us an email with another evaluation, many parts of which seem very contradictory to the impression we got before. Teresa said my dog "does not have a relationship" with us and that even though we mentioned that we wanted the three week program they "feel that it will take longer than three weeks to get you where you want to be", making it sound as if they're not the ones who recommended us this course in the first place and like we wanted to rush the process. She also said that "He may act like a puppy but he's not a puppy" even though he's literally only estimated to be about a year old. Despite advertising their trainer as a "dog whisperer", having worked with 100 german shepherds as a police K9 trainer, and having "recent success with reactive/aggressive dogs" they were not willing to train him under the program THEY had recommended originally. I understand if an hour is not enough time to do a proper evaluation but in that case just say so, DO NOT act like it is and you can handle difficult dogs then completely change your mind later. This is very unfair to the clients. When we called for an explanation of this sudden change they basically told us that when he lunged and tried to bite a trainer (even though she's the "certified trainer" who stuck her hand out at a reactive german shepherd) that was the deal breaker. He did not even scratch her. Again, I had already disclosed this behavior so if she's really competent perhaps she should've known better than to provoke my dog like that. They said that he had no bonding with us whatsoever and did not follow commands the first time. He follows commands about 70% of all times, even during the evaluation when he was very stressed as there were two strangers in his territory. Of course 70% is not enough but if he did everything we told him to the first time why the hell would we need their help. I also highly suspect they don't want to handle him because we voiced that we didn't use a shock collar and drug our dog (he already has 2 training collars), implying that they are out of date with non-cruel training methods (despite boating that they were modern "balance trainers"). Overall, I can't say how they handle the typical friendly dog but they are practically incompetent with reactive/aggressive dogs. I feel very mislead and honestly a little offended. They called our dog "selfish" many times and and despite praising him for sitting, laying down, and staying and my handling of him during the evaluation, later said that he was not bonded to us at all. He is very sweet to us and has already made significant progress in the past 2 weeks under another trainer's instruction. I don't care that they're not trained to handle aggressive dogs, not many trainers are, but I do care that they pretended like they could until they got home and decided it's better not to lie. It is obvious that they have very little patience, a lethal flaw for a dog trainer, and care more about the money than the dogs they're training.

From the moment I sent an inquiry to K9 Kountry through Thumbtack, I was instantly contacted by the owner, Butch. He was friendly, professional and very informative. He even sent me videos of the training they provided! He had availability for our dog the following week & they took great care of our girl, Chesney. I was even able to call in & check on her! The price was very affordable and they provided her with exceptional training. Upon completion of the obedience course, she was able to sit, front, and heel without any hesitation. We were even given her own personalized training video and did a short handler's course together. I can't thank Butch, Stan & Carie enough for taking such great care of our sweet girl & sending her back better than the way we left her! We recommend K9 Kountry to anyone in need of dog training.

Pamela was great to work with. Not only did she train our pup to be a good boy, she trained myself on how to be a better dog dad. I was shocked how much I learned from Pamela. Our pup is so well behaved now and it’s all because of Her. I’d recommend her to anyone. ESPECIALLY if you have a German shepherd. She’s amazing! You won’t regret it!
