Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I get my grout clean?

Dirt, mildew and grime can make your grout lines look downright tragic. If you have the ability, DIY tile and grout cleaning is definitely doable. Your main obstacles are time, project size, availability of the right materials and effort. Your first step in tile and grout cleaning is making sure the surface area is cleaned of basic dirt and buildup and wiped down. Be sure not to use a bleach-based cleaning agent, which could react dangerously with the vinegar used in later steps.

Depending on the delicacy of your tile and grout, it may be wise to start with water and friction before proceeding to a cleaning solution. In the shower you can spray the area while brushing gently, or use a spray bottle filled with warm water on countertops or floors. If water won’t do the trick, try a solution of equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and repeat the gentle brushing motion. This combination should begin to lift dirt and grime from the grout. For additional tile and grout cleaning power, baking soda applied directly to grout lines and sprayed with your water vinegar solution can help suds off sticky grime. If your DIY cleaning solutions aren’t doing the trick, store-bought sprays and pastes may have more cleansing power. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning and enjoy your sparkling clean grout.

Tile and grout cleaning supplies include:

  • Old standard or electric toothbrush
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spray bottle
  • White vinegar
  • Commercial grout cleaner

How much does it cost to clean tile and grout?

The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Pros may charge a flat fee or by the square foot. Rates can vary depending on the type of tile and grout you have (more delicate tiles may mean specialized products or careful handwashing), how dirty your tile and grout are, and what part of the country you are in (regional labor rates and costs to do business affect costs). For example, one floor cleaning company charges 75 cents per square foot for tile and grout cleaning for projects that permit cleaning by machine. Another company may charge $30-$50 per hour for hand-cleaning of tiles. Companies often charge a minimum fee for services to ensure their business expenses are met when they accept a job, no matter how small. In addition, a tile and flooring cleaning professional may charge added fees, such as $25 or more, to move heavy furniture or appliances.

How do professionals clean tile and grout?

If you need tile and grout cleaning and don’t have the time or mobility for scrubbing your entire house on your hands and knees, it’s time to turn to the pros. Tile and grout cleaning professionals have industrial-grade machines designed for the sole task of cleaning the porous materials of grout and tile.

Typically, a cleaning pro will come out to assess the job and provide you with a quote. Often they charge per square foot (for example, 75 cents per square foot), with higher prices or an hourly rate for areas that will need hand cleaning. The national average cost for tile and grout cleaning ranges from $190 to $250.

Once onsite, the pros thoroughly clean the area by wiping or sweeping down and then vacuuming up any dry dirt. Next a chemical tile cleaner is sprayed over the surface, causing dirt to loosen and adhere to the spray; the industry term for this is “suspension.” The pros then clean the floor with professional-strength machines, which often use a combination of steam, brushes and vacuum to loosen, agitate and lift entrenched dirt. Your floor is then rinsed, removing all the spray.

Usually a small room can be cleaned in under an hour. Applying a sealant afterward is recommend and will also affect cost.

Can you rent a tile and grout cleaner?

Yes, you may be able to find tile and grout cleaner rentals near you. You might be able to rent a cleaner for a few hours, a day, a week or a month. If renting a tile and grout cleaner — and buying the other supplies needed — is too expensive, consider hiring a pro to clean your tile and grout for you.

They were extremely professional. I had a very tough JOB. My floor tile was grouted incorrectly and very sloppy. To be honest my floor must be tiled again or grouted again from scratch. They actually got on their hands and knees with a machine and cleaned each of the tiles individually. In which has made a big difference. As well as referred me to a tile professional. Great JOB

Adequate job, showed up on time, no 'wow' factor on completion. I had a dingy tile shower that needed refreshing. Was looking for deep cleaning of tile and grout, remove mildewed caulk, seal tile and grout, and apply new caulk where needed. They quoted me much lower than other pros, but when they showed up quote went from $150 to $500. We settled on $200 and they adequately completed job. It's cleaner than before, mildew, is gone, silicone caulk applied in corners, but tile/grout wasn't sealed, so it still looks dingy- just less dingy.

Daniel did a excellent job cleaning my tile & grout. He came on time and performed the work in a timely manner for a fair price. I had applied Polyblend Grout Renew to the original grout a few years ago and when Daniel finished all the dirt and grime was removed with minimal disturbance to the grout renew product. Only a couple of minor spots that I will need to touch up but really not needed unless you are meticulous like me. The picture below is after the cleaning was done and before I touch up with the grout renew. Very satisfied customer.

Daniel did an amazing job on our tile floors and shower. A job that should have taken a couple of hours ended up taking almost five hours because he would not do a less-than-perfect job. He could have told us that the grout was as good as it would get using the cleaning machine. Instead, he spent hours on his hands and knees power washing every single grout line! He wouldn't quit until he was satisfied the job was done right. He was on-time, professional, and patient with all my questions. Undoubtedly, the best value for the money we've had in a long time. We cannot recommend Daniel highly enough.

If you need your tile and grout cleaned, you need to hire DB! I am so happy I chose them. Daniel was wonderful in going over with me what I wanted and the areas of special care that were needed. I will hire again and give the highest recommendations. Daniel arrived on time and finished as promised, the price was very reasonable, a great value. He also moved the furniture that I requested and then set everything back to how he found it.

Please just stop reading and hire him now.. He is truly the Tile and Grout Expert! I just got into a rental with absolutely filthy Tile (steam cleaning couldn't help). I didn't notice how bad on initial walkthrough. It looked like it hadn't been mopped in years and was horribly stained. The grout in room 2, wasn't even visible after scrub mopping. Room 1 was chemical bombed and hard bristle mopped and still looked filthy. I will go a step further and say I think it even trapped odor. I contacted him and he was able to get me in the same day. He completed a miracle! The floor NOW looks like the new pics I originally seen on the rental ad. Landlord used 2 different types of flooring that needed 2 different processes and he knew exactly what to do. I can't thank him enough! I'm beyond thankful!! I was sooo unhappy/embarrassed with the flooring, NOW I LOVE IT!! A+++
