Aaron is tutoring my granddaughter, 7th grade, in math and in a few short months she has improved her grade significantly. They have a good rapport and she is learning and improving with each session. She has ADHD and he works well with her issues and keeps her on task in a positive way. He also keeps tabs on her school lessons and teacher lesson plans so that his tutoring is relevant. I recommend Aaron completely.

I was a student of Melba's for three years at St. Edwards University in Austin, TX, and an actor under her direction in many productions there at Mary Moody Northen Theater. I count Melba as one of the few key mentors that profoundly influenced my direction and trajectory as an artist. Melba is an expert at identifying and fostering collaborative relationships. The creative family she brought me into at St. Edwards continues to thrive together more than ten years after. We're all still doing what we set out to do at St. Edwards, in one way or another, and I know we all draw from Melba's many lessons and inspirations regularly.

As a distance learner this year, my son struggled with his Algebra lessons and it was quickly becoming clear he wasn't going to make the grade. After researching tutors for several hours it was Joe to the rescue! Joe came right out to the house and sat next to my son as he did his lessons. He quickly identified my son's learning style and broke down the material in such a way that my son could more readily absorb it. My son is back to all A's and will be completing his Algebra course a full 2 months early! Thanks Joe!

My 3 friends and I found Diana’s teaching style to be fun and relaxed but very effective. We let her know in advance that we were more interested in developing our listening and conversational Spanish than having school-like classes following a textbook, and she was perfect for this. She brought in music from her native Ecuador, Spanish videos, and other fun material that meant that the lessons flew by. She encouraged us to speak in Spanish at all times, which really helped us to develop our vocabulary and expression as we asked questions in Spanish and attempted to explain ourselves. Overall, the classes were great fun, very interactive, and productive in terms of improving our spoken Spanish. We would all absolutely recommend her!

I can count the amount of teachers from my high school career who impacted me on one hand. Mrs. Wiatrek is one of them. There was no dreading her class or copying the homework from other classmates because I enjoyed it. I looked forward not necessarily to learning, but to what she was going to teach me. Today, many class sizes are so large that each student's individual education inevitably gets watered down, but I never felt that in Mrs. Wiatrek's class. I felt as important as every other classmate. I was never shy to raise my hand and ask questions because I knew that in that environment there were no stupid questions. Every question and every answer helped me grow. Mrs. Wiatrek never let us fall behind. When I was going through a difficult situation at home, my grades started dropping. Mrs. Wiatrek approached me and made me feel so accepted and understood. She wanted me to succeed. We made a plan together so I wouldn't fall behind in the class. When my grades went up, she was proud of me and I could feel that. Mrs. Wiatrek impacted me in so many ways. I found myself fast-walking to her class, eager for the next discussion. I found myself loving books I never would have ordinarily read. She made learning fun. She made reading interesting. She drove me to succeed by helpings me build goals and standards for myself and encouraging me to reach them. She expected a lot from us and did everything she could to inspire us and motivate us to meet those expectations. That classroom is my best memory from high school. It was a place where I found solace in books, where I felt capable, and where I learned valuable life lessons. What I learned in her class has helped me excel in my college career, and I know that without her class I would not have the knowledge and tools to succeed that I do today.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
