We needed lunch for 18 at our shop at Miller Motorsports Park, as we hosted Porsche racecar drivers over two weekends. Mike provided four days of wonderfully presented delicious food, arriving on time, with the dishes kept warm or cold as needed, each meal more delicious than the last. The kabobs with peanut sauce and lemon-grass-kissed marinated cucumbers were out of this world. We plan to use No Name Gourmet for all our catering needs and just wish we could take him with us to the "away races"!

Self Impressions Catering has been catering lunch every day for us during our training at the office. They are wonderful. I am always excited to see what they have made each day, and it's always the highlight of my day. They even made a "suggestions" box for us to suggest what lunch we want! They're very friendly and they make excellent food.

Jenna did an outstanding job. The food was great, she was on top of communication, and set proper expectations. We changed our minds a few times but it all worked out in the end. There were a couple of changes we needed to make on the fly, but Jenna was honest with what she needed and kept me updated. I would Highly recommend Jenna for catering and personal chef needs!

Vicki was a great pleasure to work with. She provided the perfect menu for the celebration of life picnic we had after my father's funeral. He always said he wanted a good party when he passed, and we were able to grant that wish with Vicki's help. She was quick to adapt when my family and I decided against using a full service caterer, and then again when the celebration ended up being smaller than originally anticipated. I also appreciated her expertise as she made suggestions for a color scheme and possible changes to the menu based on the season and cooler weather. Overall Vicki was personable and professional. And... the food was fantastic! I enthusiastically recommend Vicki to anyone who is in need of catering services.

For the past two summers, Chef Rob has done an outstanding job catering for our Minor League affiliate, the Ogden Raptors. As an organization, we have an intensive nutrition program for all of our players from the Major League club down, and Chef Rob has gone above and beyond our lofty expectations. He’s been flexible, creative with his menus, and incredibly responsive/receptive to all of our various requests from day-to-day. Most importantly, the food has tasted absolutely amazing. Our players consistently give him rave reviews and our Dodgers organization feels incredibly fortunate to have partnered with Chef Rob. We hope to work with him for many seasons to come.

Great catering service for a major fundraising event, with close to 300 guests. Chalia was great to work with. She remained calm at all times, and our guests loved the food that she and Juan made. She offered a very nice tasting opportunity in advance while we were choosing caterers, and we were sold! Would happily use The Brulee Catering again.

We hired Rex and Cathy to provide a dinner for our wedding, and they were absolutely fantastic! We aren't from Salt Lake originally, but wanted to get married here. Unfortunately, this meant we didn't have a whole lot of help from family when it came to planning. Rex and Cathy were really the first cog for the event we found, and everything started to come together after we booked them. They were a real delight to work with: exceptionally polite, flexible, fun, and punctual. Because of them, we started to believe that we could actually pull off planning a wedding. They even invited us over to their house to try the food, which was exceptional. Our wedding was outside, and on the big day, it dumped rain. Rex and his team showed up with a pop up tent though, and had plenty of manpower to get the job done. They fed 120 people with no problems, and even specially prepared vegetable lasagna for our vegetarian guests! All of our guests also enjoyed watching the preparation of the meal and the Dutch Oven cooking, it was extra entertainment! After the dinner, we received several compliments on the food, and many of our guests went back for seconds and thirds. For us it was much more intimate than having a caterer show up with pre-made food in chaffing dishes. If you’re looking to host an event, you can’t go wrong with Carroll’s Custom Cooking, these guys are the best! The food was absolutely delicious, but more importantly, they took a lot of stress off of our backs knowing that our guests would be happy.

We have used Harvest SLC catering to prepare our annual convention dinner for three years in a row now. They are efficient, clean, and the pricing is affordable. We have guests with specific dietary needs including gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian and Harvest has provided something for even the pickiest appetite or perhaps I should say the most specialized. Everyone always raves about the food. We will continue using Harvest SLC services every September.

Chef Bryer's service has been hands down the greatest I've ever experienced. He catered my husband and I's rehearsal dinner, wedding dinner and our reception hor dorves/dessert(September, 2015). I was so impressed with his professionalism, modern approach, and appreciated his artistic eye when it came to plating the food. He made everything stress free, simple, and everyone who attended LOVED the food! I recommend Chef Bryer to anyone and everyone planning a special event, holiday party, or family gathering. Thanks again Bryer for you exceptional service

Needless to say, we were very surprised at how fresh and tasty the food was. After we met the owners of the company, it was no surprise; these people are true professionals. We took a chance when we booked Lavanda, due to how relatively new they were on the website, but we saw that they had previously ran their own family restaurant, and the experience truly shows in their craft. We will definitely call them again for our next party.

Working with Rockwell Catering and Events was a breeze! The owner, Ethan Ingram, was so personable and easy to work with. He listened to all of our requirements and when I got really specific/nit picky about little things that wouldn't have mattered to anyone but me, Ethan listened and made the changes I asked for quickly! The food he makes is amazing and the tasting that we had with him before booking anything was so professional. I highly, HIGHLY recommend booking any catering that you need done through Rockwell Catering and Events. Big or small events - you won't be disappointed. Two thumbs up!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
