Jorge and his crew did a really nice job for a very reasonable price. They installed insulation, hung and taped drywall (with a smooth finish), painted the exterior and painted the interior of a garage-turned-studio / workshop. I am a bit of a 'perfectionist on a budget'... so probably the most annoying kind of customer to work with. And while I did have to make a few requests throughout the job that I thought were sort of obvious (like covering the garage doors in plastic because the black exterior paint was misting on them), they were always very accommodating and wanted me to be satisfied with the project. So just be very specific at the beginning about your expectations and tell Jorge if anything comes up that you're not satisfied with, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result. One example... the floor was left with white drywall dust and mud splatters on the concrete (even though I had mentioned that it was our final flooring and not going to be covered up), and when I texted Jorge about it, his wife called me right away and they came over that evening to scrub it clean. They are really nice people to work with, and it's apparent that they care about their customers. I would work with them again on future projects.

Refinish hardwood floor in small room. Pro Flooring responded to request for quote very quickly, came by within a day or two to provide reasonable quote, had excellent communication regarding job, was on time, professional and did an excellent job. It is hard to get anyone to travel to do a small job, but Pro Flooring treated my job as importantly as if it were a 3000 sq ft job. I would hire them again in a minute and hope I have the opportunity to recommend them to others.

Overall, very good. Communication could have been somewhat more clear, such as hoses and faucets not being reconnected despite being removed by them, or options for trim on tile before it was installed. Looks great and they stayed on schedule.

George did an amazing job with our floors! Our floors are absolutely gorgeous. He was prompt and finished the floors ahead of the proposed schedule. He kept up updated every step of the way and would send pictures. George noticed some dings in our walls and repaired them for free. His prices were very reasonable compared to the other quotes we received. I would not hesitate to recommend George and European Custom Flooring to all of my family and friends.

Hardwood Floor Therapy re-finished 650 SF of oak flooring in my 1956 house. They were on time and professional, and the floors look absolutely amazing. They look like brand new floors. I had a few missing floor trim sections where old heaters had been removed, and Hardwood Floor Therapy replaced them at no charge just to help me out. I will definitely work with them again.

What an exceptional group of craftsmen. My home is over 100 years old and the fir floors had been badly refinished when I bought the home. These guys fixed a terrible prior sanding job, patched flooring from previous floor ducts and replaced worn out or broken boards. They also fixed most of the squeaks by glueing and screwing nails into the sub floor. Outstanding floor guys. Highly recommended.

Working with TJ was great. He responded to my request for help immediately and was out at my place the next day! His quality of work was very good and I would absolutely use him again.

Elegant Hardwood installed new bamboo flooring in my condo. Owner, Bob Dang responded to my request immediately, offered a quote over the phone (it was a very straightforward job), offered to come and do the job within two days, and all for a great price ( a fraction of some of the other bids I received). They arrived 40 minutes earlier than expected and the team did a great job (Bob did not stay on site but came by after the work was done to inspect and do some finishing work). They were courteous, no-nonsense and cleaned up thoroughly afterwards. I love my new floors! And Elegant Hardwood made the installation painless, pleasant and affordable.

We hired Erol and his team to remodel our ground floor (800 sq ft) and the bathroom in the master bedroom. That included the entire floor plan with Porcelain tiles, 3 door frames+baseboards, cabinets, subway tiles for 50-sq-ft wall and painting. From the initial design, choosing the materials, to the completion of the project, Erol and his team performed careful and detailed work that has gone beyond our satisfaction. The project was completed in time as agreed in the contract.

Jorge was all around fantastic. Flooring was my first intro to Thumbtack and it did not disappoint. From first contact to the end, Jorge represented the very best of his profession. His flooring knowledge is high. While I supplied the material he made sure to check the mfrs specs for installation. We could not be more pleased and look forward to recommending Jorge and Epic Hardwoods to anyone.

On January 6, 2018 I had laminate flooring installed in my condo, approximately 250 sf. The job was completed early and special attention was given to moldings and transitions without even asking. Scheduling was a breeze and communication was excellent. I couldn't be happier! Feel 100% comfortable hiring this contractor, I will use them again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
