Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a wedding officiant?

Ask your wedding officiant if they accept digital payments. Many professionals are accept payment via Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Apple Pay, Zelle and other online platforms. Professionals may be more willing to switch to digital payments during the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is typically considered safer than using cash or credit cards. You can see which digital payment options officiants accept by reviewing their online profiles.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a wedding officiant when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a wedding officiant when social distancing, ask if the officiant can offer remote services. Some wedding officiants are choosing to conduct services virtually and/or stand more than 6 feet away from the parties. Discuss possible arrangements with your wedding officiant, and familiarize yourself with your local community guidelines, as well as the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Only move forward if you and the officiant both feel comfortable.

You may want to implement extra precautions, such as using digital payments instead of exchanging cash, sanitizing all involved spaces and waving instead of shaking hands.

How can I find out if a wedding officiant is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of essential services varies by location, so you will need to visit your state or city government website to learn what is considered an essential service in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. Some, but not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a wedding officiant need to enter my home?

This depends on the location of your wedding. Unless the ceremony is being held in your home, a wedding officiant will not need to enter your home before the ceremony. Some couples are choosing to stand outside or go to a vacant public place, so the officiant can conduct the ceremony while maintaining 6 feet of distance. Ask your wedding officiant what kinds of arrangements they offer, including virtual or remote services.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.

Cherise was a great officiant for our quick signing and declaration! She made it through downtown traffic and met us in such a busy area for a very small event and was very positive throughout the entire experience. We're planning on doing an official ceremonial wedding down the road and we won't hesitate to look to Cherise again!

Unfortunately, I didn’t have the pleasure to work with pastor Jose because we’ve decided to have our friend to officiant the wedding. Pastor Jose was very friendly and responded quickly with all my questions.

Short blurb - Chris was nothing short of amazing and we had the honor of having him officiate AND MC our wedding ceremony and reception in June of 2022!!! Longer details - we stumbled across Chris on a whim while frantically looking for a last minute officiant to help us with our wedding ceremony. Upon reaching out to him, he was super responsive and open to discussing what we needed over a call in quick time. Within the first 10 seconds on that call, we knew we were speaking with our officiant! His energy and attention to making our day special was phenomenal! While we were only looking to have an officiant, he shared with us that he is also a professional MC and to definitely consider what we would need for our wedding to make it extraordinary. Fast forward, he asked all the right questions, really spent time out of his schedule to get to know us, made an extra effort to come to our wedding rehearsal before our main event. During the wedding, everyone including our guests LOVED the energy and how he engaged with the audience. His professionalism showed as he collaborated especially well with our wedding coordinator, photographers, and DJs to make our night extraordinary. We would not have done this any other way and are really thankful to have met and gotten to know Chris! For those who are looking for a MC and / or officiant, look no further! He embodies positosis (his podcast) and is an amazing professional whom we had the honor of working with at our special day!!!

Imogen was not just our officiant for our wedding. She was like a family member that made us feel comfortable and at ease. We both HIGHLY recommend Imogen to be your officiant, minister, or just a friend to be there for your special day. If I could rate her higher than 5 stars on thumbtack, I would, but unfortunately she gets the highest possible score available. Thank you Imogen!

Pastor Jose officiated our ceremony this past weekend, and we could not be more pleased. He was punctual, accommodating, and responded quickly to all correspondence. Even with a week’s notice, he was willing and more than happy to officiate our intimate wedding experience. His son Trent was also hired as a photographer, and he too was beyond our expectations. We would highly recommend Pastor Jose to officiate your wedding. Also, if needing a photographer, we would highly suggest, Trent. After our ceremony, we went down to Alki Beach, where he made us feel so comfortable with taking his directive for the perfect shots. We are truly blessed to have had a beautiful union lead by Pastor Jose. Thank you, Pastor for your prayers for our union, and our family! God bless, Paul and Nina

We're so glad that we chose Rosslynn as our wedding officiant. She helped with our vows and they are just beautiful. Rosslynn kept in touch to guide us step by step to prepare documents for the ceremony. In addition, it took us some time to set up the recording equipment. She waited patiently and nicely until everything is ready to start the ceremony. Without her, our wedding won't be so smooth and sweet. Thank you, Rosslynn!

I reached out to LaNora the morning of the wedding as we had our officiant cancel that day. She responded within 30 minutes and could not have been more pleasant and professional to work with under a stressful situation. LaNora did a into phone call with the Bridge and Groom, arrived on-time for the ceremony, walked us through the flow of the ceremony and was open to including our preferences. She was a wonderful officiant who provided positive loving energy to the marriage ceremony. Everyone present commented about how much they liked LaNora! Nothing but 5 stars!

Our custom ceremony was beautiful. It included details about us, very personalized, and was exactly what we had in mind. When we met with Eris, pre-wedding, she took her time and asked us all sorts of questions so she could better personalize our ceremony. Nothing ever felt rushed. Eris went above and beyond to be sure our day was special and all about us. We couldn’t have asked for more. Will definitely recommend to anyone needing a wedding officiant.

At first, our experience was great. He showed up to our ceremony on time and he even arranged his son as a photographer for us. Everything was easy and smooth the day of our ceremony. However, we have had nothing but complications with his services and the photography services after our ceremony. For starters, it took over 2 weeks to receive our wedding photos and the photographer would not get back to us or his father to even let us know when we could expect our photos. I was beginning to think I paid $250 and wouldn’t receive any photos and it wasn’t until I threatened legal action that I finally received my photos. The photos were beautiful once we finally received them, however we spent time having a first reveal and having him photograph that special moment, and he completely excluded those photos so we didn’t get to see that moment. The biggest complication so far is our wedding was in January and it is now March and our wedding isn’t even recorded. We moved states after getting married, the officiant had us mail in the marriage certificate that was filled out by him, me and my husband, and our witnesses. We mailed it in and then we moved states. I called the Washington State Records Office and they have not recorded our marriage yet because there were mistakes made on the marriage certificate by the officiant that needed to be corrected. It was mailed back to the officiant to correct but they haven’t received it back yet from him to record our marriage. I had to call and find this out myself, there was no communication from him saying he received it sent back to him and that he would take care of it. If the Records Office doesn’t receive it within 60 days from them sending it to him, our marriage is not official and we would have to get married again. We are in a completely different state now than our officiant, our witnesses flew in from 3 different states, and we are not in a position to hold another ceremony again because he never sent in the corrected marriage certificate. I need the official marriage license to change my last name and even get a new drivers license in my new state, change my social, etc. and it’s holding me up from getting a job right now. This is so frustrating as we are a young couple with a baby on the way with no funds to have a wedding ceremony re-do. I have read many other reviews with the same complaints about the photographer and issues with the officiant filing their marriage certificate properly. I wish I had read all the reviews thoroughly. It is very disappointing that we had these issues after the fact because we had such a great experience with them the day of our wedding.

Like many couples during these tough times my wife and I had to make many changes with our wedding. Rosslynn really made this entire experience so special and enjoyable for us with her responsiveness, her positive vibe, many helpful advice regarding the planning of our wedding day, and with a lovely ceremony. She is very communicative and professional. She spent time with us virtually when we first hired her to get to know us better, stayed in communication via text/email leading up to the wedding day, came early on the day to scout the wedding venue, and stayed in touch with us after the wedding when we had questions about the marriage certificate. She provided such great service! I feel confident recommending her services to anyone who is looking for a top quality officiant for their special day. Thank you Rosslynn!

Susan was absolutely amazing and so sweet! She officiated our wedding on June 18th of this year. I know that we weren't the easiest couple to work with seeing that we live out of town, and I was very scatterbrained, but she kept us on track and gave us loads of information, help and encouragement. Two thumbs up and would defiantly recommend her to anyone getting married in the Seattle area.

I want to say thank you to, Cherise! My husband and I got married last weekend and boy was the ceremony magical. From the time we booked with Cherise to leading to the wedding, communication was on point. Cherise took our questionnaire and made our ceremony memorable. Thank you to the best officiant out there. PS. we have the same first name so she must be great!

Tim officiated our wedding last weekend. I would highly recommend him to anyone considering booking him as their officiant. From start to finish, Tim is responsive, warm, and collaborative/easy to work with. We wanted to have an intimate, non-denominational ceremony in our favorite park in West Seattle, and Tim was flexible about date and helped share his favorite ceremony script templates for us to read and modify in advance of the day. We only ended up changing one or two lines, it was so thoughtfully and beautifully written as he had it. We wanted to keep the event restricted to just us and our infant daughter in attendance, so Tim was kind enough to offer to bring his lovely wife and his friend as our witnesses for the marriage. On the day of the ceremony, Tim was a thoughtful and excellent officiant. He genuinely loves what he does and it shows. You won’t be disappointed to book him for your event. Thanks, Tim!

I spoke to John on the phone a few months before my wedding, stressing out about finding the perfect officiant. From our first conversation, I knew he was the one! He was professional, kind, funny, and put me at ease about the whole ceremony. I could just tell he would do a great job. He sent us a rough draft of what our ceremony would look like, I sent him a couple of edits that I wanted to be changed, and he took them and tailored it to make our ceremony just how we wanted. An officiant can really make or break the ceremony (obviously) and sets the tone for your whole wedding I think. John really played a part in making our big day the BEST DAY EVER! My parents loved him and guests told us how much they enjoyed our ceremony. We would totally recommend him to anyone!
