Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a tiler when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a tiler in your area, stay at least 6 feet away from worker(s), don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payment platforms instead of cash or a check. During the consultation, put a plan together to help ensure everyone's safety.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Bogdan, came out, gave me an estimate & finished the job promptly. Also, he was agreeable to use tile supplies I'd already purchased. Both our bathroom floors look amazing. Would definitely hire him again.

We hired Olvera to install a kitchen backsplash. They were quick to respond to texts, emails, calls and Mauricio showed up on time on the date we set up. The tile we selected was more difficult to work with than standard tile and after Mauricio finished laying it, we noticed some flaws with the pattern being off in some areas. After pointing out these issues, Mauricio fixed the problem areas without complaint. He was very dedicated to making sure we were happy with their work and the end result. We absolutely love our new backsplash and would hire Olvera again in the future.

Working with Daniel is great. The shape of the room vs the tiles was a little tricky in some places, and Daniel had the solutions. He always consulted with us as to our preferences. He is methodical in his installation and the finished job is fantastic. Thank you Daniel! Hire this guy.

FANTASTIC work done by Stan!! I had a kitchen back splash installed and he did fabulous work! My pictures do not do justice to the project. This was not an easy install as the glass and metal pieces needed to interlock together so he had to do many cuts to fit them tightly. Highly recommend this contractor and will use them again should I need more tile work done in my home!!

Jonathan is a nice young man who responded quickly to the request for tiling. He kept the site clean while working which is a big plus. The tiling was done in one day (which wasn't necessary on my side but I understand benefits a contractor). He sent photos of previous work which corresponded well with what I needed done. On the minus side: set up time to come estimate, no show and no call until 6 hours later. Offer to come over after that work day, ok'd by us, no show that evening. Set time at 10AM next day to contact, again later than arranged. Once he looked at the project he offered to do the work the next day. This had us scuffling a bit to arrange the site, get payment etc. So overall time seemed very fluid and felt to me as the customer that I was frequently off balance and not in the loop, i.e, less than good communication. Job quality so far seems ok. It was a relatively small one < 30 sf so I am cognizant it is not a big $ job. Quality seems ok so far as it is not yet dry. The detail of using caulk at juncture of countertop and backsplash was not Jon's regular procedure, but I am pretty sure it is standard practice. I asked for caulk; it was placed over the grout and not finished with a tool or finger so we removed it. Also it was white, there are clear caulks available.

I interviewed a few of the businesses that responded to my job. Thumbtack has made it difficult in that I really wanted everybody that interviewed to get to do the work, as they all seemed quite capable & very very nice, however, even in the difficulty of choosing, CLEARVIEW brought the "Purple Ribbon" ideas to my project in how they suggested it would be finished with ideas that were quite desirable to what I would like, and when the project was finished I was more than completely satisfied. CLEARVIEW works at amazing speeds & precise accuracy. They lay tiles as if they're dealing dominos...very impressive ! They completed the work in the amount of time they said it would be. I would hire them again. Thank you :)
