Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Since most dog training is for the owners and not the pet, Cat knows how to train both animal and owner. What I love about her methods is that they are all non aggressive or punitive. She could be Scottsdale's Dog Whisper she is so good.

Had an initial meeting on Monday and was very impressed with Galen's professionalism and friendliness. She communicated well and I felt totally comfortable with her around my dog. I look forward to beginning the training. I would definitely recommend that if you are looking for a do trainer, give Galen or anyone else with Lorenzo's Dog Training Team a call.

This is the best dog training experience I have had. Elisa, is a great trainer, her instructions are clear, easy to understand and best of all leaves the training relationship to the dog owner working with the dog. In just five sessions, I had control over my puppy with the commands " Come, Place, Off , Sit, quiet and stay." Some commands my dog knew, but being very intelligent (Border collie-Poodle Hybrid), she was not always reliable about obeying. Now she obeys all commands. She loves people, and jumping with excitement was a real problem, she now sits and lets people pet her without jumping on them. The best bonus is that my dog and I are closer, and really enjoy our time together. She knows what is expected, and that seems to relax her because her world is more predictable. The lessons with Fit Dog Training were the best investment I have ever made with my dog.

Katelynn responded very quickly when I reached out to her about dog training, and she was flexible in scheduling a time that worked for my girlfriend and I for our dog's evaluation.

We highly recommend Fit Dog Training for your dog, at any stage of development. Elisa was punctual and endeared herself to our 5-month puppy right away. She gave us great tips and instructions on how to potty train her, obey simple commands, and made the entire experience fun!

Kimberly has been a wonderful trainer for my Husky/shepherd mix. When training, not only does she understand dogs and the idiosyncrasies of various breeds but also takes into consideration the unique personality of the dog and the goals of training set by the owner. She is also the only trainer that guarantees her work until your pet demonstrates full capabilities to that which was taught in training. I highly recommend Kimberly and “I love your pet” services. She provides exceptional service and is extremely easy to communicate with. Top notch provider with a big thumbs up.

We start our lessons next week but up to this point everything has been 5 stars all the way. I am a new dog owner so things have been a bit overwhelming for me. I think that Tom will train me to help train my dog. Tom answers your questions along the way and I've learned a tremendous amount in our two appointments thus far. I'm looking forward to our hands on lessons with my dog.

We had a number of pet trainers in the past without any change in dog behavior. Kim is very knowledgeable and experienced in dealing with obstinate pets and she really cares about the outcome. She is thoughtful in her approach and considers downstream impacts of various training approaches. Highly recommend

Koco was awesome with us and our dog! In our initial phone conversation about our dog's issues, she told us they were common things seen with rescue dogs and could be fixed in one session. We were skeptical because we thought our dog's issues were so severe and were prepared for having to do through multiple sessions. Luckily Koco proved us wrong and within the first 15 minutes of our one session, we saw immediate improvements in our dog's behavior. We are confident that her advice is sound and based on extensive experience with rescues. We highly recommend Rescue Dog Training and Koco!

He was up front and honest. He actually said we don't really need his services, but offered to help anytime or answer questions via his phone. He was very gentle with our dogs, and I could tell our dogs were comfortable with him. Would recommend him to anyone that wants a compassionate trainer.

This review is an initial review based on inintial contact and follow up with me. They responded to my initial request for you information on dog training. I received a reply within a few minutes I got the information I requested and told them I would call them back. A few days later I was contacted again as a follow-up to my initial questions. I received an a follow up call and because of this now have scheduled for them to come out for evaluation and training of our service dog.

My Perfect Pup was a brat, she is so cute I spoiled her....... Fit Dog Training was the best thing I could have done for us. She not only helps train the animals but she also trains the owner on better ways to handle situations. She takes the time to explain what is happening and how to correct. Now my perfect pup is PERFECT! Best money and investment I have spent!

We hired K9 for a few specific training areas with our dog. He definitely knows his stuff! He was very patient and knowledgeable. The only odd thing was the payment structure so be sure to have a clear understanding of this.

KoCo is professional, knowlegable, and is clearly interested in delivering a positive outcome for both the dog as well as the owners. She went above and beyond spending time on the phone answering questions, and then during our training session took all the time needed to make the encounter a success. There was a marked difference and improvement in our dog’s behavior during and (now also after) our session. We were given many tips and excellent advice along with training techniques, and will definitely contact KoCo again for further training. Very impressed!

Blake is amazing! My dog is definitely in his teenage years and can be a lot to handle at times. Blake immediately came in and let me know that his behavior was totally normal and taught me how to relax when working with him. This was the first and most important change I made in my training relationship with my dog. I have made huge progress with my dog in just a few months and am so grateful for the things Blake has taught me. I highly recommend Blake! She is super easy to work with, has a very good read on my dog (as well as me!), and has been super impactful in me working with him.

I have a 2 year old Rottweiler mix rescue who was luckily easy to manage when super young but over the last two months started becoming dominant over me, lunging toward dogs in public and increasingly more and more difficult to manage or train. Since she was almost two years of age I thought I was doomed in turning around bad habits and behavior - until I found Koco. We met at Chapparel Dog Park on a Saturday afternoon. There were a lot of doggie distractions so this served as the perfect location for this type of training. My boyfriend and I, who both raise Dakota, were there together and Koco took the time to not only explain her training techniques to us but provided us the opportunity to try them ourselves with her there to guide and correct. Koco was so positive, patient and knowledgeable in her technique. I left our time together feeling excited, comfortable and confident. I was so impressed with how Koco professionally handled my pup while praising and loving her at the same time. Her point of view really resonated with me in that this experience is more than just training your dog but a way to build a bond and connection that will be beneficial for years to come. I HIGHLY recommend Koco to anyone seeking this type of expertise. I’d suggest going down this route 100 times instead of training at a random franchised facility or dropping your dog off at Petsmart. What a perfect Saturday afternoon, and I can’t wait to schedule another session after we’ve had the time to practice all that we learned.

Kim was amazing. I highly recommend anyone looking for their dog to be trained the right way, choose Kim. Worth every penny for what is included. She will not stop until you are happy. Super professional and is a complete natural. Could not be happier with her services. Thank you Kim!

The Thumbtack ad is misleading saying its $35/session. She was responsive initially and scheduled the first visit and evaluation and said it costs $35 for gas and time. When I asked about session prices afterward or ballpark idea on what it would cost for training, she refused to answer. She quit responding. It seemed deceitful to me. I went with another Thumbtack dog trainer who discussed it with me in full over the phone.

Bruce is such an awesome trainer and person! Our dog fell in love with him the moment he walked in the door and he didn't leave until we felt totally comfortable with everything he had taught us. We have already seen amazing improvement in our dog in just 24 hours. And he has promised us support as we work with our girl on a regular basis. I can't thank him enough for everything he did for us!
