Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a type of martial art whose basic moves are widely practiced in personal and group fitness regimens. In combat kickboxing, two competitors fight using four points of contact — both hands and both feet — unlike traditional boxing, where competitors are allowed to use their hands. In competitive kickboxing, opponents must remain standing, and no fighting can occur on the mat or ground. Kickboxing has its roots in Muay Thai and other ancient martial arts. Some elemental moves from kickboxing include roundhouse kicks, back kicks, hooks, uppercuts and more.

Modern group fitness kickboxing is practiced in gyms and workout studios across the country. It draws its moves from combat kickboxing, but instead of fighting with an opponent, participants perform jabs, crosses, punches and kicks in instructor-led, choreographed routines set to music. Personal trainers also incorporate kickboxing moves into workout routines, spending time punching and kicking the bag. These strength-building moves, mixed with high-intensity intervals, boost heart rate and increase strength.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session. Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

I've had a number of personal trainers before. When I relocated to San Diego, I knew I wanted to work with a trainer who would tailor to me, not put me on their canned program. Markshane offered a consultation (which included a workout and fitness assessment) that lasted almost 90 minutes, and addressed all my concerns. Now that we've trained together for a week, I feel I made the right decision moving foward with him.

Markshane is awesome. Great energy and as much as I was looking for a place to get personal training for my fitness goals I didn’t expect to find such a great place! Very personable, knowledgeable, polite and motivating through a workout. Looking forward to my next workouts at Shape Up Studio!

This worked out way better than I had hoped. I wanted a personal trainer who would take my, ahem, more mature age into account and moderate the exercise routines according to my needs. I'm not looking to compete in a muscle contest - just get and stay fit. I was looking for a trainer who gave me the right amount of core exercises without over doing it. Joey was perfect. I was not coddled but had to extend myself; he helped me go that extra little bit that I don't force myself to do. Body by Dave trains all ages and expectations of course but if you want to stay fit for health, these guys definitely know how to make that happen.

It is a genuine pleasure and honor to recommend and provide a reference for M.I.S. Cassandra Fitness (Cassandra) as a personal trainer. Cassandra provides training for my two children, ages 10 & 11, and on occasion, I would join a training session as well. Being very goal-oriented as well as a considerate person, Cassandra is always punctual, yet flexible, depending on the changing needs of the kids. She is keenly devoted to her work, but also a real people person and she is enjoyable to be around; she is well organized and strives to learn more for the betterment of her clients. Without exception, Cassandra puts training priorities first, knowing that the key to accomplishing better fitness is consistency, good habits and following up, among other wonderful traits. Cassandra puts forth the extra effort to ensure both children thoroughly participate and she enjoys being an active part of the workout sessions. She even visited my son’s karate studio, to better tailor his workouts! I have found Cassandra to be caring and diligent in the training of the kids, a true blessing. I feel confident she will be an asset to any person’s training program (regardless of your age) and improve your overall health and conditioning. In closing, let me say I have complete faith in recommending Cassandra for any and all of your personal training needs!

Rich was great! This was my first experience with a personal trainer, but he made it all way less scary. He showed that he genuinely cared about my fitness goals and me as a person as well during our workout sessions. He taught me a lot about not only the exercise, but also the nutrition aspects of healthy living as well. He is very knowledgeable about what he does. I would highly recommend Rich.

I’ve tried it all; weight watchers, fasting, working out on my own, and using other “personal trainers”. Noticed how I put quotations around personal trainers? The personal trainers I used in the past never payed attention to my form during workouts, never really spotted me during difficult weight training, didn’t explain what muscles were being used during certain workouts, and worst of all they were constantly on their phone. Nick is a LEGIT personal trainer. If you’re the type of person who needs the extra support in your fitness journey then Nick is the one for you. From nutrition to exercise Nick is right there beside you every step of the way. I can always count on Nick to ensure I workout correctly and safely and most of all he pays attention and offers tremendous amount of motivation. Nick has been able to sense (without me saying too much) that I feel discouraged during workouts and on numerous occasions Nick has given me the best pep talks to get me back on track. Nick is extremely laid back and is always smiling with a positive attitude no matter what. I HATED any type of exercise before meeting Nick, now I’m so excited to get into the gym and set PRs (personal records). I’ve worked with Nick for only 7 weeks and I’m already seeing amazing results. At my first weigh in (the four week mark) I lost a total of 4 inches off my waist and lost a total of 12 pounds!!! I’m so happy to have found Nick because I’m so excited to continue to develop this new lifestyle with his help.

Corrects your positions and encourages u to keep pushing yourself and he makes it in a way that makes u feel good about yourself! There are many different people w different fitness levels at shape up so u don't feel self conscious at all. I signed up for 3mo of 1on1 training and very excited!! C u Monday Markshane!!

I am not sure where to start because there are so many things I like and appreciate when it comes to working with Michael. I have worked with a few other personal trainers and know that engaging a personal trainer is a commitment. They become very involved in your life and goals, so it is important to find a good one that suits your specific style and needs. I can confidently say Michael is a good one. Tom is awesome! He has taught me so much about physical fitness as well as what sort of nutrition I should be putting into my body. He completely changed how I look at food and nutrition. I am so much more mindful of what I eat now. And I feel amazing! Before I met with Tom, I was always so tired and lethargic, especially after meals. And I don't even have kids yet!! Once I started training with Tom, he enlightened me with his vast knowledge of health and fitness. Now I am just so much more aware. He's great! Very patient, but gets the job done! He's the best out there!!! Don't hesitate to choose him as your personal trainer!

I started working with Candon almost two years now and it has proven to be an amazing investment. He is a very professional and knowledgeable trainer in both physical fitness and nutrition. When I started working with Candon he was super flexible with my workout routine and fitness goals; I was newly pregnant and he was able to work with me throughout my pregnancy and beyond. One of the many reasons to choose a personal trainer is that they can watch how you exercise and tweak your posture/movements/etc to better tone your muscles and create a fitness routine so that you actually see results! Candon customizes your plan to fit you as well as push you to be better. He is fantastic at what he does and I am stronger because of it! Candon is always looking for ways to change things up and keep the workout interesting; I’m always super energized after our sessions! Candon is super flexible with scheduling around peoples’ busy lives. He also creates routines for you to do outside of your sessions with him. He is very encouraging and has become a good friend! I can’t say enough about him! He is the best.

After months and months of researching trying to find the best fit for my personal training needs, I finally found Zack! Zack has been my personal trainer for almost a month now and I am getting closer to my goals, which are; leaner, stronger and to have better diet! Zack is a quality personal trainer - he will listen to your goals and will work around it, he pays very close attention to your progress, he is very attentive to your form and most importantly your body. In addition to working my tail off, he provides nutritional coaching (he is a certified nutrition coach) to ensure that the work I put in the gym doesn't go to waste because of bad eating habits. Oh, mind you, i still get to eat ice cream, but he's recommended alternatives to stay within my recommended caloric intake. It's impressive! With regards to the workouts, he really knows what he's doing. My workouts are always explosive and I've not seen a day where I'm not sore somewhere. My training sessions (twice weekly) are efficient and extremely well planned. Sometimes I have compound workouts and some session I would have isolation exercises and it definitely works for me! I dig the variety. If you are reading this, because you're undecided, I think you should give it a shot. This guy is passionate, really nice and really good at what he does. I should add that the price isn't an issue for me - he's affordable and that's why I also selected him. Stop wasting your time dilly dallying at the gym, and see a personal trainer. You won't regret it! If you decide to see him, you'll see yourself doing this rope workout :) I'll post again when I'm nearing my results, but that shouldn't be very soon. If you're ready to commit and ready for a change ... HE IS THE MAN!

If you’re a weightlifting beginner looking for a personal trainer to drench you in sunshine, unicorns and promises of an instantly-ripped and shredded physique, then Wes Jones IS NOT the trainer for you. However, if you’re looking for a highly knowledgeable and well-seasoned professional to coach, lead and inspire you on your quest to gain muscle at a persistent and natural pace— and if you are willing to WORK HARD— then I highly recommend Wes Jones and his Silverback Club. Rather than offering me a “one size fits all” workout regimen during our first meeting, Wes instead listened to the reasons I had for seeking a personal trainer and then tailored a workout plan based specifically on my needs and how often I could train. Being that diet is a significant part of muscle gain, Wes educates his clients on developing a daily nutrition plan so as to get the most out of every workout. And, as a bonus, if you ever confuse your protein with your carbs, or if you feel like the jock at GNC is about to sell you a bottle of snake oil rather than the supplements you meant to purchase, Wes is always just a text message away, offering his advice free of charge. The journey to a perfect body begins with a single rep, and I’m happy that I found somebody like Wes Jones to help guide me on that journey.

After years of trying to lose weight on my own , trying to go to the gym, trying to exercise at home, I finally decided to hire a personal trainer to get to where I wanted to be. It was just not happening on my own. Laziness and excuses kept getting in the way. I did A LOT of research, and set up multiple consultations with various trainers to see who would be a good fit for me. I chose to go with Armin because he was the only one that actually listened, asked a lot of questions and was genuinely interested in my goals, where I wanted to get to, my diet, etc. He genuinely wanted help me achieve my goals. After multiple sessions, I’m so happy with our training so far. He really cares, is very professional , and I appreciate that he takes time with me since I have no experience with working out. Im super excited with the results so far and how great I’ve been feeling. Best decision for sure.

Hey Guys, Let me give you a little background on what i was before and after: I started of with Markshane when i was at 227 pounds (around 230 to be precise), this was the first time I had hired a trainer, after trying a lot of different things at the local gym. I trained with him for close to four months.. Things that I loved: 1. The training is never the same, he made it as interesting and fun as possible. 2. You will clearly identify differences with our body within the first ten days ( if you eat right though !! ) 3. He is very understanding of what your limits are and pushes you to your best. Also I have to mention about jeremy here: He worked with me for the most part of my training here, 1. I loved the way he in- cooperates exercises that you love in the training session - I always wanted to do pull ups which I could never do before (even 1 was insane!), by the time i left I could do different variations in pull ups. 2. Jeremy is very helpful in answering all the questions that you have, I used to ask him the dumbest questions possible and he was always patient. I wanted to continue training here so badly, but I had to relocate to San Fransisco. The reason I am writing this review after so long is, I have tried to work with personal trainers in the bay area, but none of them even come close to these guys... Miss you guys so much !!!! Thanks for the help in kickstarting my fitness.

Can’t say enough amazing things about Shape Up studio. I came in not knowing what to expect being that I’m new to personal training and working out in general. Markshane did an intake meeting with me where he went over my goals, my current habits and then went through a comprehensive set of tests to get a baseline for my BMI, body fat percentage, etc. Most trainers would just tell you where you stand verbally but he was caring enough to provide me with the report regardless of if I decided to sign up with him or not. After training with him for the first time, I quickly learned that he’s punctual, invested in his clients success, extremely patient and appropriately pushes you to do your best. He modified my workout to fit where I was in my progress and even sent me a personalized video for me to workout to during the days I didn’t see him. Who does that?! You can tell he’s been doing this for years and knows his stuff. The studio itself has a bunch of different machines and equipment so you know you’re getting your money’s worth. Shout out to all the trainers there (but especially Markshane and Alfie)
