Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How can I find out if a roofer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a roofer is an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by visiting your state or city’s government website. Local governments are providing up-to-date information for residents during this time.

A national guideline is available on CISA’s website, Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page addresses 16 different categories of essential infrastructure sectors, but note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Hired Ramon and his crew to repair two holes in our roof and clean out the gutters. He was able to come out immediately, inspect the roof, quote us for the repair and cleaning work and even brought some things to our attention that we should keep an eye on. He and his crew were very thorough, quick and did a great job. We definitely won't hesitate to have him come back out for future roofing needs.

Partially completed the job but never came back to finish it. When it rains like today, there’s still leak from the roof. Not gonna hire him anymore.

Monty is absolutely amazing! He replaced my roof in Hayward, CA and since I was out of state he communicated with me thru every step of the process. He was quick to respond with an extremely competitive quote & offered his expert advice on upgrading from just basic tar & gravel to a shingled roof that has much better curb appeal. He went above and beyond & even replaced missing vents that we didn’t even realize were needed until the project began. I would HIGHLY recommend going with his company. Definite five star service & you won’t be disappointed!

Daniel Luna replied quickly with my quote request to repair the leak in our roof.He was able to accommodate me to his busy schedule last Saturday in a long holiday weekend. His quote price is reasonable for the tile roof repair. He took picture of the damage tile and took picture of the work he did. So far I don’t see any leak in my roof but he told me to call him right away if there is any. He is easy to deal with and knowledgeable with what he does. I will use him with my next project in my house. He is punctual and has the professionalism attitude towards his work.

Excellent work. One of the best vendor experiences I've had and I work with a lot of construction crews. Communication is always open and straightforward. Mr. Leon will always ask you first and give you information, reason and price for anything extra. He is very considerate and professional. I chose Leon Bros because he took the time to come over and get on the roof and inspect for a thorough proposal. And he did our neighbor's, which their roof looks really good. For customers: always keep a few extra thousand on hand in case things come up like hidden damage and also the permit fee may not be in the quote. Leon Bros got our 1800 sq home done in 4 days. Plus installed metal gutter guards at our request. And replaced our broken barge. He offered to paint any exposed wood decking, but we were happy and accepted just prime since we're going to repaint the house. There were 3 layers removed and we went with shingles. Came on time each day, quality craftsmanship and worked clean. Demo day is messy. Be prepared and know to prep (cover items or move things out of the way). You do not have to be home during the work. They did a great job working clean. And they clean up after every day. They get the job done. We highly recommend.
