Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

How can I find out if a painter is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a painter is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, visit your local jurisdiction or state’s government website for information.

The CISA website also provides a helpful resource: Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This page is intended for a national audience and includes 16 different categories of critical infrastructure sectors. Some jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure, but not all of them do.

Can I use digital payments to pay for painting services?

Many painters accept digital payments through Venmo, Square Cash, Google Pay, PayPal, Zelle and others. Due to COVID-19, others may quickly adopt this technology to maintain social distancing practices and follow health recommendations.

Contact professionals beforehand to ensure they’re able to accept digital payments and continue to follow safety guidelines throughout your interactions. Compare local interior and exterior painters’ profiles to see which types of payments they accept.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

Do painters offer remote or virtual services?

Though painting has always been an in-person job, painters may be willing to offer some virtual help due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. If you come across painters’ profiles that state they offer remote services, message the painters to see what those services include.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Josh and his crew worked tirelessly to do an amazing job painting the exterior of our house. He helped us find the perfect color combination. We originally picked a color that, after applying to the stucco, was just not what we were looking for. Josh went out of his way to help find the perfect base coat. He actually matched the color of my car's interior by taking a photo and bringing all of the paint back to the paint store to remix the paint for a custom color - PERFECT. His crew power washed, sealed cracks, and repaired the fascia and other areas that had dry rot. He also replaced and painted our side door to the garage and then did an amazing job on our front door, which had 42 years of wear. It looks like a new door. Thank you, Josh.

I needed to paint my living room and kitchen, and Juan was great. Pricing was very reasonable and on top of that he was very open to minor touch ups that we saw as the paint dried. Juan made multiple trips to make sure we were satisfied. 5 stars.

The team at Big League Painting did an excellent job, repainting my townhome. They were very professional throughout the entire process - from giving a correct estimate to explaining issues that need to be fixed. Kept me up to date with videos and completed the job to my satisfaction. Above all, their estimate/quote was one of the most reasonable in the area - I had contacted and gotten estimates from close to 10 professionals in the area. Big League's quote was the best!! I definitely will rehire you guys in the future if I have another Painting project to be done.

I hired Juan Carlos Mora at Pandas Painting to paint three rooms and a domed ceiling. I was impressed with both Juan Carlos and his foreman, Rodrigo, who came out to give the initial quote and was the primary painter on the job. Their quote was extremely competitive - about 40% lower than the next-best bidder, and about 75% lower than the highest bidder. But I could tell from Rodrigo's comments about the work to be done that the competitive price did not mean low quality, it just meant a very good deal for the work to be done very well. They did the work in a very timely way (starting on Sunday July 5), and completely met my expectations about the quality of the work - all edges were caulked, texture problems on the existing walls were repaired, in some rooms the ceiling was repainted to correct previous patches, and the quality of the paint job and particularly the edge cutting was immaculate. I was so pleased with the job and the very reasonable price that I immediately asked them to do another project: painting another room, and three closet interiors. They also gave a very reasonable bid on this work, did the work in a timely and professional way, and delivered a great result with highest quality. I found both Juan Carlos and Rodrigo to be professional, courteous, and friendly, and very knowledgeable and trustworthy. They followed through on every commitment they made, and it was clear that they really wanted me to be very happy with the job. I will use Pandas Painting again for future projects, and I recommend them very highly. Sincerely, L.W., Milpitas, CA

Rolando did a fantastic job for the interior painting of our house at a reasonable price. He took the time to show us what color combination may look good. In every step asked for feedback and very quick to accommodate if we changed our mind. Highly recommend him.

Johnny and his crew did an outstanding and professional job painting the exterior of my house. Quote was quick and very competitive. We schedule the work around other trim repairs that I had to competed. I am very particular about the quality of the finish product, and Johnny happily returned to touch up areas and ensure that I was satisfied with all aspects of his work. Color was perfect and finished edging where colors met were neat and accurate. Yes, I would definitely recommend this team.

Allan was outstanding. He responded quickly to my request and gave me a very good estimate. We wanted the job to be done the following week and he made it happen. Allan had another job he had to attend to, so he sub contract this out to Omar Madrid of Madrid Painters. Oh my gosh, Omar is the hardest working man I have ever seen. In the blistering heat wave, he redid out ceilings and painted the whole interior in less time than what was expected. I would definitely hire these two gentlemen again.
