We recently bought an older fixer upper and Jose has helped us with several jobs. He removed popcorn ceiling, texturized, put in new drywall and pot lights, did painting, installed floor tile, and is now tiling my new shower. He has a lot of overall construction experience and brings important knowledge to the job. His work has been quality and looks really nice. His pricing is very competitive and he is responsive and easy to work with. We had a few last minute delays on our end getting materials and he kindly rescheduled several times. We are going to work with him on some outside hardscape and fencing as well. We highly recommend Jose and his team. (I will add some photos soon)

Emmy and her crew were communicative, personable and efficient. They did a fantastic and quick job of taking apart a heavy and bulky ping pong table, relocating it to another floor and assembled it back together making it look easier said than done. We will definitely utilize Emmy's services again and recommend her highly.

Mohammad is an EXCELLENT professional that provides a fantastic service for the money. We needed to have our floors removed and replaced due to flood damage. I was a little skeptical about using someone I found from the internet, but I looked at his previous work and decided to give him a try. I'm very glad I did. The job is about 95% complete and I am extremely happy with the results. All that is left is a few areas around the fire place and kitchen and it will be complete. In fact, Mohammad is coming back for those areas with special tools, because the floor store I purchased the materials from gave the wrong size, and Mohammad is going to fix it. He is extremely knowledgeable about floor installation, and he even allowed me to repaint and replace my baseboards, to give the house a completely new look. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed working with Mohammad Ghaem. I'm using him again to build custom made pieces in my home. I will add more photos once everything is complete so future customers can see the completed finished product. I'm very happy with the results so far and I highly recommend him. He is a great person, that delivers a quality product, at a great price.

Francisco was very patient as we took our time in selecting the flooring that would best match our home. After the selection we set a date and he and his crew were on time to begin the prepping and installation. They were very detailed, down to the area behind the door jambs and under appliances where few people ever look at. We constantly receive compliments on our kitchen, pantry, dining and laundry areas. Thank you TPG for a great job.

Where do I even start with Freedom Renovation. They have such a large showroom with many different cabinet styles and countertops displaying their quality work. Their showroom looks like something out of a magazine. Upon first impression I could not believe that everything that was done in the showroom was done by their exceptional staff. After a few weeks of discussing my planned kitchen remodel with the project manager Allen, my wife and I decided to hire Freedom Renovation. When we had signed we were told that the remodel would take about a month and a half, much to our surprise they were done in just a little over three weeks. I know I made the right choice in choosing freedom because my new kitchen looks better than anything I could've ever imagined. All of the staff was nice, friendly, courteous and excelled in customer service. I had heard some horror stories from my friends about other contractors and honestly was scared to have my kitchen remodeled. Throughout the entire remodel they kept me informed and up-to-date as to the entire progress of my kitchen. I always felt that Freedom Renovation had my best interest at heart. If you are looking for a bathroom or kitchen remodel or new floors installed I highly recommend them. The quality of the work they provide is unparalleled. My wife and I are already planning our bathroom remodel with them. Thank you Allen and your team you have made our dream kitchen come true.

I hired Saul and his team to do demo of 1000 sqft tile, leveling of concrete subfloor, installing new laminate floors. Saul and his team were great to work with. They showed up each day on time, did a quality job on the demo and install and had competitive rates. Saul is very knowledgeable and shared some tips before I installed my kitchen cabinets which worked well with the floor install. It was a good process working with Saul and I would hire him again.

I love this company. I had a contractor quit halfway through our remodel job. Angelo arrived and saved us. He was an angel. Always trying to help us out. He painted, helped fix the floors, helped with some plumbing and electrical, and so much more! He and his team can do it all. He always showed up at the time and date he said he would. He worked long hours to help us out. Whether your job is large or small, I do not think you will find better.

Martin and his crew did great work for us. They were professional and friendly. We originally had them give us a bid just to remove popcorn ceiling and repair some drywall, but we ended up hiring them to do lots more work - everything from installing can lighting with new electrical lines to installing new vinyl windows.

We just wrapped up the fence project for our house which was massive. Dick followed my concept and made revisions whenever i required. It was fun and easy to work with him. There's always a 2 way mindset. It turned out excellent, including the trellis and pergola. The 2 small gates out front to give us security was installed and my overall look is splendid to view! Would recommend Dick to anyone having a home project. He delivers!

I was sad to see Cory complete the installation of my wood floors. He was not only a professional but he became a friend as well. Cory is unique, in that, he is the pro you always wanted but never got. Cory is thorough in every aspect of his profession and I'm over joyed, as is my wife with our new gorgeous wood floors. Thanks Cory for all your dedication and hard work. Ken and Janet DeHart

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
