Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

Which is better: porcelain or ceramic tile?

Porcelain tiles are more durable and have a longer lifespan than ceramic tile. If you're installing flooring in an area with high traffic or lots of heavy furniture, porcelain tiles will look better for longer. They’re also very easy to clean and maintain. Porcelain is also very water-resistant and can hold up in places like bathrooms and rooms with jacuzzis, hot tubs, or swimming pools.

But if the cost is your top priority, ceramic tiles are often more affordable. Ceramic tile prices start as low as $0.45 or $0.50 per square foot, and porcelain tile starts at $3 per square foot.

Does tile flooring increase home value?

Having a tile floor may increase your home’s value, but it might depend on the type of tile you install and the trends in the real estate market.

Chat with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out what types of home repairs and remodeling projects you should tackle before you put your home on the market. It might make sense to add new tiles when renovating your kitchen or bathroom, for example.

If you decide to include new tiling in your home remodeling project, contact the best tile installation pros near you to get free estimates.

What’s the difference between porcelain and ceramic tile?

Ceramic and porcelain are some of the more popular types of tile, but there are a few differences:

Porcelain Tile

Ceramic Tile

More durable, have a longer lifespan

Cheaper, easier to install

Better for high-traffic areas

Recommended for interior floors, walls

Slightly more water-resistant

Softer, easier to cut

Consult with a top tile contractor near you and get free estimates on how much installing tile will cost you.

What is the best tile?

There are many different types of tile to choose from, and they all have unique benefits when it comes to aesthetics, longevity, durability and safety.

Porcelain and ceramic tile are often popular in kitchens and bathrooms because they are water-resistant, making them a go-to choice for floors and backsplashes. Marble tile is also a great choice for kitchen and bathroom floors, and granite tiles are popular for countertops.

Consult with a tile installation professional to figure out what type of tile you should install in your home.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Adam did a fantastic job of installing the tile at my entrance and along the fireplace floor. First he had to remove the existing tile and he made sure dust did not get all over my home. It was a messy job and the tile butted up right next to the fireplace stone which made the job fairly intricate. Posted are the finished work and the tile looks great. He was exceptionally good at detail and I highly recommend him!

Dennis is great! I hired him to install some tile in our kitchen where a previous homeowner had removed the backsplash to put in a window, but never finished the job. He was quick to respond, gave a reasonable quote, gave me some suggestions about where to look for tile to match the rest of the kitchen, and even tried to find the tile himself. Once I found/ordered the tile, he made himself available on a Saturday to install it. He showed up on time, did an excellent job, finished in just a few hours, and cleaned up afterward. I hope to use him again when we remodel our bathroom.

Steve did a great job at installing a very difficult "lantern" style tile in the kitchen that needed many difficult to make cuts. Tile went from countertop to cabinets, or to ceiling in one area. Steve was reliable and communicated his status consistently, and completed the job quickly. He also kept the job area clean and neat, and did his tile cuts outside of the house which was much appreciated.

My wife and I are extremely happy with the backsplash that was installed in our kitchen. Michael and Vincent are true professionals who listened and gave us exactly what we were looking for. The quality of their work and attention to detail was evident from the finished product. They made sure the patterned tiles lined up perfectly while paying special attention to the tile over the oven since it was the main focal point. Anyway, we can’t recommend them enough for your next project.

I highly recommend Capito Contracting to anyone looking for high quality work at a reasonable price. Mike and team are professionals, take pride in their work, and ensure the customer is satisfied. They were very meticulous as if working on their own home and ensured to maintain a clean workspace throughout the project. They tiled my 3 bathrooms, installed a ceiling fan (14 ft), light fixture (12 ft), electrical receptacles, and installed baseboards. I look forward to future projects.

We had David rip out our 27 year old shower and install a new, modern, tiled shower enclosure. The results were beautiful. We also had him rip out the old lightbox and install new lights, rip out the old vanity and install a new one, and then texture and paint the new drywall. It was all done very well. David was always punctual and conscientious, and worked long days to get our job done as quickly as possible. It looks great, at a fraction of the cost of what Home Depot or similar businesses charge.

We hired Zac to install tile for two showers in our house. Zac was a great communicator. He showed up on time and stuck to his time lines even with unexpected things came up. He was always calm and positive. He showed a lot of respect to our home and our family during the work. There were some concerns : 1) he had to redo the grout on one shower because his assistant did a poor initial job, 2) various tile cuts and grout lines aren't exactly even or consistent in width, and 3) he neglected to install a shower cartridge which resulted in a plumber being called to fix it. This was our first major home project so I'm not confident in the value (better quality might have cost a little more or a lot more).

Alex did an excellent job installing our kitchen backsplash. It was an intricate tile and Alex did a very nice job paying close attention to every detail. He even helped reset a new window strip that had to be cut to the new trim. Very passionate about his trade, professional and delivers a great end result. We hope to use Alex on another project soon.

David McArthur is reliable, responsive and professional. He provides a very reasonable price for tile installation. He and his helper did a great job and they were very friendly and completed the work in time as promised. My front patio now looks exactly as I hoped (see photo)! I would highly recommend him to anyone and we will continue to hire him for more projects around our house.

I originally contacted another contractor here in TT, but George replied to me right away and he stopped by the next morning to give me a quote. George gave me a detailed work-flow and how things would work, he knew his stuff. He gave me a quote on the spot, and never deviated from it. 100% no games. It’s hard to find good and honest quality work. I had other quotes as well, and even though George was maybe 10%-15% more, I still went with his team and I’m glad I did, the workmanship speaks for itself. George being the main honcho did not mean he was laid back, he did a lot of the work as well. I initially hired him to do the tile on the shower and floor but I asked him to do a custom side tile to cover the tub. Then I hired him to install the shower door, and lastly because everything was going so well, he ended doing the rest of the bathroom. Painted, installed the new vanity, plumbing, hung accessories, also did a crown molding. His team, Art and Demo are super chill guys, and I felt very comfortable having them in and out throughout the entire project, I even gave them the garage opener, and they’re also bonded/insured. Don’t hesitate and just ask for a quote.
