What's the best flooring for basements, kitchens and bathrooms?

When installing flooring in your home, keep in mind that some materials are better suited for certain rooms while others are not. Use this guide to help you make the best decision for your home.

Best Flooring for Basements

Basement flooring should be highly resistant to moisture, as many basements are below grade. Choosing the best flooring for basement spaces depends on what they’ll be used for. For example:

  • An epoxy basement floor is a durable finish for concrete.
  • Vinyl basement flooring is generally waterproof or water-resistant.
  • Laminate floors can be an affordable option, but they’re often not 100% waterproof.
  • Ceramic tile floors are also water-resistant.

If your basement isn’t moist, carpet tiles are also an option — just make sure to use a moisture barrier.

Best Flooring for Kitchens

Kitchen flooring does more work than almost any floor in the house, so you’ll want to choose a durable floor. The following are among the best flooring types for kitchens:

  • Porcelain tiles can be fashionable, moisture-resistant, and cost less than stone or wood to install.
  • Vinyl flooring can withstand dents, is generally inexpensive and it’s easy to install.
  • Linoleum flooring can be durable, easy to maintain and affordable.
  • Wood flooring could be damaged by dropped pots and pans, furniture and pets. However, hardwood and engineered wood floors in kitchen spaces are still popular among homeowners.

Best Flooring for Bathrooms

Bathroom flooring must withstand high moisture levels while also being comfortable on bare feet. Here are some of the best flooring options for bathrooms:

  • Porcelain tiles are generally comfortable, waterproof, stylish and less costly than stone or wood.
  • Vinyl flooring is waterproof, cost-effective and can imitate wood convincingly.
  • Natural stone can be expensive, but it’s typically hard and durable.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

The national average cost to install flooring is $5,500, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 . Your cost can be much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select, the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed.

Here are some examples of floor installation costs, depending on the material:

Is it worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist?

Unless you have plenty of experience installing the type of floor you want, it is worth it to hire a professional flooring specialist.

The first reason is tools — pros have them, and they know how to use them. Without the proper experience, there is a high risk of injury with nail guns and power saws. A good pro also works quickly, saving you time that you could spend doing other things.

Finally, a pro gets you past options paralysis by helping you decide the best flooring for different rooms and areas of the home.

Dennis did a fantastic job on our bedroom flooring. With a number of pets, we needed to have our carpet ripped out and flooring put in. Dennis was extremely responsive when it came to answering my correspondence, helping us choose flooring and scheduling time to install it. The installation was quick and clean -- not a spec left behind. When we're ready to replace the flooring in another room, which at some point we'll want to do, I won't hesitate to contact Dennis to take care of it!

Matt came to do the initial consultation, quoted me a price and told me which flooring that would be best for me to purchase for my home. We picked the floors and ordered them ourselves. Also, Matt installed new baseboard as well. We are very happy with the outcome.

Luis, Patrick and the crew from Luxor Floors are some of the most professional people I've worked with on any home improvement project. Our job was to replace ~1100 sq ft of hardwood floors, a staircase and install new baseboards due to a faucet failure and subsequent water damage. Luis showed up on time to take measurements and discuss options. Their proposal was the most itemized of all the bids we received, but not the most expensive. We appreciated this attention to detail, as there were no surprises as to what was included and what was not. Once we signed the contract to start work the Luxor crew were very quick in removing the existing floors, baseboards and stairs (on the same day). They also provided a dehumidifier to ensure we did not have a mold problem. They were the only contractors that were willing to do this. Once the existing floor was removed, we discovered the sub floor was very uneven. Rather than just floor over it, Luxor floors went to great lengths to ensure it was level before putting our new floor down. This attention to detail and customer satisfaction is what sets Luxor apart from other contractors - they want to do the job well and ensure that you are happy with the finished product. In addition to the kudos I've already given, I appreciated the following: - the work crew always left the site clean at the end of the day and followed our HOA rules without a problem - Patrick and Luis were always responsive to any questions we had about the materials or job in general - no corners were cut when it came to quality If you are looking for quotes for a flooring job be sure to include Luxor Floors in your selection, you won't be disappointed.

Had laminate floors installed. I supplied the material. Job was done well and they did some nice final touches to enhance the job and finished a closet. I took one star away as the job was delayed to prioritize another job and saw dust covered everything and they could have been more aware of shutting doors or covering furniture. They worked diligently, was knowledgeable and made sure the job was complete to my satisfaction. Would hire them again.

It was a pleasure working with Michael and his team. He was very responsive and the work on our floors was excellent. We had carpet replaced with hardwood in our bedrooms and the stairs leading upstairs. We had a hiccup to to the manufacturer giving us the wrong items, but Michael was flexible in getting the right items ordered and installed. Definitely learned how to give detailed descriptions of what we want, as they helped him deliver what we had in our head 😁

H & T Flooring did a nice job but there were a few things that came up which is why I can't give them a 5-star rating. Even though they finished replacing carpet with the vinyl flooring in less than two days, my concerns which I raised a few times and from the very beginning, and which they brushed off as not an issue, ended up being a problem and not getting resolved. This was frustrating but at least they offered to come back and fix those issues when I decide to continue with remodeling of my home. I appreciate owning mistakes and offering to fix them so that increased my rating. There were a few other items in their work and communication (or lack of) that made me give them less than perfect rating. On the positive side, they also did some extra work for free. They removed old and installed new baseboards in the bathroom. This was nice of them and I really appreciate it. In summary, I would recommend them and I would re-hire them myself but not without making sure that all of my concerns are addressed and planned for. I would also push for better communication- any "off scenarios" and their solutions would need to be communicated and discussed with me first. Thank you, Mihai and the team, and I look forward to working on more projects with you in the future!
