Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a personal trainer cost near me?

Expect to pay between $35 and $90 per hour for a personal trainer near you. The length of the session, as well as the number of sessions you book in advance, will have an impact on the price. You can often get lower prices per session by booking more of them. Group training also tends to be less expensive than one-on-one training, as is going to the gym instead of having the trainer come to meet you. Trainer certification is also a factor — trainers with more certification are likely to charge more.

It's important to do your research and get cost estimates from several personal trainers near you before you hire anyone.

How often should you see a personal trainer?

How often you should see your personal trainer depends both on your budget and your fitness level. If you’re new to the exercise routine, maybe start with one to three visits per week to establish a good routine and understanding. Talk to personal trainers near you to figure out the perfect cadence for your personal training sessions.

What exactly does a personal trainer do?

A personal trainer is tasked with working with a client to achieve fitness goals. Personal trainers may take clients in a small group or do one-on-one training. Their focus is on fitness goals — muscular capacity, working on cardiovascular endurance, improving flexibility, and even recommending diet changes and at-home exercises. Personal trainers may work with clients in the gym or at their homes, depending on their preference.

How can I find a trainer?

Search for personal trainers near you online, and identify the ones with the highest ratings. Read their customer testimonials, and look at customers’ before-and-after photos (if available). It’s also important to find out whether the trainers sought professional training and certification, if they can adhere to your schedule and if they can train you at a location that works for both of you.

Finally, contact several trainers for cost estimates. This way, you can hire a trainer who not only provides great services but also fits within your budget.

Is it worth getting a personal trainer?

If you have fitness goals that you’re having trouble accomplishing on your own, hiring a personal trainer can be worth the money. People rarely regret getting in shape — even if it costs money. Personal trainers create accountability, as you’ll have to confess to them if you don’t stick to your training schedule. They’re trained to push you just hard enough, and they take your body type and goals into account when creating a fitness plan.

Is kickboxing good exercise?

Kickboxing is great exercise. It works your whole body and really gets your heart pounding. Kickboxing combines upper- and lower-body movements like roundhouse kicks and uppercut punches that boost calorie burning. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how much exercise you get. Kickboxing training that takes place in a martial arts studio will involve kicking and punching a sandbag or sparring with a competitor, both of which will sharply increase the amount of exercise you’ll experience in a kickboxing session.

Comparatively, a study by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) found that women doing group fitness cardio kickboxing burned between 6.45 and 8.3 calories per minute, or approximately 350-450 calories burned during an hour-long class. This is roughly what you can expect to burn with jogging or similar exercise, but ACE says that cardio kickboxing offers the added benefits of increased strength and flexibility, sharper reflexes, and improved coordination. Whether you’re training to fight competitively, learning kickboxing as a form of self-defense, or taking cardio kickboxing at your local gym, you’ll get a full-body workout with positive health benefits.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.

This review is strictly about the customer service at Core Progression; especially the owner, Jon. I signed up for personal training sessions and unfortunately, I was injured halfway into my contract. After receiving a physicians release from any physical activity and/or training; the owner refused to refund my purchases of personal training sessions. Jon was very unprofessional and showed lack of sympathy for my injury. He stopped responding to my emails and pawned my emails off to a trainer. Core Progression DID let me out of my contract, but pocketed $750 of my money that was purchase towards sessions. I would understand if it stated in the contact "no refunds, all sales are final" -- however; there was not. Very disappointed in Core Progression, and how I was treated as a client . I do not recommend this business to anyone that values customer service.

Had a GREAT experience with Obstacle Destruction. Chad Johnson was so easy to work with and my trainer Evan was awesome. Evan created workouts that were tough and hard but not over the top. He is patient but also requires that you show up with the attitude to get the most out of the session. I had so much fun and had a serious workout every time. 10 sessions in and I am hooked. I'll be signing up for another round ofr personal training!

My husband and I started training with Mike in January with the ultimate goal of getting in shape and toning for our wedding in July. On our wedding day, I was the most confident I have been with my body in for as long as I can remember. Mike's workouts are great. He really listens to your goals and develops customized plans to help you get there. For me it was all about the arms for the wedding dress and I was very happy with how my arms looked on the big day. Prior to Mike, I had been bottoming out on too much cardio and not enough strength training. I was working out 4-7 times a week and wasn't getting the results I felt I deserved based on the amount of time I was putting in. Mike changed that and I finally got the definition I had been looking for. We started having Mike cook for us in May when we started to get busier with wedding tasks & were traveling every two weeks. Mike's meals were delicious and I'm so glad that I got to learn from his healthy cooking example. He is a registered dietician in addition to his personal training license, it doesn't get much better than that people! Additionally, we love Mike because he is a real person! We have met trainers at big gyms that don't understand a life outside of the gym. Mike gets it. He knows you aren't going to eat perfect on vacation and gives you tips on how not to overindulge or healthy alternatives. He helps you work through these challenges as opposed to making you feel like a failure when you make bad choices. Last thing about Mike. He is just a really good guy. He is about as honest and genuine as they come. He puts his whole heart into it and he truly cares about his clients. We would highly recommend him to anyone who is in search of a personal trainer!

This was my first time getting a personal trainer and I must say I was satisfied with who I hired. I learned a lot form Jerome. I liked that he was knowledgeable about the exercises he instructed with me. Any questions I had about anything about my sessions, certain exercise or anything else, he responded with elaborated detail and was clear for me to understand. I enjoyed every session I had with him. It was fun and exciting. I was always excited to wake up sore the next day and I would tell him about it. Waking up sore means progress and that I had an effective workout. I hired Jerome for 90 days, 2 days a week and got close to my workout goals than if I would of done it alone. If I would of kept on, I would of got to my goals. With the amount of time and days spent with Jerome training me, I'm just glad that he at least helped me get halfway where I wanted to be. I took home a lot of exercises that I learned from him and incorporate them into my workouts. I now have more knowledge of weight training, how to effectivly workout my abs, how to and when to stretch the right way, and learned about high intensity cardio. Overall, I got my money worth, I got results, got educated, and most of all had fun. I would highly recommend Jerome. I plan on hiring him again for a another round!

I have been training with Mike for almost 3 years now and I highly, highly recommend him. It has literally changed my life. When I started with Mike I was overweight, in pain, on blood pressure medication and embarrassed to work out. Mike immediately put me as ease, and tailored the workouts to start with what I was able to do. The workouts were varied, fun, safe, and effective, and as my capabilities increased, he increased the workouts along with me, and I kept progressing. As a registered dietician as well as a personal trainer, he helped me with nutritional guidance at the same time, and helped me to face some long-standing food-addiction behaviors. I lost 75 pounds, am no longer on blood pressure medication, all my bloodwork has returned to normal, and my % body fat is now half what it used to be. I could not have done it without Mike. I know, because I had tried many times before. But it doesn’t stop there… being able to maintain this new me was the next phase, and it was a whole new territory for me. Mike helped me navigate this new territory - nutritionally, mentally, and in the workouts. Having successfully maintained my weight loss for a year and a half, I am sticking with Mike in what I like to call “phase 3”… now trying to push myself further, reach for other non-weight-related strength and body composition goals… and seeing what my body is capable of doing. The old self-hating depressed me is gone... I am now confident, enjoy life, and excited for what is to come. It’s hard work, but Mike is very supportive, positive, and focuses on your achievements and improvements. He goes the extra mile to help his clients become the best they want to be. He’s not an in-your-face intimidating gym boot-camp guy. He’s a knowledgeable, professional, and supportive trainer, dietician, and all-around good person, who will guide you in this journey where there are no shortcuts.
