Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to build a deck?

The cost of building a new deck or porch is $1,500. However, this price can vary depending on a few different factors. The square footage of the space, the type of materials to be used, the intricacy of the project and your specific region can cause the price to fluctuate. To find out how much your new deck will cost, get free estimates from the best deck contractors near you.

Does a deck increase home value?

A back deck may (or may not) increase your home’s value or attract potential buyers if you’re looking to sell. According to the Remodeling Impact Report: Outdoor Features, a new wood deck with an estimated construction cost of $10,000 recovered $8,000 for the overall recovery of 80%. Still, 9% of realtors suggested that home sellers should add a new wood deck before putting their home on the market, and 4% said this project has helped closed deals.

The impact of adding a new deck will likely depend on its material (wood, composite, etc.) and where you live. For example, if you live in an area where people rarely spend time outside because of the weather, it’s reasonable to predict that prospective home buyers might not rate a deck highly on their list of must-haves when looking for a new home.

When in doubt, consult with your realtor or a real estate expert to figure out if adding a new deck to your home is the right move to increase your home’s value. If it is, contact the best deck contractors near you to get free estimates and start planning your project.

Is it hard to build a deck yourself?

If you don’t have the skills, experience and qualifications, building a deck may be difficult for you to do on your own.

Structural integrity is key when constructing anything, but especially something you plan to have your family and friends use regularly. The safety of the structure takes careful planning and experience.

Professional contractors have the knowledge to make a safe, beautiful deck for you. They also know the proper permits and insurance required to legally build a new deck or remodel a porch in your city.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up a consultation or appointment with a general contractor during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by performing an online search for local professionals near you.

Message the contractor, and see if they are willing to set up a video consultation call instead of an in-person site visit. With video chat, the contractor may be able to assess the scale of the project, give you better information on what needs to be done and perhaps provide an estimate. Be sure to discuss virtual payments, as well as general strategies for staying safe.

What should I ask a deck contractor?

One of the first questions you should ask is whether the contractor has the proper license or insurance. To be a licensed contractor in many states, they must have the experience and knowledge to pass the requirements from your state’s licensing board.

You should also inquire if they have done work related to your specific project. Just because they’re a contractor, that doesn’t mean they’ve built a deck or an addition like yours. Ask for photographs of decks they've built in the past, and go online to read reviews from past clients.

You also need to ask for a free estimate from several contractors so you know how much the project will cost you (and so you can pay the best price).

Can I use digital payments to pay for general contractor services?

Currently, many general contractors are using common digital payment services like PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash, Zelle, Google Pay and more. And more will likely adopt these and similar platforms as coronavirus continues to force companies to take on digital capabilities.

Contact general contractors beforehand to discuss whether they accept digital payments, and take all necessary measures to meet social distancing recommendations. You can also compare general contractors side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Hot mess. Said he knew how to stain a deck and these photos are what it looked like after the first attempt. I called them to fix and then so second attempt, they basically painted it semi-transparent stain and said that they couldn’t use the transparent or fix it because the deck was made from cheap wood used for siding houses! What? No, this was a brand new cedar deck constructed from cedar decking from a lumber yard specifically for cedar deck building. I’ve also included pics of what if looked like before. Now it’s essentially “painted” semi transparent and looks cheap and I am having to have someone else come out and try to salvage it. In the meantime there’s a giant outdoor area rug on it to canvas the awful job this guy did. I’m so disappointed. I always wanted this cedar deck and now it’s ruined. Lesson learned to use a professional not these contractors on here.

We couldn’t be happier with the experience we had working with Civil Construction Solutions! The deck looks great and the construction is solid. For as big of a deck as we built, the cost was very reasonable. Miguel and his partner worked hard to make sure everything came together so well. It was difficult to find the right materials, but they went the extra mile to find them. They made great suggestions about the design of the deck and pergola. And they were generous to make it just how we liked it at the end. They are also great people! We would happily work with them again.

I had my deck restained yesterday. Randy and his crew were excellent. Even making a suggestion about the stain which was very helpful. He had four guys working on the deck, they all got a long and joked with each other. They did an excellent job. I would hire again in an instant. Great company.

Absolutely phenomenal to work with!! We had a million questions but it never phased Luke and Scott. They were patient to explain things to us. They demo’d our wasp-infested, not-to-code old deck and completed a beautiful, up to code deck. Their insight on design is impeccable and they worked great with the city permit inspectors. They communicated very well and have immense subject matter expertise and attention to detail. Recommend them 100%.

My deck in Aurora needed major repairs. Dave was extremely nice and very reasonable. He lifted a sagging portion of my large deck by 6 inches, added reinforcements, and fixed the stairwell. I was flexible with my days/times but he was able to get over to work on it for a couple of days within 2 weeks. Very satisfied and will definitely use Dave again should I need any further repairs!

Selling my house and had a contractor bail on me a week before it hit the market. My deck was weather worn and needed a paint job. I reached out to everyone but no one had any immediate openings. Then I heard from Alex at Sterling Exteriors. He said he could move some things on his schedule and would have it done by the weekend. This was Thursday! Sure enough he showed up the next day power washed the deck and painters were there Saturday. They worked hard all day in the sun and got it done. Fantastic customer service! You don’t find too many people like Alex these days. Hardworking , true to his word, and super polite. Highly recommend Sterling Exteriors! Thank you to their crew!

David is great! It's very comforting as a homeowner to finally find a contractor who is both affordable and does quality work. He is very willing to work with customers on how to achieve the desired end results. His professionalism is only exceeded by his versatility. We are so happy with how he has been repairing our deck that we are discussing other projects with him. These other projects include installing a door in our garage and finishing our basement. David is such a rare find in the Aurora, CO area. I definitely recommend hiring him.

I just had my deck , patio slab, and sliding patio doors project done through Red Earth Construction. Family team of Jim, Jason, and Jim Sr. I would use them again. I'm very cautious of who I would use as I have terrible experiences working with contractors in the past, losing money and having uncompleted poor projects.. Each time I have learned what not to do, but having met Jim who I went through the process was great. You get a sense of trust and confidence working with him. I had a budget and I did get other quotes but they came in with the best quote including with the 2 patio doors (custom done through Sunrise). The deck and patio slab took a full week to get done, and sliding doors were put in after. All of their crews that did the specific projects did a beautiful job, I was most impressed with Jerry their window/door installer. They did and great job retro fitting the beautiful sliding patio doors with the blinds . Meticulous on housekeeping , and detail . I will go through Red Earth Construction again on different home projects that can do. The family are all great, professional and easy to work with.

Pros: Work quality seems to be well done. We extended our porch with a Trex Deck and added a Pergola. All of the work looks nice. Cons: At one point, they said that the price of wood went up and that my bid would increase by $600 even though the contract says the estimate was good for 30 days and I approved it about a week or so later. Well within the 30 days. They did come back and honor the original bid. I needed to submit renderings to my HOA and received those too late for them to start at the agreed upon date. Lastly, the finishing touches/clean up was not great. Too much dirt left in my grass that I had to move after the job was complete. I will now have to go out and hire someone to adjust my sprinklers. Maybe that’s a communication thing but I felt that was part of the original bid.
