Very friendly, on time, professional and did an awesome job installing a pre-built vanity with separate granite top in exchange for a pedestal sink. Very thorough, making sure there were no leaks and worked hard adding copper piping to extend from basement. I would definitely hire him again!

Needed tile done in my basement for a remodel underway and wanting to find someone that was not only able to help with that but other projects in the house. Forrest quickly proved that he was the man for this. He was always quick to respond and his team as well. They all did quality work for me and I'm pleased with quality of work. I'll be hiring him some more as more projects emerged. Even recommended him to some family members as well.

Daniel and his team helped my wife and I transform a house built in 1906 into a modern masterpiece. They did an UNBELIEVABLE job at a very reasonable price. At first, I was a little hesitant to use them as one reviewer perviously gave them a wretched review, but I couldnt be happier with the end-results. They completely remodeled the basement, added 2 bathrooms, re-did another bathroom, dry walled multiple rooms, built an amazing egress window well, installed a water heater, sewer ejector pump, kitchenette, and laid tile/ flooring throughout the house. Separately, on a personal level Daniel and his crew are some of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE FENCE ABOUT USING DANIEL AND HIS CREW DONT BE....FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME AND ID BE HAPPY TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK. This certainly wont be the last time we use him. We recently suffered water damage from a leaky refrigerator and the June storms and needed a contractor to repair the damage to our basement. I had a difficult time finding someone to complete the work...until I found Anaid Enterprises! LeRoy contacted me immediately to schedule an estimate. He showed up promptly for the estimate and had a detailed estimate to me in less than 24 hours. After a previous bad contractor experience I was a little nervous about hiring someone else. LeRoy laid all my fears to rest. He took care of my house as though it was his own. He provided me step by step updates and communicated with me the whole time. I appreciated the attention to detail and his commitment to the job. He was fully present from beginning to end. I am so happy to have such a genuine, detail-oriented, honest, competent, professional contractor in our community. I recommend Anaid Enterprises to anyone looking to have quality work done on your home.

Matt "Big Red" did a fantastic job! He promptly came out to bid the job, gave us a fair price and then was able to start the job the next day. He tiled two back splashes for me, he did quality work and was creative with the tile project when given autonomy when I had to leave the house for the day. Matt also did some painting and drywall repair on my basement. He worked hard, completed the job efficiently. He helped me with sawing a countertop, bringing in his table saw and didn't charge me anything. I would highly recommend Big Red Innovations for your construction needs. He is also very friendly and trustworthy, I felt totally at ease when I had to leave him alone in my home while I was out for the day. A+++

Mike (owner) and Everette did an outstanding job on my basement frame out. Mike gave me a very great price up front and was able to complete the project quickly but had great attention to detail as well. I would definitely recommend them for anyone looking for assistance on a basement finish. I believe they went above expectations as as I had furniture, and stuff in the way, but they willingly moved stuff on their own to complete the project and cleaned up not only their mess, but my mess as well. 5 Stars.

I worked with Bryan for about 6 months. In that time we completed condo renovation, basement finishing, crown install, baseboard install, door install and building/installing units. Bryan is fantastic, diligent, punctual and detail oriented. He is the best I’ve ever worked with at installing crown moulding and baseboard. I would highly recommend him for door installs also.

Brett, and team, completely renovated my old (1942) basement including new floors, drywall ceiling, lighting, painting, tile work, and much more. The attached pictures show the high quality of their work, but that is just the surface. Brett is unlike any other contractor I've met. He is extremely professional, quick in communication, always has a positive attitude, and was a joy to work with. Brett was full of recommendations and advice, and made this project feel like a partnership instead of a burden on my shoulders. I highly recommend Brett as a partner for any home renovation project you are looking to tackle.

Daniel was an excellent carpenter and did great work on our basement framing. His price was very fair and he was able to frame our 1,000 sq ft basement in about 2 1/2 days. I would HIGHLY recommend him to anyone and have shared his information with a neighbor and two friends already.

Cannot say enough great things about Scott and his colleague! They were professional, had great ideas and actually cleaned up the mess created from their work! We are in the process of finishing our basement (hence wanting to cut the window wells) and our general contractor was so impressed with Scott that he asked for his information to use him in the future. This is probably way more of a testament to his workmanship than my layperson’s opinion. :)

Edward did an excellent job with the project my fiancé and I hired him for. Edward was responsive and upfront with my fiancé from the very beginning. He listened to exactly what we needed. We needed to turn a basement living room into a master bedroom with a closet as well as texture the remodeled master bathroom. Edward did great work with the metal framing; did great work with the drywalling, mudding, and texturing as well. I have nothing but great things to say about Edward. We have had a lot of bad experiences with contractors throughout our remodel and Edward’s professionalism restored our faith that there are good contractors out there. We would recommend his services to anyone.

Overall, I have to say Curtis is excellent at what he does. He's professional, prompt, courteous, very knowledgeable, and knows and works with other very good professionals when needed. He is also very easy to work with. I initially hired Curtis to redo a bedroom in the basement, which involved putting in an egress window, and to replace a couple of light fixtures in other rooms. Although we basically knew what we wanted done, he made really good suggestions on how to do things to make everything look the best.We are extremely satisfied with the work he did, and others that have seen how the room looks now, all say he did a great job. While he was working here, I did add a number of smaller jobs that I needed to have done, which he did with no problem. I would highly recommend Curtis, and I will definitely be hiring him again to make the rest of my house look as good as the room he has done.

We hired LSE Builders to finish our existing basement. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about Steven the owner and Chris the project manager, as well as all the suppliers and contractors they work with. To start with, the whole process was very transparent and they use technology effectively in order to share all the bids, invoices, and receipts. Secondly, they performed amazingly well given our aggressive timeframe. Even with delays from the city, they finished the entire project in well under 3 months as promised. This is especially impressive given the very busy time contractors are having right now in the Boulder area. The finished product includes two additional bedrooms, a rec room, and a full bathroom. The finishing touches, in particular, turned out very well… the tile work, the carpentry, the lighting, etc. The project went very well and exceeded our expectations. Steven and Chris were both very professional and never hesitated to address any concerns we had. We highly recommend LSE!

Kevin and Christina were great to work with. They listened to what we wanted, worked with us to create the plan, and delivered a brand new deck in-time and on budget. We could not be more pleased with the work that Colorado Barns, Basements and Decks did for us.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
