Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

To find out how much it will cost to repair your appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

To help you determine if your fridge should be repaired or replaced, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians in your area.

How much does refrigerator repair cost?

Refrigerator repair generally costs a fraction of the price of a new fridge and shouldhave your appliance up and running again in no time. The problems your refrigerator is experiencing and the parts required to fix it will affect your repair costs. Where you live can affect labor rates, which will raise or lower your costs. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Diagnostic fees: $50-$100. Repair pros often have a service call fee or diagnostic fee to account for their time traveling to your location with all their tools to assess the problem. If you choose to have them repair the fridge, most pros then credit this fee toward your repair cost.
  • Parts: $20-$500. A new compressor averages $200, an icemaker $300, and computerized components such as touch screens and control boards average $300 or more.
  • Basic repairs: $180-$400, including parts. This price range can include repairing the evaporator or fan motor.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

How can I find out if an appliance repairman or specialist is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

The definition of an essential provider varies based on state, city and local guidelines. Visit the official government website of your state or city to see which services are considered an essential in your area.

For more information on a national level, read CISA’s publication on critical infrastructure workers. However, note that not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an appliance specialist during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation or appointment during the COVID-19 pandemic is virtually, with no in-person contact. After messaging the appliance repairman, you can ask to set up a video chat or phone call to discuss what work needs to be done. Make sure to ask them how they handle payments, keeping in mind that paying in advance may be safer than handling cash or credit cards until the pandemic is over. Ask the professional what procedures and precautions they have in place to ensure safety during this time.

Do appliance repairmen or specialists offer remote or virtual services?

You should contact appliance repairmen and specialists near you before hiring them for the project to see if they can offer their services remotely or virtually. Appliance repairs are typically done in person, but you can ask if it's possible to have a virtual consultation or an online walk-through. If you see that a pro is offering remote services in their profile, message them to find out what those services include.

My fridge ended up needing to be replaced rather than repaired, however Patrick showed the utmost in service and integrity. When it turned out that a repair wasn't possible, I had to convince him to even accept payment for the initial assessment to which he was entitled. I'll be using Foothills Appliance and Repair in the future for the top- notch commitment integrity.

Travis was able to perform a same-day repair with OEM parts on my LG washer/dryer. He was very knowledgeable and does his best to keep as many commonly needed parts on hand as possible. He will be my first call the next time I need an appliance repaired.

Denver Metro Appliance, Chauncey was able to take out/dispose old washer & dryer unit & bring newer washer/dryer unit from garage and hook up/install for price far better than my previous appliance people that I've used for all my appliance needs in the past. I also had to have a part ordered and he returned again to get washer working. The part didn't work; explained of possibility that if part didn't, looking at something major on an old unit to fix. Chauncey's willing to help with disposal and delivery of another washer at more than fair price, if I can find one. He also gave me the name of a place to call that has some like the ones I have; Whirlpool brand. Thevprices are fair, availability, communication, they do deliveries, installs, and repairs, others just did repairs; thus, my new Appliance/person to go to in my contacts for all future appliance needs.

I spoke to Donald yesterday and Dominic came out first thing this morning. We moved here over the weekend and realized we’d need a professional to convert our dryer from propane to natural gas. Dominic was friendly and professional and left us with everything in order. Great service and we will call Thin Air Appliance next time we need an appliance repaired!

We are not done with our repairs yet as we had to order a part. But we were given the option to not get a repair and buy new, etc. We decided to repair it because of the lower cost. Our repairman was very kind and worked efficiently and explained our problem as he went along and showed us as well. We have confidence he will be able to fix our appliance.

Kudos to Emerald Home Services and extra kudos to Patrick. Patrick is a professional technical expert. He repaired a 1962 GE Americana Range that had an oven problem. We were concerned because of its age that the oven would not be repairable. Most appliance repair businesses do not repair old appliances at all, but Emerald and Patrick saved the day! The cost for repairing our oven exceeded our expectations. Patrick made 3 trips and in the end the cost for the entire repair was extremely fair, reasonable and far less than we expected. That coupled with the excellent service makes it a no-brainer. Emerald Home Services and Patrick are a home run for us. This stove/range was especially challenging. Patrick leaped in and got the job done and again exceeded all our expectations. He did not leave our home until he had everything completely put back together and working great. He is a stickler regarding that. Patrick discovered some stove pieces had previously been put together wrong and he made those corrections. We do not know the history of the stove, but we purchased it in August of this year --not knowing the lower oven could not be turned on. He had to order parts out of Dallas which was critical as the parts availlable for this stove are limited. Patrick is also personable with a delightful sense of humor. He makes appliance repair a breeze for the home owner (ugh for us who dread the whole ordeal because it is so hard to find the right person to do the job well!). We decided that from here on Patrick will be our "go to guy" for all our elecitrical/appliance repair needs. Thank you Emerald and Patrick!

My tenant called me with concerns about the dryer in our rental house. I posted a job on Thumbtack and Chauncey from Denver Metro Appliance Repair responded within minutes. I called him and he was at our rental only three hours later. His price was good, and his responsiveness and professionalism was better. He cleared our problem and alleviated my tenants' concern. I highly recommend you call them when in need of dryer repairs!

Showed up on time and quickly diagnosed the problem. Discussed the pros /cons of ordering a new part VS buying a new dishwasher, since the past was pricey. I decided to go with ordering a new part. Returned on time again. Showed me the corrosion on the broken part and quickly and efficiently installed the new one. Would definitely hire again for appliance repair.

I had a great experience with Denver Metro Appliance. Chauncey was quick to respond, genuine, and great with communication throughout my project. He diagnosed the issue with my dryer, located a replacement part and completed an estimate to repair, then gave his recommendation that it would be cheaper/more efficient to just replace it. He also returned to install my replacement, and was so flexible working with my own work schedule to make it happen. Will definitely use them again!

Made an appointment with Eric for appliance repair between 10am-12am. He didn't show up. I called him at 12:30 and got voicemail asking him what went wrong and to call me back....nothing. Called again at 4pm and got voicemail again, left second message. Still haven't heard from him (next day). Unreliable, undependable, and very rude thing to do. Not a good way to run any business. Beware.

Could not repair my Sub Zero Refrigerator. More than 5 service tries, turns out the technician removed a bracket and replaced it in ...backwards, which prevented the ice maker from working. They just stopped trying, left us hanging, so we hired American Appliance (Certified Sub-Zero Provider), and they were able to diagnose and repair the issue. Unfortunately for us, we have no idea if we really needed the repairs that Thin Air did or not. They stopped responding. Said they had urgent A/C jobs to attend to. Told us people were dying. I had good luck with them before, and Dominic tried hard, but in the end...I ended up having to pay twice to cover their work. Expensive mistake. Hire a Certified Sub Zero repair firm. They have the Software to diagnose, where Thin Air had to manually enter codes...and it was hit and miss. All I know is when they repaired our front dispenser for water and ice, the Ice Maker which was working, Stopped working. They could never get it working again!

The #1 thing I care about when hiring a repair person is honesty, and Patrick seems to be as honest as they come. My tenants reported some horrific noises coming from the dryer, and Patrick showed up to take a look -- and then the noises miraculously stopped happening. Patrick didn't invent any repairs, took a good look through the dryer for any issues, and just charged us a very reasonable amount for the inspection and his travel time. He took down the model number and said that he'll be ready if the problem recurs. He easily could have taken advantage of the situation, but didn't. He'll be my first phone call next time our dryer -- or any other appliance -- starts quacking.

Refrigerator stopped working in January. referred me to Horizon Appliance and HVAC. Travis was 2 hours late after his time slot. Called us while he was already late to inform us he was having lunch. Travis diagnosed a bad evaporator on our fridge. Ordered the part and installed it. Repair did not work. Travis came back and did the thing where he began blaming a prior repair (he said the wrong refrigerant was installed on the fridge. In the past decade we have lived in the house, the fridge has faithfully worked without a single repair) He changed the refrigerant. Repair did not work. Travis came back. He gave it the old college try. At this point, I knew the repair would not work and I was right. After the three attempts, Travis has not returned our phone calls. Once in a while someone answers and tells us that she would deliver the message to Travis. Travis does not answer. Here we are $1529.24 in the hole and Travis keeps ghosting. Should have dug a little deeper. hindsight in 20/20. Half his reviewers in Google and Yelp are in the same boat. I am really just trying to help the next sucker that hires this guy. Please avoid.
