Recently Sherman and his team replaced the roof on our house. From start to finish he was extremely professional, hard working and thus provided a great value for our project. I contacted many roofers for estimates and Sherman provided the most thorough explanation of the work he would do and how it would be done. He delivered on everything as promised. It was a pleasure having him work on our house. I would highly recommend him for your roofing needs.

We needed a roofer before the weather really changed. We looked around and on Thumbtack saw James and different roofers. When talking to James, you could see and feel the honesty. He listened to what I told him I needed and did it. He was prompt and timely in coming out to view the roof and to repair it. His price was reasonable and he was very professional. I would highly recommend him!

Abott construction was hired to do 2 projects: 1) repointing of chimney w/ chimney cap installation and 2) roof leak repair Mark of Abott Construction was very quick with his corresondence. He is there when he says he will be there, even if it was freezing cold he was working up on the roof! He was the only roofer/contractor who suggested trying to repair the leak or save the roof first before replacing. He is trying his best to buy us a couple of years before spending the big money that a whole roof replacement will cost. Mark asked me to go on the roof with him so he can show me what he had done to the chimney and roof and we did a water test to check for garage roof leak. We ran the water from the hose for a good 15mins and it passed the leak test! No water leaking in the garage! The following day we got a verybad rain, it was raining non stop for 24hrs. Unfortunately after a good 3hours of heavy rain the garage started leaking again, Mark is trying his best to save the roof, he said he will try 1 more time to seal more of the shingles and see what that does,we are still awaiting a decent non snowy/rain/freezing weather conditions for him to try 1 last time. Fair pricing, fast correspondence, easy to talk to and dependable( will be there at your house if he says he will be there) job is finished on the amount of days he said it will take the job to be finished.

Stan with Hard Hatters roofing was fantastic. The new roof took only a few days to install, and he did a few other odds jobs to help us wrap up the exterior of our home. He was very professional and accommodating. We also have small children and he was great about cleaning up roofing nails/debris in the yard every day. The finished product looks amazing and he also gave us a nice portfolio with the warranty information. We were thrilled with his work and would recommend him.

I called Philadelphia City Roofers because I had a leak in my attic and the water was seeping into my bedroom. I was super stressed about it because I did not have a large budget and I had a horrible experience with another company that did a terrible job and overcharged me. These guys did an amazing job. They came out that day and put my mind at ease. They were very fairly priced and were done within a couple of hours. I am so glad I trusted my gut and went with them.

Four seasons temporarily managed 3 rental properties for me while I was in London on business. My tenants in one unit experienced a roof failure that resulted in a great deal of drywall damage to the second and first floor. Four seasons was on site within an hour. They tarped the roof, and the following day effected a repair to the roof, and had the drywall removed, interior of walls treated and drywall rehung, taped and painted all within the next two days. Their quick reaction saved me from further damage, and future mold issues. They have since done several repairs on other properties and I have had no further complaints from my tenants. They are always quick to respond. A great asset to any property owner.

I had appointments with 3 other roofers, one did not show up at all, the two others had quotes for repair work far higher for less work than HomeSite Remodeling. HomeSite initially came to my house within a day of contacting them and in the same day had a firm quote for the repair work. They came to do the repair work as scheduled and finished it the same day, the work was well done and professional.

I had a bad leak in my roof with much rain in the forecast. I was not familiar with Beatttie Roofing but after about 15 calls to other roofers, Alex Beattie of Beattie Roofing called me right back. He came out that evening and inspected the roof, told me why it was leaking, and what was going to be done to fix it. The next morning he and his crew fixed it. I'm happtwith the repair and he stuck to the price. I hooked itbis awhile before I need Beatie's services but he will be my first call next time.

I received quotes from four different roofers and performance exteriors was by far the best value. The owner was extremely responsive and picked up the phone whenever I had a question. He was communicative and always gave specific direction about the plan. The process was extremely efficient and transparent - I came home from work and had a new roof and there was no other evidence that the work had been done aside from the final product. Everything was cleaned up and the final product looked great! If you need any work done professionally and on budget, this is your best choice!

Rob promptly responded to my request for an onsite inspection and estimate, which he provided in writing. He is very knowledgeable about roofing, and took the time to explain everything to me step-by-step; he explained the likely causes of my leak as well as the best course of action to correct it. Additionally, he looked at another project that I needed work on and bundled the two jobs together for a very reasonable price. On the scheduled start day, he showed up as agreed and equipped to complete the job; he did both jobs and I am very satisfied with the quality of his workmanship. Although I hope I have no more issues with my roof for the remainder of my time owning this house, but I would definitely use him again if needed. I highly recommend him for roofing services. J. What a great experience! My husband and I were looking for a roofer to repair our 25 year old roof in our new home. Everything was done very well and contractor was professional. We needed to have everything approved through or association and be sure everything was cleaned up properly. No complaints what so ever. I am very happy! Thanks again.

I selected MW Roofing to install my new roof after doing a lot of research and interviewing a number of roofers. I also spoke with people who had MW install their roofs. The job was done exactly as promised, with no hidden costs or other surprises. The work crew was first rate, punctual, hardworking, and thorough. I have nothing but praise for Chad and Ellie (the owners) who promptly and patiently answered every question I had. I highly recommend MW Roofing.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

      • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
        • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
      • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
      • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
      • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
      • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
      • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
        • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
