Your burning questions: answered

Is it worth it to hire a roofer?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire a professional roofer instead of attempting it yourself. The first is safety. Roofing is inherently dangerous, as a fall from a roof could seriously injure or kill you. Roofers have specialized equipment and training to help prevent accidents.

Next is experience. Roofers know how to spot problems (leaks, missing shingles, moss or mold growth, etc.)  in your roof that could potentially save you from costly repairs down the road.

And finally, roofers save you time by getting the job done quickly and with a high degree of quality.

How do I choose the best roofing contractor?

Choosing a roofer starts by reading reviews online. Compare customer ratings of roofing contractors and companies to identify pros with a good track record of craftsmanship and customer relations. Some reviews may also have photos of completed roofing jobs.

Many states require a license for someone to do roofing work, so make sure the companies you’re considered are licensed. Also, look for contractors and companies with several years of experience.

Before you make your final choice, contact several roofers near you to get free estimates and quotes. Ultimately, choose the roofer that will do high-quality work for a reasonable price.

What is the best roofing material?

The best roofing material for your home will depend on your budget and what you’re looking for. If you want a roof that has longevity, consider the following:

Asphalt Roof

Lasts 20 years

$5 per square foot

Metal Roof

Last 50 years

$10-$18 per square foot

Clay Roof

Last a lifetime

$15-$20 per square foot (for terracotta)

$20 per square foot (for Spanish clay tile)

Concrete Roof

Last a lifetime

$10 per square foot

Slate Roof

Last a lifetime

$10-$75 per square foot

Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?

Homeowners insurance generally covers roof replacement if the roof is damaged by a natural disaster or a sudden accident, according to Investopedia. However, insurance companies often won’t cover roof replacement costs if the roof is older than 20 years. Read your insurance policy to find out what types of roof repairs or damages are covered.

How long does a roof last?

A roof’s lifespan depends on two major factors: the material and how well the roof was installed. Assuming that the roof is installed properly, here’s how long different roofing materials should last:

  • Asphalt shingle roof: 20 years
  • Metal roof: 50 years
  • Slate roof: 100+ years (lifetime)
  • Clay roof: Lifetime
  • Concrete roof: Lifetime
  • Copper roof: Lifetime

How do you know when you need a new roof?

Some of the signs that indicate you need a new roof include cupping, warping and peeling asphalt shingles, as well as cracks on certain shingles. Other warning signs may include:

  • Leakage
  • Exposed nails
  • Missing granules
  • Droopy, sagging roof
  • Moss, mold or fungi growth

A metal roof may need to be replaced when it grows rusty and begins leaking. Tile roofs made of clay, slate or concrete need repairs when cracked. Cleaning and inspecting the roof regularly can help prevent major damage from occurring.

Contact the best roofers near you to inspect, repair or replace your roof.

Do you tip roofers?

It’s not customary or required to tip roofers. This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t tip, but it is generally not expected. If you do decide to tip, you can give the tip to the foreman or distribute it yourself.

Another idea to show your appreciation is to surprise the crew with coffee, water, snacks, breakfast or lunch when they arrive at the worksite.

Does a roofer need to enter my home?

Generally, a roofer will likely not need to enter your home. The bulk of the work takes place on and around the edges of the roof, where roofing material meets either dormer walls or other structures. So, there is usually no need for person-to-person contact. However, there might be some cases where a roofer needs to enter your home, perhaps to inspect damage or access electrical outlets.

You can take care of any consultation calls using video chats, photos and emails, and payment should take place on virtual platforms. Put together a strategy with any local roofing professionals you contact.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a roofer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Because social distancing is important during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended that you message roofers after narrowing down your choices through an online search of local roofers near you.

Ask if the roofer is willing to conduct an assessment via video chat rather than a traditional site inspection. Additionally, strategize on what other steps you can collectively take to make sure you’re following guidelines on social distancing during this time, including conducting a virtual payment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for roof installation, replacement or repair?

Digital payment platforms are common among roofers, roof repair companies and other services. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely cause more service providers to adopt platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Square Cash, Venmo and others instead of cash or check to decrease the risk of transmission.

You can typically find out whether roofers accept digital payments on their online profiles, and you should confirm this information with them during a consultation call.

Power roofing did a great job. His guys are hard workers . Roof nails in the pool and rain were my only problem. I taped a mechanics magnet on a pole to retrieve the nails. Not a big deal for me as I'm in construction . Brian was great litigating the roof damage with my Insurance company . Beautiful roof

Christopher did a great job with the roof. Took him a little longer than planned, but that was due to unexpected rain. Looks good and I’m happy with the result! I would recommend him for roof repairs.

Let me begin by letting you all know I live in Atlanta, GA but the house I had re-roofed is a rental property in Orlando, FL. This complete transaction was done by telephone and e-mail. I never met anyone from Power Roofing personally and the complete transaction was done by phone and e-mail. It is with great pleasure I am able to rate this company OUTSTANDING! Bryan Thomas was extremely attentive to our needs, did exactly what he said he would do, and his communication back and forth with me was greatly appreciated. He sent me pictures of what he found during the estimate, pictures of their progress and completion. A PROFESSIONAL handling of this project from the 1st phone call and estimate! As for the company behind Bryan, when we agreed upon a start date, which was less than 2 weeks from our contract agreement, they not only met their schedule, they started a day early and completed the roofing job in the 2 days they said they would complete it. I would HIGHLY recommend Power Roofing!!!

I wanted to give proper appreciation for Nathan of Sun State Roofing. He came out to quote a small repair job for a leak around our chimney. Nathan was honest, candid, and professional in his assessment, and determined that the issue was with improper seals, rather than the shingles themselves - something which I could do myself. Despite not moving forward with the job, should my amateur repair work not hold up, then I will definitely call Sun State Roofing.

Edward was honest with his pricing. I had eight roofing tile to replace and Edward did this for me for a very aggressive price. I had another company give me a price of $800. I’ll hire Edward again.

We had them come out for a roof leak we were experiencing. He was very professional and gave us all our possible options up front. He showed us the work he was doing both before and after completing the work. The price was very reasonable and he guarantees his work.

Bryan was great he was always there when i had a question and helped with the insurance and he fixed the problems I had. I asked that on day 3 they not show up until 10am they showed up at 7. They hit my fence with the trailer. Bryan did fix it. They left a lot of trash laying around. I cleaned it but bryan would have if i had left it. He did help with the staples that needed cleaned up. My major issue was with his business partner who came out and treated us disrespectfully when we wanted to talk about the issues we had. Bryan was great the other issues were not so good. If it wasnt for him the rating would be lower. The roof looks great and so far no leaks. I might be picky but i have high expectations for the money we payed for a new roof.
