Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with a tiler during the COVID-19 pandemic, start by conducting an online search for tilers in your area. Ask if the tiler can conduct a consultation through a video call instead of a traditional site visit to limit exposure. It’s also wise to confer about the current state of the pandemic and ensure that it’s safe to complete the project now. If not, discuss postponing for another time.

How can I find out if a tiler is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To identify essential service providers during the pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website to find a list of recommendations.

A list of national recommendations can be found at CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. This service lists 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that are approved to continue operation during the pandemic. But note not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a tiler need to enter my home?

If the tiling job is located in your house, the tiler will need access to your home. The exception to this would be if the job was taking place in an outdoor area like a backyard.

If a tiler does need to enter your home, take strong precautions. Sanitize all surfaces, avoid being in the same room and conduct payment using digital platforms. Discuss a safety strategy with tilers in your area beforehand.

Can I use digital payments to pay for tile installation, replacement or repairs?

Digital payment platforms are popular in a wide range of service industries, and many tile installment, replacement and repair professionals now accept them. Common platforms include PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo, Square Cash and more.

Start with an online search for tile companies near you. Ask them if they accept digital payments and which types you can use. Then, put a strategy together to follow social distancing guidelines.

Do tilers offer remote or virtual services?

Because tiling is a manual, in-person job, it is not typically considered a remote project. But if you come across a profile that states the tile company is offering remote services, ask them what those services include.

Can you tile over drywall?

Yes, it is possible to lay tile over drywall. If you’re looking to lay a tile backsplash in your kitchen, you can certainly do it yourself — but hiring a professional may save time.

Before you tile over your drywall, make sure the wall has a smooth surface with no bumps or cracks. Start by using a compound to seal up any crevices, then sand the drywall and clean up the dust. Then, lay a coat of primer on the drywall to get it ready for your tile.

How long does it take to lay tile?

Depending on the pro’s expertise, the size of the project and its complexity, the time it takes to lay the tile will vary. For some projects, it may take a few hours to lay tile while others will require several days of work.

When planning a tiling project for your home, get free estimates from the best tile contractors near you and ask them how long it would take them to complete your job.

Can you tile over tile floors?

Yes, you can lay tile over existing tile floors (or a backsplash). Although it’s generally best to pull up your old flooring, you can simply place tiles on top if your existing floor is in good condition.

Before you start, examine your tiles carefully for mold, cracks or unevenness. Provided none of these is an issue, you can begin laying your new tiles.

But if this is your first time laying tile — or if you want to ensure that the job is done right — save time by hiring a tiling professional near you

What do you need to lay tile?

If you’re laying a new tile floor, you’ll likely need an assortment of tools and supplies, including (but not limited to):

  • Tile
  • Tile adhesive
  • Tile trim
  • Tile spacers
  • Underlayment
  • Sealer
  • Caulk
  • Level
  • Goggles
  • Gloves
  • Trowel
  • Carpenter’s square
  • Grout
  • Sponge
  • Tape measure
  • Etc.

If you don’t have all of the tools, equipment and skills necessary to lay tile in your home, consider hiring one of the best tile contractors in your area.

Byron is a very nice young man and very skilled at what he does. I've had other companies come clean my tile and grout and I was left with clean tile but the grout was still dirty. Byron went above and beyond to make sure that he got the grout clean and he did an excellent job. I highly recommend him!!!

Dragons did a wonderful job with our kitchen tile project, which was more than just a backsplash but all exposed walls. He was done in a day and half. Very efficient, professional and quote was less than the big box store's quote.

I reached out to several companies who work with tile and had the best interaction with Rodney. He was very responsible and helpful (as I didn’t have a normal request). His professional insight allowed me to have my task completed and I couldn’t be happier.

There’s a reason they are called THE BEST TILE INSTALLATION. I’m always looking for people who I can count on to help me complete projects in a timely fashion. Nagio and his staff are professional and listen to exactly what you want. I went through the exact number of day’s the project would take and he stuck to his schedule. He also went out of his way to accommodate a request that I made late into the project. I’m glad I fondly found a professional who knows tile and pays attention to detail. You won’t be disappointed and I hope this review helps you make the best decision for your project. Thanks again, Nagio and TBTI.

Dave was easy and great to work with. I posted a job request and that day he replied back with an estimate. He came out the next day first in the morning to repair a broken corner soap holder. Job came out great and would recommend and rehire again for other tile work.

The quality of the work was exceptional. Started the project wanting one bathroom tiled and ended up doing two. Nagio’s work ethic was impressive. He worked from the time he arrived (promptly) until he left. Always cleaned up at the end of each day. I highly recommend this company.

Danny is a true professional and does beautiful work! He was incredibly responsive and easy to work with. He installed a new tile patio for us, and it's better than we could've ever imagined. We're already talking to him about working on another project. Highly recommend if you're looking for a partner who is hard working, punctual and detail-oriented!

I was told the guys would be at my house between 9 & 10. No show at 10, but at noon I got a phone call. The boys didn’t have a time for me on their schedule, so a little misscommunication there with whomever is scheduling. They came and in 30 minutes were done. My kitchen tile looks new again and they were very nice & professional.

Looking for someone to work on your home can be nerve wracking, It is not easy to trust strangers with your private space. So many times we hear stories of contractors who do not complete work and take off with your money or cannot finish the job as promised. When we started to look at people to help us with a flooring project we talked to a lot of people. We had quotes from a few different companies, Not all were willing to come to the house to review what we were looking to do in person. HQ Builder came out and gave us a quote, from the first meeting Liuz was professional, respectful and friendly. He took time to make sure he understood what we were looking for. The tile we had already purchased before finding HQ builders was back ordered and Liuz happily worked with us to get a revised schedule together. The crew came to our house on day one and each day after, on time, and ready to work. Everyone that was in our house was polite, courteous, professional and friendly. They worked hard!!! They cared about the details, we had a few questions along the way and texts and phone calls were responded to ASAP, we had no last minute surprises and everyone really did a wonderful job. It is stressful when your home is a mess and in the middle of construction work, But we were very lucky to have HQ builders to help us in the process. We would highly recommend using HQ builders for all your flooring needs.
