Carlos was great to work with. I hired him to handle my lighting on a reno project and he was quick and efficient to install new lighting throughout the house and added can lights in the kitchen. He later came to my rescue when a previous contractor didn’t work out and was quick to pick up the add’l work installing new flooring, a ceiling repair, painting and fixing a tile backsplash in the kitchen. Thanks to him, I was finally able to sell my property and everyone complemented the finishes especially, thanks to Carlos!!

I hired Felipe to complete some drywall, paint, and railing repairs in our basement after we had a small foundation leak and the remediation company company removed the bottom 2 feet of drywall in 3 rooms. I also decided to have him paint our bedroom, prep and paint over 15 year old wallpaper in our dining room, and paint the other rooms in the basement. All I can say is that he did an awesome job. Showed every day at 7am and basically worked to 6pm. Prepped the work areas to make sure the areas stayed clean (floors, furniture, etc) and made sure I was happy with each repair before moving onto the next one. Would absolutely recommend him to anyone needing drywall and paint work done.

Charity was the least expensive of six quotes I received and it was very easy to negotiate my contract with Bobby as he was understanding and knowledgeable. Ultimately, we added several features at my request. Most important to me, Bobby agreed to allow me some sweat equity for credit to fit my budget. We arranged an agreeable time two weeks out, but Charity was able to reschedule at my convenience for an earlier time. I hired Charity to do three jobs: refinish my hard wood floors, install new carpet and install hardwood floor in a walk-in closet. Refinishing the hardwood floors in my kitchen, dining and living room, required three days due to the drying time for multiple coats of stain. Bobby and his crew worked diligently to complete work in the shortest time possible. Throughout the process, Bobby was very responsive to my phone calls and texts, as well as being very pleasant to work with. My floors turned out exactly as I wanted them. The carpet was installed in three bedrooms and a hallway a couple days later. The carpet was of better quality than the one I had initially selected, at no additional charge, and looks beautiful. My walk-in closet floor was installed the day after the carpet. I call it my small dance floor. Bobby Steele and Charity are definitely go-to people should you ever need flooring services in the future. They are attentive, courteous and professional. They are a home run in value.

We used Flooring zone for finished-on-site hardwood floors and carpet. The pricing was competitive and work was started on time. Everybody was professional. That the project was 2 days late getting finished was not too surprising for the size of the project but was the only disappointment. the End result is outstanding. I would use them again

Dustin did a fantastic job on our hardwood floors. He came solo to handle the install, but was thorough and the end result never suffered. They turned out great and all of the neighbors are asking for his info! I'd definitely hire Courtesy again.

Floors & Maintenance did a fantastic job refinishing my hardwood floors. Fabio and team sanded and refinished about 1400 SF of hardwoods in my home. The process was explained to me upfront and I was informed each day what would happen next. The service included moving my furniture out/ back in. Fabio went above and beyond by adding custom stained vent covers and replacing some rotting wood by a door. My cabinets and draperies were covered in plastic to help minimize the effect of the dust. The process took 6 days and I choose to stay in a hotel once the stain/poly was applied (fumes). My floor looks better now than it did when I moved in 18 years ago. Great Job! P.S. - I talked to 5 companies before selecting Fabio. I liked the fact that he didn't sell new floors and that his is a small family business. Good price too!

Sal and his team did a great job on our floor replacement. They performed a difficult demo caused by poor craftsmanship in laying the preexisting floor and didn’t charge me an arm and a leg for their trouble. It looks great.

Sergio is awesome! Showed up the next day, spent 4 days on the job instead of 1, and didn't charge an extra penny. Installed Laminate plank floors that looked fabulous. His wife even came to help to. Really nice guy, close attention to detail and beyond reasonably priced.

Contacted Oakerds for some new hardwood flooring for our upstairs hall, office and master while doing some other renovations. Quick response and very helpful. As happens, we had a coupe of challenges (mainly a result of the availability/ shipping of special product we choose), but Alex was excellent at keeping us informed of status and ensuring our satisfaction with the whole process and the final results. We are very satisfied and looking forward to enjoying our new floor for years to come. We would not hesitate to recommend Oakerds and will be calling Alex when we are ready to refinish and add on to the main floor. Thanks again Alex.

We hired Neal to install laminate flooring and would highly recommend him. His price was extremely reasonable; as a matter of fact so much lower than the other quotes I had gotten that I was initially skeptical. But after reading the other reviews and speaking with Neal I hired him. And I'm definitely glad I did. Our subfloor was very uneven and difficult to work with but Neal was very conscientious about taking the time to do the job right. Our floors look great and I have already recommended him to a family member.

I would give Floor Coverings International Brookhaven a excellent review. I've had some work done before on my hardwood floors and was deeply disappointed. I've just recently reached out to Floor Coverings International Brookhaven to see if the problem could be corrected. I was very surprised how accommodating and professional they were. They took the time to listen to my concerns & requests. They were very thorough in explaining the process so that I knew of the expectations & timelines. When it came to shopping for which type of flooring they allowed me the time to as many questions so that I became comfortable with the process & the type of flooring I've selected. I did not feel rushed at all! When it came to day of installation they showed up on time. Which really threw me because due to past experiences with other companies they give you a large window and still don't show up on time. Not only did they show up on time but were very professional throughout the process & cleaned up the mess afterwards. I can't say enough good things about this company. It's very rare to find a flooring company that doesn't over charge you & under deliver. I would definitely recommend them to anyone..

W.S. Floors did a great job on my floors. They installed matching floors to my existing hardwood and then refinished the floors so they all matched. Once we set up the schedule everything went smoothly. Each day they kept the work area clean and tidy. They were priced well. We are very happy with the results.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
