Wendy was great. She taught my daughter skills to help her tackle the questions on the ACT that she didn't learn in school yet. She helped her improve her individual scores as well as her cumulative score.

I am thankful to find Mr. Swadeep to tutor my son. He is an excellent teacher. From the time we started with swadeep I see my son getting all "A" in his class. School teacher was so impressed with his grades , he sent note home about his improvement in the subject. I wish I'd had a chance to say proper thankyou in person to Mr. Swadeep for being such fantastic teacher .

We found Greg last year through our daughter's school, St. Ignatius, and we are using him again this year. We tried several tutors but our daughter really found him to be quite thorough and really easy to work with. He was very focused and prepared for each lesson. Math is not in any way her strong suit and by working with Greg she was able to understand math a lot better and has gained confidence that she can do math. Greg has also worked occasionally with our son who is very strong in math. We are using Greg this year for Math and science. I like his very even tempered manner with the children as well as the fact that he seems very vested in how well they perform in class. I especially like that he lets me know how the children are doing and I never fell like he is in any way wasting time. He is very honest and straight forward. If the children need less than a full hour then that's what he will do. Additionally, he won't do the work for them, he really tries to help the children develop the independence needed to become better students. Greg is a great tutor.

Jeff was working with my son on getting ready for ACT this year. My son is a junior at high school. He is a good student, however, wasn't satisfied with his initial ACT score. We found Jeff through Thumbtack based on customer reviews. I'm glad we did. After several lessons with Jeff, my son's ACT score went 5 points up. Jeff is great about building lessons around subjects and topics that require more attention. The test taking strategies that he teaches are definitely very helpful. Jeff is very punctual and responsible. He was willing to accommodate my son's busy schedule. I highly recommend Jeff to students (and parents) who are looking for help with ACT and SAT.

I've been having Russian lessons with Marina for several months now. She's a great teacher, very positive and can explain difficult things in a simple, easy to understand way. Our lessons are always interesting and I've learned a lot from her. She's very patient when you forget words and encourages you a lot. I've tried many Russian teachers but she is by far the best one I've ever had!

Renjie is patient & encouraging. Great personality, and a perfect match for my kids. He helped increase both of their ACT scores, which also carried over into improving their GPAs. He is also very dedicated, working around busy high schoolers schedules. Renjie also tutored my 7th Grader in Math. She was struggling half way through the year, and after a few sessions with him, there was a huge improvement. Her teacher commented on her progress and her grades increased dramatically. She continued to work with him throughout the school year and looked forward to her sessions, as he calmed any anxiety she had before tests and with tough homework.

Thank you so much Ramona! I would not have managed statistic classes without your help. Her private math classes helped me graduate from school and even from university. I can truly recommend working with Ramona. She is the best help I could have ever imagine and her classes are absolutely worth the money. I also recommended her classes to a few friends and they all gave positive feedback. Please let me know if you need more detailed information.

Todd Katz was a fantastic mentor. He guided me through my first year of teaching, helping me develop new and creative ways to assess students and plan lessons. To this day, his lessons and strategies are still some of the most interesting and engaging I've encountered for both students and teachers alike. He taught me these strategies over the course of one year, and always with a positive attitude. This can be seen through his relationship with students, who are always reverant and engrossed in his classroom. I highly recommend him for any needs or concerns you have in the realm of education.

My 8th grader and sophomore are both being tutored for Math and Mike has been a great help. Even after just a couple sessions I can see that my children are more confident in the subject. He's taught them to understand more in depth what they are being taught in school.

If your looking for a great tutor look no further! We picked Hntsa to help our son increase his ACT score two points to help him qualify for an academic scholarship. Two points isn't a huge jump, but we only had five weeks to prepare and the last two ACT tests resulted in the same score. After reading Hntsa's background information and reviews we decided to give him a call. It was the best decision we ever made. Hntsa is intellectual, methodical, patient, and insightful. He took the time to really understand our son's strengths and weaknesses so that he could use that information to develop a tutoring plan that was specific to our son. The resources that he had available were abundant up to and including a watch to help keep track of time when doing a practice a test or taking it live. Hntsa also understands how the test is put together, how it works, and the best way to attack it. He also know how to speak to teens in a way that is not condescending. Our son increased his composite score by three points and his STEM score by four! Now, our son put in a lot of effort to get that score, but he never would have done it on his own. We already tried. He needed someone like Hntsa. A tutor that was genuinely interested in him not just as a student, but as a person. It's rare to find people who love what they do so much that their enthusiasm rubs off on you! That's what happened with my son and I think the learning lessons that Hntsa gave my son will stay with him beyond the ACT test. We are eternally grateful for everything he did. You will be too.

Kevin is the most outstanding tutor I have ever met or even ever spoken with. He is a retired physician who had great teachers during his career and now works with students to try and have a positive influence on their lives. My son did both high school Math and Science tutoring with him AND also did ACT test preparation with him. My son's ACT scores went from 24 before working with Kevin to 33 after working with him for just 3 months! I cannot speak more highly of him. If you want your son or daughter to really excel - you better at least meet with this guy! Darren G. Northbrook, IL

I worked with Andrew many times during the 2016-17 school year to prepare for my ACT test. Andrew was a great help and I would certainly recommend him to future students! Not only is Andrew extremely knowledgeable, he is also great at explaining and clarifying even the most complex theories and problems. He always made our tutoring sessions engaging and worthwhile, and was always able to help me out. Andrew is a great tutor and extremely enjoyable to work with!

We wanted my 7th grade son to strengthen his writing skills over the summer. With high school quickly approaching, we were hoping for him to enter with solid writing skills so his focus could be on the content of his work without struggles with language and structure. Kendra Hadnott was the perfect person to help him with this. Every part of her process is unique and customized. We started with a meeting to define our goals. Not only did she focus on our objectives, but also our child’s overall interests. He is obsessed with soccer and it was exciting as we sat down the next week to go over her tutoring plan for the summer how she incorporated reading and writing work that included his favorite soccer players, his friends, current teen technology, and more. He was thrilled to write about these topics and was really engaged in her lessons. Throughout the summer they worked on everything from spelling, vocabulary, grammar, language use, sentence structure, and essay structure. Each time they met I received a progress report on his accomplishments. He went into eighth grade with improved confidence and it showed in his writing. He tested into Honors English at OPRF and we are certain that Kendra’s tutoring helped to get him to that level. He will continue to work with her this summer to be certain he will hit the ground running next year. I highly recommend Kendra for your child’s tutoring. She is extremely professional, engaging, and it is evident that working with children is her calling.

Szilvia is a great teacher. I knew this after our first meeting. She is very kind, patient and scrupulous in providing material and explaining grammar step by step during the lesson. After every class, I feel that my English improves. Every time we repeat new words from previous meeting through fun exercises, which helps me to remember them. Time flies very fast during our meetings. Between classes, if I have any questions, I can always write to her, and Szilvia always responds fast. I have experience with other teachers and for me Szilvia is the best English teacher. Natalia

Eric has helped me improve my writing skills throughout undergrad as a French minor and throughout my first year of law school! I feel comfortable going over my drafts with him because I know he will respectfully tell me how I can improve while helping me be as clear and concise as possible. Practicing French with him is both fun and informative. Whether it's singing traditional French songs together or having everyday conversations, his zest for languages has helped me keep my French alive!

Jessica is an incredibly skilled editor. In about 2 hours she was able to make more sense of my son's 3-page autobiography for his medical school application. Throughout the process she communicated frequently before making changes. Because of the quality of her work, I am using her to edit his personal statement and entries also. I highly recommend Jessica to anyone who needs editing services.

David has been irreplaceable in helping me to prepare for a college level placement exam after several years with no mathematic exposure. He is obviously very passionate about what he does and it translates into the high quality of his tutoring. He gave me access to very intuitive resources and through them I’ve been able to re-learn more about math in a few months than in years during school, as well as doing so at my own pace which is extremely important to me. I really appreciate his patience, flexibility, and professionalism throughout the entire time we have worked together. Would definitely hire again if I need Math assistance in the future and would reccomend him if I knew somebody else who was struggling.

My son did not like being tutored. Mr. Stehlik is the tutor that my friend highly recommended. When I proposed to him to get tutoring from Mr. Stehlik for ACT, not surprisingly to get the answer-- immediately declined. I could not do anything until my son told me his practice ACT test scores-- his scores during practice had been in the range 33-34. At this point I forced him to go to see Mr. Stehlik. I pre-arranged with Val for a 6 lesson package but in case my son did not want to go further, he would only do one lesson. Nervously, I asked my son when he finished the 1st lesson, "do you feel helpful?" Surprisely, he answered "yes". "Would you like to continue for 5 more lessons?" My son said firmly "yes". The 6 tutoring lessons were done in a period of 3 weeks and then my son went for ACT test in school in April. He told me he did not feel well during test because of acute cold syndrome started in that test day morning. I then registered him again for June ACT test, thinking that he may need to repeat. Three weeks later, my son asked me, "do you think we can cancel the June ACT test and get the registration money back?" I became nervous: "what score you got?" "Composite 36", the voice came calmly and pleasantly. We highly recommend Mr. Stehlik for ACT tutoring. He is like an excellent carpenter, able to find a small hole and put the nail on the hole to make the whole piece perfect and firm!

I am an older student returning to college after being out of school for 18 years! My first course I'm taking is algebra. The word problems have been giving me quite a bit of issues. Tonight she explained them in a way that made sense, let me perform them, and corrected me if I was making a mistake. Also, she explained why I was making the mistake and how to fix it. I walked away from the session much more comfortable and feeling capable to pass this class now. Furthermore, her rate is very reasonable and worth every penny. I would definitely recommend her for tutoring.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

    • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
    • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
