Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you tell if your fridge is broken?

Use your nose — and ears — to tell if your fridge is broken and it’s time to call a pro.

The first clue is whether your food is expiring too quickly. Your fridge should be at or below 40º Fahrenheit and your freezer should be at 0º, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. If temperatures deviate from these figures, the result can be food spoilage (from too much warmth) or even a frost buildup (from a faulty freezer).

Other telltale signs that your refrigerator is broken are excessive noise, escalating electric bills and excessive heat from the back of the fridge.

If you think your fridge might be broken, don’t delay — contact the top appliance repair technicians near you today.

Is it worth it to hire an appliance repair technician?

There are several reasons why it’s worth it to hire an appliance repair technician instead of replacing the unit or doing the repair yourself. The first is to keep your warranty valid — doing a DIY repair on a home appliance may void some warranties.

Another reason is having the proper tools. While you may need to go buy extra tools to perform a repair, a technician will have the tools ready.

Hiring a pro can also help ensure a long-term fix instead of a band-aid solution, as an experienced pro will be able to assess the equipment for function.

If you have a broken appliance, get free estimates from the best appliance repair pros near you to figure out if it's worth hiring a pro to fix it for you.

How much does it cost for appliance repair?

While the average cost of appliance repair is $65, the price can range from $45 to $120. A technician may set a flat rate or charge by the hour. The average hourly cost is $65, although this can range from $40 to $95.

Appliance repair technicians typically set their prices depending on the type of appliance, level of difficulty and other factors. Some pros may also charge a service fee or a consultation fee, and they might also offer discounts for new customers.

How much does it cost to install appliances?

Installing a new appliance costs $125, on average. However, homeowners should expect to pay within the range of $120 to $150.

For less complex appliance installations, you may pay a low-end cost ranging between $65 and $100. On the other hand, more complex appliances like laundry machines, ranges and other items can cost between $175 and $326 to install. Ask whichever appliance installation service you hire to give you a price quote, if possible.

Should you tip appliance installers?

You can tip appliance installers if you feel their service has gone above and beyond. A standard tip is between $10 and $20.

Reasons you might consider tipping include a very pleasant customer service demeanor, having to carry a heavy appliance up or down the stairs, working in inclement weather, taking care not to make a mess and other acts of care and consideration. You are not obligated to leave a tip — but one is always appreciated.

Is appliance repair easy?

While some appliance repairs like cleaning the inlet filter on your washing machine or cleaning a smelly dishwasher are perfect DIY projects, others are better left to the pros.

Certain jobs can be dangerous and risk extensive damage, such as repairing gas lines or leaks. Others require experience and know-how, such as balancing a clothes washer, replacing electric wires, rewiring appliances and more. If you’re not sure how to get it done safely, contact the best appliance repair technicians near you.

What types of appliances can a professional install?

There are a number of different appliances that professionals can install for you, including:

  • Washers and dryers. These machines are heavy and very sensitive to being level and balanced, and also require hookups to water, electricity and sometimes gas or propane.
  • Cooking ranges. Your range may use propane or gas, which is a hookup job best left to the pros.
  • Microwaves. You may want to have your microwave be an undermount or in-mounted unit, which a pro can install and make it look seamless.
  • Refrigerators. These are heavy and often require a water hookup.
  • And more!

Reach out to an appliance installation service, and find out if they can install your appliance. Often, it’s helpful to provide the brand and model of the appliance you’re trying to set up.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a refrigerator?

In some cases, it might be cheaper to repair a refrigerator — in others, your best bet is to just buy a new one. The decision to repair or replace a refrigerator will depend on several factors, but the most important is cost. If the cost to repair a fridge is much more than the cost of buying a new one, it’s time to replace the fridge.

To help you determine if your fridge should be repaired or replaced, get free estimates from the best appliance repair technicians in your area.

What are the advantages of hiring an appliance installer?

There are several perks to having a professional install your appliances, including:

  • Hiring a pro saves you time and money. If it breaks down, the service person who sold and installed the machine can fulfill its warranty. However, this warranty could be void if you install it incorrectly.
  • It will work reliably. Many appliances like ranges and laundry machines rely on being on level surfaces as well as having potentially dangerous hookups installed correctly.
  • You can get repair and maintenance support. If something isn’t working or you want advice, you can call up your installer and ask if they can help you troubleshoot or repair it.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an appliance repairman or specialist when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an appliance service specialist or repairman, check your local news for community guidelines and follow the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Discuss safety protocols with the appliance repairmen before they enter your home. And when they enter your home, stay at least 6 feet apart, don’t shake hands, sanitize all involved surfaces and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

If you decide to postpone the work, consider buying a gift card from them or paying for future work. This is a great way to give back to the community, as many small businesses and individual contractors are feeling the economic effects of social distancing.

Contacted Chauncey on Friday, and he came out on Sunday. Responded very quickly to all my emails. Showed up right on time on Sunday. He and his son, Wyatt, installed 4 appliances, and did a great job. Despite doing some extra work, he kept his price the same as what was quoted. I would highly recommend hiring Chauncey and Denver Metro Appliance Repair for installation and repair.

Denver Metro Appliance, Chauncey was able to take out/dispose old washer & dryer unit & bring newer washer/dryer unit from garage and hook up/install for price far better than my previous appliance people that I've used for all my appliance needs in the past. I also had to have a part ordered and he returned again to get washer working. The part didn't work; explained of possibility that if part didn't, looking at something major on an old unit to fix. Chauncey's willing to help with disposal and delivery of another washer at more than fair price, if I can find one. He also gave me the name of a place to call that has some like the ones I have; Whirlpool brand. Thevprices are fair, availability, communication, they do deliveries, installs, and repairs, others just did repairs; thus, my new Appliance/person to go to in my contacts for all future appliance needs.

Showed up on time and quickly diagnosed the problem. Discussed the pros /cons of ordering a new part VS buying a new dishwasher, since the past was pricey. I decided to go with ordering a new part. Returned on time again. Showed me the corrosion on the broken part and quickly and efficiently installed the new one. Would definitely hire again for appliance repair.

I had a great experience with Denver Metro Appliance. Chauncey was quick to respond, genuine, and great with communication throughout my project. He diagnosed the issue with my dryer, located a replacement part and completed an estimate to repair, then gave his recommendation that it would be cheaper/more efficient to just replace it. He also returned to install my replacement, and was so flexible working with my own work schedule to make it happen. Will definitely use them again!

Refrigerator stopped working in January. referred me to Horizon Appliance and HVAC. Travis was 2 hours late after his time slot. Called us while he was already late to inform us he was having lunch. Travis diagnosed a bad evaporator on our fridge. Ordered the part and installed it. Repair did not work. Travis came back and did the thing where he began blaming a prior repair (he said the wrong refrigerant was installed on the fridge. In the past decade we have lived in the house, the fridge has faithfully worked without a single repair) He changed the refrigerant. Repair did not work. Travis came back. He gave it the old college try. At this point, I knew the repair would not work and I was right. After the three attempts, Travis has not returned our phone calls. Once in a while someone answers and tells us that she would deliver the message to Travis. Travis does not answer. Here we are $1529.24 in the hole and Travis keeps ghosting. Should have dug a little deeper. hindsight in 20/20. Half his reviewers in Google and Yelp are in the same boat. I am really just trying to help the next sucker that hires this guy. Please avoid.

This is a copy of the review I left on Yelp. Not sure how Horizon Appliance has a 4.3 on Thumbtack as they only have 2 stars on Yelp. Please read reviews on Yelp before hiring this company. Looks like they’re “hit or miss.” Just hope you’re not on the “miss” side of it like many other customers have been………… I rarely find the need to post a review on a company or restaurant unless it is very good........or in this case, very bad. Horizon Appliance replaced the ice maker in our Sub-Zero freezer. After the repair technician left, the ice started stacking up in the ice bin, but it never shut off and the ice started to overflow the ice bin. After looking at the shut off arm to the ice maker, it was very apparent that the shut off arm was too high above the ice to ever shut off the ice maker. It took me 2 minutes on the internet to realize there was supposed to be a plastic "rudder extension" that attaches to the metal shut off arm and extends down to where the ice is, in the bucket below. I called Horizon Appliance 6-7 times to get them to come back and install the missing rudder extension. Each time I talked to them they would schedule a time to come to my home and each time, they never showed. Every time I called back, there was an excuse, repair man got in an accident, family emergency, another repair took longer than anticipated, etc, etc, etc. I could write another paragraph about how bad Horizon Appliance is, but I've already wasted enough time and money with them :( I finally just purchased the part online and will install it myself. We are only out $26.82, but it could be a lot worse if you choose to use this very unreliable company! Trust the other negative reviews on Yelp! I wish I had read them before contacting them. DO NOT USE HORIZON APPLIANCE !!!!!!!!!!! Horizon Appliance - If you read this, please see the receipt for the part below. You're more than welcome to drop off a check to us at any time. __________________________________________________________________________________ Your order's in! Thanks for trying us out.
