Planning ahead

Things to know before you get started.
7 Steps to Hiring a Roofer
  1. 1. Check the offerings

Ensure that each roofing contractor makes repairs. Some companies only do large projects while others specialize in roof repairs and maintenance.

  2. 2. Look for manufacturer designations

Roofing companies earn these designations when they complete training with specific materials manufacturing companies.

  3. 3. Protect yourself

If you have an insurance claim for the repairs, handle the claim yourself. In many states it is illegal for the contractor to act on behalf of the homeowner when dealing with insurance claims.

  4. 4. Keep things legal

Be sure that each roofing contractor you make contact with carries liability insurance and a current business license. Ask about guarantees or warranties for work completed.

  5. 5. Go for variety

A written estimate is an excellent resource for budgeting repairs. Most estimates are valid for 30 days and the estimate should list in detail the work to be completed.

  6. 6. Ask about permitting

Most roof repair or maintenance requires a permit that you can obtain yourself or that is pulled by the company.

  7. 7. Watch the work

Be wary of roofing companies that hire subcontractors to complete the work. Be sure to verify that everything is completed in a legal manner.
