I met with may roofing companies before I decided to go with H & R. Ray, the owner, was very professional right from the start. He educated me on what I needed for the job and what to look for in a roofing company, even before I hired him. He was always quick to respond to calls or texts and provided a very reasonable cost for our new roof. His team of guys showed up and were very organized. They had guys on the roof and others cleaning as they worked. They cleaned everything, except for a few small shingles that fell, that no one probably even saw. I didn't find any nails in my gravel driveway (which I was VERY worried about!) or in my gardens/yard. Ray followed up with me a few days after to ensure I was happy with the work that the team did and then came by to do a walk through to ensure that everything looked good and I was satisfied. I have already recommended H & R roofing to a good friend and would be recommend them to anyone who needs a roof or really any job that they do. I will be using them again when I expand my deck.

Mario and his did an excellent job replacing my flat roof which was leaking above an extended section of my home. He is extremely professional, reliable, and honest. I did not feel any of the typical sales pressure when he came out for an estimate and he gave me an accurate assessment of the work that I needed to have to completed. I would highly recommend DeCarney Roofing for any of your roofing needs!

Ernie was incredibly responsive and kind. We did run into some difficultly with one job in particular. Mainly a roof that had significant rotting which became apparent as the flashing got pulled away. Not only did we have rotting wood and insulation, Ernie discovered a large carpenter ant nest nestled in the roof along with all the rotting wood. Time will tell as to whether or not all of the issues were completely resolved however I do want to note Ernie's incredibly hard work and dedication to getting the job done. Danielle

We originally met with Steve for an estimate to replace our roof, but before he came over for the first meeting a tree fell on our sunroom, and so we needed additional repairs associated with that damage. Steve came over and was very patient with my questions, gave me multiple estimates for a few different scopes of work, and was very willing to help me deal with the insurance process (though that turned out not to be necessary). Though his estimate wasn't the cheapest, his excellent customer service was above and beyond compared to the other roofing companies. Steve was always responsive to our questions and did a great job keeping us updated on schedule and progress as the project moved forward. The roof and sunroom now both look great! Overall I had a very positive experience with all of Stella Construction's employees and would definitely work with them again.

Boston Best Construction was great to work with. They did a complete reno of the first and second floor of our new home - a mid-18th century first period colonial. Eduardo and his team did everything including structural work, a complete remodel of our kitchen and bathrooms, HVAC work, and refinishing our historic wide pine flooring. He and his company were professional, delivered on their timelines, and we love our newly renovated home. Couldn’t be happier.

The Storm over the weekend blew away part of my roof, this was an horrific emergency which needed to be fixed right away, I make some calls around, and also applied on Thumbtack, got multiple responds, but Raul Castro was the one that could do it the soonest. He came the next day as he promised, was on time, assess the damage, went and got the replacement shingles, went up there and got my damaged roof repaired, leaving it looking as if there was never a damage. Wow! It was a pleasure to have him work on my roof, and I'll recommend him to anyone wanting roofing job done. His professionalism and his superb knowledge of the profession comes through as you interact with him. Very grateful to have this problem taken care of without breaking my bank!!

I needed a small repair job, flashing on my chimney. I contacted several roofing who did not return my calls. I then went thru thumbtack.com who put me in touch with northeast constuction. A representative of the company, Shawn, came to my home within 48 hrs, evaluated the job and gave a fair price. The job is expected to done within a week. We've used Budget Exteriors for several exterior projects-clapboard and trim out 5 roof dormers, replace exterior cedar shingles. The house is a very large, tall structure, slate roof with minimal access to upper floors. Very challenging to work on. On every job Lou was easy to work with, professional, and came prepared to show us options for materials as well as design considerations. Most recently we had all the wood porch railings replaced and presumed we'd use pressure treated or composite lumber. Again Lou showed us a PVC line that accents the decks very nicely, is stylish and had a variety of color choices. Once again, he came through with choices that made the job outstanding. Lastly, I want to credit the Budget Exterior work crews. Depending on the job, we've seen a mix of four different crews, each of which have been courteous, professional, diligent and considerate of the property. I would highly recommend Budget Exteriors for any roofing or exterior contract work.

Eric was extremely knowledgeable about my minor roofing issues. His estimate of amount of work needed was accurate and his price was very reasonable for my small project. He came on time both to review my project and to do the job. Eric worked diligently and nonstop on the project until it was done. He cleaned up all of debris afterwards and hulled it away. I really appreciate his expertise, workmanship, and professionalism. He’s a great roofer. I will definitely hire him again if I have another roofing job. Thanks Eric, my flashing looks great.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
