We hired Dan to tutor our son for high school Math a couple of years ago. He was punctual, professional, gave us very helpful feedback and his methods were effective. Our son is now sophomore at the University of Florida. We hired him again this year to help our second son with SAT. His score went up by more than 200 points, well within the range to get into UF. We would highly recommend him for high school Math or standardized tests such as SAT or ACT.

Finally, the school year is done. Phew…what a year it was for us. Our 7th grader(Going to 8th this fall), Shresht struggled for the first half of the year with Math. He used to get all stressed out and it was affecting his personality. And then we found this personal tutor Jon….Jon was a god sent. Jon has been a wonderful tutor and a great influence on Shresht. Shresht would look forward to meeting with Jon each week and work together on problem-solving….he helped him to start liking math. Shresht completed the school year with good grades and has decided to pursue the CBE based test-out this summer. So if all goes well, he should be doing Pre-Calc in 8th grade. We are very happy and wanted to put it out, just in case, this could help other kids/parents.

I just finished my senior year in high school, and I am pleased to say it ended with an A in AP calc AB for the entire year (both semesters)! I am still waiting for my AP scores, but the practice we did in class put me between a 4 and 5. I know that this is so much because of Andy’s help. His one on one tutoring helped me break down particularly difficult concepts that were brushed over during school lessons. His flexibility helped make tutoring a natural part of my schedule; we even did a few sessions over Skype because of weather. All in all, it was a great experience. Next year, I will attend Yale, and I am grateful that Andy was able to get me there.

Carrie comes every Wednesday to teach our 8 year old daughter singing lessons. Here is a direct quote from my daughter: "Carrie is awesome because of the way she pushes me up. For example, whenever I feel like I am doing terrible, she reminds me that I am doing great and that inspires me a lot." As her parents, we HIGHLY recommend Carrie as a voice teacher because of her dedication, professionalism, and how fun she makes the lessons for our daughter. She has been extremely flexible with her schedule, and we find her fees very reasonable. She is just the best.

Alex has a real talent for explaining concepts in a way that is heard and understood by my boys. He has taught them each various music lessons and music theory as well as tutoring for math and language. My boys say they feel smarter after their sessions with Alex. Thank you, Alex, for being conscientious and serious about tutoring.

Viking Tutors is an excellent tutoring service. My daughter used the online help service for an advanced college calculus course and the instruction was outstanding. The lessons were always on time and very helpful. The prices were very reasonable and I would certainly recommend the service.

My daughter Danielle has always struggled in math. By fourth grade, she was really falling behind in class, so her teacher thought that it would be a good idea for Danielle get some extra math help after school, and Jana Brain was the tutor that she highly recommended! My daughter began working with Jana 2-3 times a week, and WOW..a Huge improvement!! not only in her grades, but also in her overall confidence at school. We continued working with Jana, 5th and 6th grade as well. Jana is superb at math, and has an amazing ability to be able to explain each step of any given problem in a way that the child can understand, and then work it on their own. She is extremely patient, and just super sweet! My daughter looked forward to seeing her each week!

If you are looking for a Calculus or Physics tutor Alex without a doubt is the person to use. I had been spending two hours a night with my daughter and she was meeting with her teacher before and after school to no avail. She was flunking AP Calculus and their was only 4 weeks left in the class. I hired Alex in panic mode. She had two unit exams and a final left to bring her grade up. In four short weeks Alex brought her grade up from an E to a C and she got a B on the final. There is no way my daughter would have passed the class if it had not been for Alex. Alex instilled her with the confidence that she could learn the material and would be successful. That she would be able to learn the Calculus and Physics that she needs to pursue her goal of a career in Marine Biology. Alex has helped keep the dream alive in my daughter and I will forever be grateful for that. When I listened to Alex interact with my daughter during the sessions his love of teaching, genuine desire to help my daughter and ability to connect with her in a fun and productive way was way beyond any of the other tutors I have ever used. As far as responsiveness, Alex rose to the challenge and juggled his schedule. He worked around my daughters cross country meet schedule and other commitments while also making sure he was able to meet with her the night before each exam to help her with final prep for them. He met with her two to three times a week when it worked for her to make sure she passed the class. My daughter has dyslexia which creates unique challenges particularly in math. She tends to look at problems and get to solutions in different ways then most people would. Alex took the time to make sure he understood how my daughter was looking at problems and would adjust the way he approached the solution to match her problem solving style rather than trying to force her to solve the problem using the standard textbook solution guide. Alex made the sessions productive but also fun. I would hear them joke and make light of errors. My daughter also used Alex the following term for her Honors Physics class with the same results. Alex took the time to drive to my daughters school to meet with her physics teacher. He reviewed the curriculum and her tests to see what areas my daughter was struggling with which helped him fine tune his tutoring time with my daughter. You will be extremely pleased with Alex.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:
