This week Chef Liljequist catered our family meal - spaghetti with homemade meatballs and a delicious hearty red sauce. He was so easy to work with and met me at my budget. So friendly and easy to work with. I plan to hire him for a future event when we will require a personal chef.

It was wonderful working with Blessed Occasion Catering & Event Planning. Chef Keita responded to all of my communication in a timely manner. Her and her crew treated everyone at my event with a lot of respect and kindness. The food was excellent. Thank you!!!! I am attaching pictures of some of my finger food layout.

I hired Heavy Smoke to cater my wedding. What an amazing dinner. We had heard about the food and went to a BBQ cookoff to try some of the things they make to see if it was something we would like to pursue at the wedding. My mouth didn't know what hit it. We chose the brisket and pulled chicken and what a crowd pleaser this was. We had a picnic style wedding and Heavy Smoke not only cooked the meat, but they made their famous baked beans, salad, and a wonderful special recipe cole slaw. Minus the "I do's", this was honestly the highlight of the wedding. I spent more time answering questions about where I found them than I did about the wedding. :) I was very happy that everyone had such a wonderful BBQ dinner, and was very impressed with the way the guys handled the catering side of things. It was display that was very well put together, and certainly worthy of any wedding. Not a soul went home hungry. Great stuff and great guys. We are thinking about a redo very soon. Thank Heavy Smoke!!!

Kevin did an excellent job for our event. We had an outdoor setup where he prepared about 20 individual piece of six different small bite appetizers and had a server bring them around to the group. The food was delicious and expertly plated. My group really enjoyed the variety of items he prepared, and I think everyone was full at the end, even though it was only planned to be appetizers! I'd highly recommend Kevin for his professionalism, flexibility, and the creativity he used in his preparation.

Natina was prompt, well planned as well as full of ideas that we had not even thought of during our initial consultation. When it came to our ideas, Natina was very patient and she listened to all of our requests and executed them all to our liking. The food was amazing! It was far beyond our expectations. Noirblanc is my #1 choice for any future events. Thanks Again!

As a personal chef, I’m available in the evenings to help bring together your family meals and special occasions. My services include menu planning, purchasing the necessary ingredients, meal preparation, and cleanup. I also do meal preparation for meals during the week that are easily re-heatable. I can recreate some of your family favorites or plan a menu for you while getting your input and approval along the way. I’m able to make any accommodations for food allergies or dietary restrictions that are present with any guests or family members. Each session can be custom tailored to meet your needs for any occasion. As a private cooking instructor, I come to your home or apartment and give you hands-on instruction in menu planning, meal preparation, and proper cooking techniques. I have a variety of different menu items to choose from for each of the three different meal times: breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a special menu for the holiday season(s). I also give my clients the option of picking some of their own recipes that they need help perfecting or tweaking. I mainly do one-on-one classes, but I'm available to do group classes by request. I purchase the ingredients prior to class, arrive early to get everything set up, and stay until things are cleaned up. Do you have a dinner party or special gathering coming up? Sit back, relax, and let me wow your guests with a specially prepared menu. As a private caterer, I sit down with my clients and establish a food budget and get their full approval on all aspects of the menu. I prepare, deliver, setup and display the food items before the start of the event. Are you looking for a more intimate setting? I also offer passed hors d'oeuvres and/or plated food items. I prepare all food items, serve, and then clean up at the end of the event. You can book me in advance today for your upcoming event.

I try to cater to what the client likes but also introducing them to new flavors and ingredients.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
