Jose did an excellent job cleaning out our gutters. Had our roof replaced a little over a year ago and apparently the roofers left way too many nails which were clogging our highest gutters. Jose was able to remove every nail as well as all other gutters flow freely!! Would def hire again!

PRIMO COMPANY A++ The shingles on the house did not look that bad, but what was under them was scary. I found one leak and repaired it, but while in the attic I found two more leaks that were not showing, so right then I decided we needed a new roof. I got 6 competitive quotes and three (3) were for ~$9,500, or very close to it. Three were over $11,000, so all but one of the high bids were removed from the bidding process instantly. ABJ Roofing surprised me. They were the only roofer to actually get a ladder out and go up on the roof. They took great pride in learning what the roof challenges were so they could make a competitive quote. And while talking with the estimators, they were very friendly, low pressure, and offered more information than was needed to help me make an informed decision. One of the higher priced roofs told me I didn't need a new roof, and that it could just be repaired, which early on was one of our options, so we thought. ABJ Roofing informed me of nail holds left in the roof from a previous repair job many years prior. Holes that should have been caulked, but were not. This information helped spur us on to deciding to go ahead and get a new roof. There were already to many hidden mysteries under these shingles. Now we needed to figure out which roofer to select! The other companies offered assistance, but we felt pressured as they presented they options. ABJ Roofing had no pressure, they were not salesmen out to make a quota, but rather, they were simply there to give you an honest quote and provide you with the information you needed to help you make the decision on what material you wished to use. Other roofers didn't wish to take the time to explain the newer types of felt and synthetic underlayment. I was referred to ABJ Roofing and I am glad I was. I have replaced a few roofs when I was younger and I know my way around a roof. They did not feed me any lines like some of the other roofers did. This disqualified the 'other' roofers quickly. In the end, it came down to two (2) $9,500 quotes and one (1) $11,425 quote. But after further research, the high quote was disqualified too, because the shingle they were choosing to use were in my opinion, not as good as the Certianteed brand. And they would not budge on using anything other than GAF product. The property was well cared for. Tarps were laid out, plywood was placed over windows and doors to protect them while they removed the old shingles, and all of the rotten roof was replaced with great care. I would go out every 45 minutes or so and make a round of the house, taking pictures and what not. I climbed the ladders to go up and inspect their work. Looking at how well they interleaved the valleys, whether the ridge vent was to my satisfaction, how the custom drip edge was made and installed, making sure it covered over into the gutter, and making sure that they were replacing all the rotten spots. There were two (2) issues where the builder of the home took shortcuts. The ABJ guys would not stand to roof over what the builder left for them. Instead, they took the time to repair what the builder should have done 24 years ago and moved on without question. And when I ask for a change in what was in the contract, there were no issues. Ask them for a cash discount! And pay with cash! You'll save a lot! The left today, leaving the place very clean. Our bushes are as they were, and the place looks nice. Would I use them again; yes. Would I stay at home to oversee the project again; no. There work is impeccable. I am very impressed with the custom drip edges they made onsite. This could have just thrown up a standard drip edge and no one would have known the difference. But I would have, because I crawled up and inspected it at several locations. They also fixed some rotten fascia at no extra charge. I like good people, and they are good people. The crew were all hard workers. I do not think I need to say any more, Try them, You'll like them. -Steve

After several attempts by roofers to fix my leaky roof I contacted Travis. He quickly determined the problem. He replaced roof boots, flashing and shingles around vent pipes. He took pictures and showed me the old damage boots before throwing them away. I actually had one roofer tell me I needed an entire new roof. Travis saved me a lot of money and I haven't had any more problems. Thank you!

Everything went smoothly! We met, received estimate onsite, signed contract and the work began a few days later. The crew did an excellent job in removing the old shingles and installing the new roof. The clean up was great, you couldn't tell that they had been there. He also sent pictures as the roofers were working which I thought was an added bonus.

I ended up deciding to replace the whole roof, and went with this vendor because of their friendliness, high level of expertise, and professionalism. I loved how clean and accurate their neatly emailed estimate was, and how it detailed the scope of the work better than all other roofers who responded to the full roof job. It's just nice to see all the special situations mentioned in writing, it gave me a much better feeling about the vendor. I also liked that they were one of the only guys willing to come out and do a small repair job for me. What happens if a tree falls on my house? I know who to call for my roofing needs.

After getting several vague inquiries and 'quotes' from others on Thumbtack which were immediately moved into the metaphorical rubbish bin, my wife and I narrowed our choices down to two local companies: PBC, LLC, and a competitor not listed on Thumbtack. Stan and Bill set up a time promptly to assess our roof, and gasp, actually took the time to get a ladder, climb to the a part where the pitch wasn't steep, take photos of visible damage, etc. (trust me when I say that some roofing companies will try to just point out the damage from the ground level without lifting a finger). During their visit, they had a folder prepared with line item quotes, aerial views, general information about the stuff needed, etc. which struck me as being, well, quite organized. The overall quote from PBC was just ever slightly better than the competitor (the competitor had a similarly organized proposal), so we chose PBC, LLC. Communication with Stan and Bill (mainly Stan) was clear and concise from Day 1. When he said, "Someone's dropping off the roofing materials on [x] day by [y] time," that happened. When he said, "The roofers are starting work on [x] day by [y] time", it happened. Start to finish, our roofing project of approximately 20 squares took 3.5 working days: first day was tear-off, 2nd and 3rd day were install/repair, and half a day more of debris removal. Speaking of debris removal, I'd have to go outside right now and specifically look for any errant shingles, nails, or other materials. The crew/Stan/Bill probably got 99.999999 percent of everything, which is greatly appreciated since our dogs enjoy running about in the yard. We also had them do 2 handyman'ish jobs - removing a large piece of tempered glass from a previous owner, and fixing our chimney sweep-out door. Both were done in a timely and clean manner. Really happy with the way our roof looks, and thanks again for the fantastic overall service!

Steve and his crew did a fantastic thorough job replacing old fascia board, soffit and fixing a mess left by a previous contractor (roofer). The house is sealed tight with a professional paint job around the perimeter. I am grateful to have found Steve and appreciate his hard work; he is the most efficient worker that I've hired and really understands the job at hand. No shoddy work by the Straight-up Home Improvement crew--I would trust them with any job, and Steve is a down to earth and honest man. Thanks!!!!!

As a property manager with over 200 properties, I have used Tomas for many jobs ranging from a full apartment roof replacement to small roof/gutter repair. He has always been extremely professional and always does what he says he will do, when he said he would do it. His prices are extremely competitive as well. There is no other roofer around that I would use and I highly recommend his services.

Eddie (I call him Mr. T.) is a very nice and reasonable roofer and builder. He was able to do an estimate on the day I called him (Monday) and have the roof repaired in 2 spots by the time of the inspection (because we are under contract to sell the house) on Thursday. It was great that he could come out so quickly, and get the job done so well and for a very reasonable price. I really appreciated it, especially, since we were in such a pinch with the inspection! Thanks Eddie (Mr. T.)!

My roof looks wonderful and they also fixed my siding. Very hard workers and very honest. They bought to many supplies for the roof and returned them and refunded the money to me. Most roofers would have pocketed the extra money. Very good prices. I got three quotes and they were they best. I'm am so glad I went with them. Could t ask for a better job. Will call them for other projects.

By far my Best experience with a General Contractor ever! Although my projects varied greatly, AJ Holt Repairs was able to address them ALL. Over the course of a month, I had an issue with my furnace, my front stoop needed repairing, and I had an unfinished drywall and painting project. Each time I called for service, AJ Holt Repairs was able to complete the project same day. Anton was a pleasure to work with. He was very upbeat and professional. Anton was able to quick identify the problem with my furnace and quickly repaired it. He came equipped with all the required tools and materials. AJ Holt Repairs is my 1st choice for all my home projects!

The roofers did an excellent job and went out of their way to ensure the roof on a small shed was secure, square and matched the house. I offered but the workers choose to hall their tools and shingles a distance instead of driving in the back yard as offered.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
