Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

How much does it cost to move a couch?

It costs around $290, on average, to move a couch. However, your actual cost will depend on a variety of factors. Couch movers will often quote the job based on the size of the couch, as well as how far it has to travel. A larger couch, such as a sectional, will likely cost more money to move.

On the other hand, smaller couches typically cost less, as there are fewer sections and fewer people are required to move it. Some couches may be very delicate due to their age, or they may have certain decorative details that complicate the moving process. These may cost more as well.

Contact professional furniture movers near you to get estimates for your move.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How do you move large pieces of furniture?

Moving large furniture can be done with help from the best movers in your area and careful planning. First, get an idea of how much the furniture weighs and how much each mover can manage. The next step is figuring out the path the furniture will take as it exits its point of origin and makes its way to its new home. Professional movers then use dollies, furniture protectors and personal safety gear for a safe, smooth move.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

We used Joyful Movers to move our furniture from Cary to Holly Springs, NC. Greg and his team were wonderful to work with. They were upbeat, friendly, and we were amazed at how easily they were able to navigate some of our large (and heavy) furniture. I have already recommended them to friends!

Elephant Movers were excellent. I am so glad I used them to move heavy furniture from my first floor home upstairs and, again, heavy furniture downstairs. I requested several of their business cards so I can give them to friends. I will certainly be recommending them and using them in the future.

The workers were efficient and did a great job moving my furniture to the Penske truck. The movers loaded everything into the moving truck strategically. I arrived at my destination city after 10 hours of driving the Penske truck and there was no damage to any items in the truck.

We had an awesome experience working with Romero Movers. They were very careful with our furniture. They loaded a uhaul for me and made sure the furniture would not shift during the drive. When it became apparent my truck was not large enough, they left to bring one of their own trucks to finish the job. Highly recommend and great prices!

I ordered this service for my son who recently moved to Durham. I had a friend who had a couch and loveseat for him but no way to move the furniture. Honey Do Crew was the most reasonably priced, responded immediately to my request, showed up on time and stayed in constant communication with all parties. I would hire them again!

I hired Thurston to move some heavy furniture from my old house to new house. He is reliable, punctual and definitely a guy who one wants to work with for repeated chores which need extra set of hands.

This guy is a backyard hack, looking for the easy and quick moves. He rents the Uhaul and arrives at your location with a random helper he picked up that morning looking for a fix. I gave Dwight all the information for our move and he provided a price, when the job proved to be to big he started skirting his end of the bargain. In the end I'm left with a partial move, damaged furniture, and three bedrooms completely disassembled with a family tired and ready for bed. I wouldn't hire him again and I would not recommend him at all.

My experience with High Proformance Movers was average. I had somewhat of a unique situation in that I just needed my furniture and other belongings moved from my 1 br apartment into my uhaul. They arrived late which was fine because they called to let me know they were stuck in traffic. When they arrived I’d already started disassembling my bed and had to dig to find a screwdriver that would unscrew the nails because they didn’t bring any tools (except a furniture dolly, I think). I asked if I should go to the front office to ask for a utility dolly, but he said we’d be fine without it. Most of the moving process was satisfactory however I know my stuff was not a 2 hour job. Matt was willing to negotiate on that when I booked the move, which I greatly appreciated. But I couldn’t help but feel like the move could have been done quicker. I took the liberty of carrying down boxes to speed up the process down one flight of stairs to the truck. There was also an elevator that the gentlemen used to bring down the furniture and boxes, but it wasn’t my expectation that they would also wait on the elevator to take them back up one floor empty handed....especially not when I, a female in her 20’s, was booking it up and down the stairs with or without any items. Not all places have elevators so I feel like the luxury was milked a little too much. There’s no doubt in my mind that the job could have been finished 20 minutes earlier. I will say they were very nice and friendly, and their price was the lowest for what I needed at the last minute, but I wouldn’t recommend them if you’re looking for efficiency/hustle.
