Carmen and her team are some of the hardest working people I have had the honor to see in action. We chose An Affair to Remember to cater our daughter's wedding in Morganton because she is down-to-earth and seemed very service-oriented. If there is something we need at weddings is service. Carmen's team exceeded our expectations. For the sake of simplicity I asked Carmen to prepare a buffet. Everyone said the food was delicious. As the mother of the bride I had no appetite (except for champagne). All the food was devoured. I feel I did not take advantage Carmen's full abilities by not asking for passed appetizers or food stations. She arrived with her team around noon and stayed until 11pm to wash all our rented dishes and clean up. By the time she left our kitchen was spotless. Bravo, Carmen. The only thing I would add for someone who has never had a caterer: buy your own ice. It was an oversight on my part and assumed caterers brought it. Thankfully I had a willing guest happy to run out for it. Another thing: We had a cheesecake wedding cake and I was worried about cutting it. Carmen stepped in and said she would cut it and set out the coffee service at the same time. She helped make our wedding wonderful.

This was our organization’s Holiday Dinner – I volunteered my house as it is large and can hold lots of guests (100 plus). I negotiated with Chef Tyler and he developed a creative menu that addressed all of our needs. On the appointed day, he and his crew of six staff, including several from the local culinary school, just took over and in a few short hours prepared the most amazing and delicious meal – Yummy hors d’oeuvres, several entrees (Cherry Glazed Pork Loin and Mushroom Bourgogne) plus sides and a wonderful holiday dessert. The big hit was the Kale Salad and everyone wanted the recipe. I can’t imagine a smoother or more elegant event. Also a terrific job on clean-up. I highly recommend Chef Tyler and his team for similar large events.

100% satisfied. We used Julian (Chef Segreto) and his wife Lilly for a catering event at our house in Dec 2017. We had approx 30 people over. The food Julian made was incredible. The service that Julian & Lilly provided was top-notch. We will definitely be using them again next year. We recommend Chef Segreto & Lilly without reservation! Pete & Kate Ford

We needed catering of lunch and dinner for at least 30 days to possibly 1 year, 7 days every week for approximately 100 people with emphasis on vegetarian, vegan, gluten free and special diets. Many caterers with great reviews were easy to dismiss once they were interviewed. Carolina catering delivered what they promised: delicious food at a reasonable price with excellent personal service and a huge selection - even for those special dietary needs. I have used caterers throughout the country to take on this monumental task and no one has delivered the quality, variety, and scrumptious food Carolina Gourmet Catering has. I cannot thank them enough. And, by the way, we are 3 weeks into our project and continue to be very happy with the results. The only problem we have had was running out of food because people have been going back for second and third helpings because the food is so good! Make sure you prepare for this if it's buffet style.

Roosterdoodles catered my parents 50th wedding Anniversary and I can't even find good enough words to describe how great the entire experience was to have worked with them. They were kind and professional from the moment I met with them all the way up until they finished my event. The food they prepared was over the moon delicious and presented with so much care and personal touches. My guests kept asking who the caterer was. After this whole experience they feel like family to me and I will use them for every special event I have!!!! A huge THANK YOU and a round of applause to the lovely Donato's!!!!!!!

Yolanda catered a corporate Thanksgiving luncheon for our team and the feedback was very positive. Delicious, moist and well seasoned turkey, great sides and a very nice set up. She got back to me very quickly with a menu and was a pleasure to work with. We love supporting small, local businesses when possible and with good food quality, it makes our decision even easier to do it again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

  • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
  • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
  • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
  • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
  • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
