We are very pleased with our choice of Frank to do the job of putting together and installing our IKEA kitchen. Anyone who has put together IKEA furniture before knows it's quite a task! He is a family-owned business and works wonderfully with his son and wife. It was a pleasure getting to know them, all while watching our kitchen come together! Frank is thorough and precise about his decisions, always making sure we were happy. He saved us a good chunk of money, costing significantly less than the cost of the IKEA installers, while still doing a professional job. Best of all, we created a friendship with him and his family. They were so sweet to our 5 & 2 year old sons and were beyond trustworthy. Sometimes when you hire someone to do work in your home that requires a few days to accomplish, you can't wait to just have it done and have 'strangers' out of your house. I can honestly say that it was hard to say goodbye to him and his family when the job was done. Thank you Frank! We would do it all over again if we had to. We will add photos of the finished kitchen when our backsplash is done later this week!

I requested a hardwood flooring installation labor cost for my first floor via Thumbtack and recieved three quotes. Noel from OTB Tile, one of the quoter, came in my house for actual measurement then gave final cost. He was chose becuase of the costless and I felt he was realiable as well. He told me the installation could take more than two days however he would try his best. Noel and his helper started and finished the service on time in two days as he promised. The day before starting up he sent a message to my phone to confirm for the next day install. They moved all furnitures to safe place then put them back after finishing. They removed old carpet with caution so there was no mess in house. The job was done on 8/29/2014. I love my new hardwood flooring. I highly recommend him to somebody who needs hardwood flooring or tile installation. Thanks Noel for great work and professional.

On 9/20/18 he fixed what I considered a tricky issue with my exterior wood siding. I was extremely happy that he got it fixed. He said he'd be here on Thursday and he had the job done well before lunch. Very happy and definitely recommend.

You can't do better than Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance. Nick Gillaspie is a true professional with an artist's eye. He recently completed a job for our family, rebuilding our house in Dilworth which was over 100 years old and in very rough condition. Before we started with Nick, a real estate agent told us that it was a tear-down. Now that Nick has finished his work, it's structurally sound and beautiful. As someone who's done a little bit of construction and carpentry myself, I know good work when I see it. Nick can do just about anything in the building trades himself and do it well: frame and finish carpentry, drywall, flooring, tile work, painting, roofing, landscaping. But, when extra help is needed, he hires the best. His crews are mature, very hard working and fun to hang out with. Nick himself is a pleasure to work with, a really nice guy with a good sense of humor. He's a family man with a serious work ethic. He talked through different possibilities for solving construction problems and cleared every major decision with me in advance. He worked hard to find the least expensive solution to problems that could have been costly. And he came up with creative ideas for how to make a very old house not just functional, but a real pleasure to look at and live in. I'd work with him again any time, for any kind of job. If you're looking for someone for any job, large or small, and would like a reference about Nick Gillaspie and Gillaspie Handyman Building & Maintenance, please email me at sikahn@bellsouth.net with your phone number, and I'll give you a call.

Bob Blake did an “attic build-out” for us in our new home, including framing and installing a custom sized door and installing some plywood flooring in the attic. Bob and a helper did a fine job – he was reliable, skilled, and conscientious. When there were a couple of adjustments to be made to complete the job, Bob made sure that they were accomplished in a timely way, to our satisfaction. We found Bob’s price to be better than most, and we are very pleased with the results. I would gladly hire him again for home improvement or repair.

John and his crew installed wood flooring throughout the house and ceramic tile in the baths and laundry. They did an excellent job, arrived when they said they would and the cleanup after was most impressive. I would highly recommend them. Great job guys.

I obtained quotes from several painting companies in the Charlotte area, and ultimately decided to use BWH Services due to Ben Hamrick’s professionalism, the company’s reasonable pricing, and seeing their paint work that had been done in another person’s home. I hired BWH Services to paint all of the interior walls in my new construction home, and my experience was great. The job took approximately 4 days. The crew was polite, and covered our brand new flooring very well and cleaned up after themselves when the job was done. My only request at the final walkthrough was for an additional coat of paint on a very dark color that we chose to use in one room, which Ben took care of immediately on that same day. Our home looks beautiful with freshly painted walls and I would definitely use BWH Services again and recommend them to friends and family. Thanks, Ben! -Lauren Mikulan

Steve came over to install curtain rods on three windows, two of which were corner windows. I had also asked him to remove a partially-detached towel bar in a bathroom. He arrived right on time and got right to work. He tackled the towel bar issue first so that he was able to put two coats of plaster on before leaving, which means that I just need to do a very light sanding and then repainting on my own. The curtain rods turned out great, too! My walls are plaster, and had either brick or steel behind them in certain places, so the job had a few challenges. Also, it's an old building, and the resultant settling meant that he had to make some slight allowances for the positioning of the brackets so that the curtains hung evenly. Steve was great at helping me think through how close I wanted the rods to extend across the window frame, given that the windows were on located near/at the room corners. For the corner windows, he suggested placing the inside brackets halfway across the rod, so that the curtain panels would be spaced more evenly and would fall better. The finials on my rods were small, but Steve allowed enough space on the end window to allow for larger finials, without hitting up against the right angle wall. Given the technical expertise required on this job, as well as his design and planning thoughts, I am very grateful to have had Steve come over and get the job done!

Dan and his team are AMAZING and I feel so grateful to have found them! They are excited to work on my home which included almost an entire remodel...Removing walls in the kitchen for an open floorpan, completely remodeling the kitchen, moving a bathroom, moving the laundry room upstairs and creating a mudroom in it's place. Building into unused attic space to create a walk in closet and bathroom in my daughter's bedroom and remodeling and rearranging our master bathroom. Not to mention all the new flooring, cabinets, and drywall where there was once popcorn ceilings. And they were EXCITED to do it. Most people I interviewed were overwhelmed at the task or WAY too expensive. He was priced fairly yet the work quality is far superior to other remodeled homes I have seen. Don't even waste your time with other companies. I love that I felt like we were working together as a team and he was always willing to spend time with me making sure I felt comfortable with each step!

I have pets and a child so needed the carpet taken from my living room and I wanted it to match the linoleum flooring that was in my kitchen. They went the extra mile and got the exact same flooring by contacting the company that built my home. It's perfect and was a great decision. I'm very happy.

Installed Armstrong hardwood flooring. 21 Floors quoted me a fair price, set up a date for installation, showed up as scheduled, installed the floor as expected and cleaned up after themselves. They were a pleasure to work with and the floor looks great. I would definitely recommend.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
