Every Detail Catering provided the food for my baby shower held at my home. Everything was set up and ready within 10-15 mins. The presentation was professional and included everything we needed ( Butter, dressings, syrups, salt and pepper). The food was excellent and there was definitely enough for people to have seconds and thirds. The communication throughout the entire transaction was also very smooth and easy. I would definitely consider using again for future events.

All I can say is WOW! We hired chef Chris and his team at NY Catering Service super last minute, as our original caterer backed out two days before the event. We couldn’t believe what this company was able to pull together on such short notice for a large group of 150 people!! The food, staff, decor, everything was perfect and Chris was so helpful from the very start. Communicative, professional, and reassuring. I guess it was a blessing in disguise that the other guy canceled. We’ll be using Chef Chris and NY Catering Service for all our future events! Highly recommended!

From the very first contact with Lauren from Bacco Catered Events, it was totally professional and first class all the way. It was a big relief for me when Lauren took care of all the catering, equipment rental and staffing and it all worked like clockwork. All the guests thought the food was really delicious and commented how wonderful the staff was - friendly, courteous and very professional. They turned the house and garden into a special space, perfect for the birthday party, and by the end of the evening the house spotless and back to normal. Thank you Lauren and your Dream Team for helping to make the party very special. It was a total pleasure working with you. Bruce

We hired Tamara and her team for a 15 person dinner party. I wanted light bites so everyone would be able to eat as they wanted and mingle while enjoying their food. They met every one of my expectations. Tamara with Amoraco catering was so easy to work with. She was timely, responsive, and very flexible in creating the perfect menu for my dinner party. We were lucky enough to have chef Mona cook for us. Mona was so friendly and took care of everything so I did not have to worry about a single thing but enjoying the food and my guests. The food was outstanding-everything she cooked was perfect. We had 15 people and everyone commented on how awesome Mona was and how amazing the food was. Can not recommend Amoraco Catering enough! Will definitely be using them again.

We had a good fortune to have Manjar cater our silver annniversay party in NYC. This team took all the logistics work in planning the event out of our hands and delivered a well executed plan and great food that was praised by all guests! What was unique the challenges that arose of the dance floor and weather issues on a rooftop of a high rise, but that Manjar wa sable to handle and overcome and respond t the challenges effectively for a very successful anniversary party. I would recommend Manjar Boutique Catering anytime.

I met Erika and savored her cooking during a private week long health retreat in Hudson, NY. Erika's cooking was mouth watering, innovative and used local and mostly organic ingredients. All the participants also lost quite a few pounds that week while not feeling deprived and celebrating food! I strongly recommend Erika for catering, health retreats and teaching ....

Chef Martin, his delicious food, warm disposition, meticulous attention to detail and easygoing charm were probably the best part of our wedding day. Right from the start we knew he would make our day perfect in every way. He immediately understood our needs, helped us find the best solutions and always had a positive attitude and a jovial ease. The food was perfect and his staff was lovely and professional. We'd love to work with him again some time soon and are pleased to recommend him for any of your event/party catering needs.

Best experience ever. We needed a bartender for a private birthday party I was organizing for my boss and took a chance on hiring HighLife. Not only did we get a bartender but we got Tyler himself - the owner of HighLife. He was amazing. Our chef we hired from a different company was a disaster and Tyler took it upon himself to help serve the meals, set the tables with wine glasses, pour water/wine throughout dinner, not to mention making the best margaritas on the planet. Extremely reasonable prices with top notch service that is so hard to find these days. Next party I organize I will simply call Tyler. Whether I need a bartender, chef, catering, etc - HighLife will be my only phone call. Thanks for everything!

f despite that it was thanksiving day, and she had her own family, Chef Aless catered my family's special day with superb attention to both the food, which was beyond delicious and plentiful, and presentation. She arrived early with a trolley full of delectable hors d'oeuvres, the best turkey ever baked, and containers full of great accompanying veggies. This was the first time I have ever needed outside catering, but the experience of having Chef Aless was so seamless, and the food was so perfect, that even if I have to invent an occasion, which I will, I know she could handle it with a touch of that marvelous French charm and expertise, and very little interference from me! I'm a cook, specifically a baker. but Chef Aless is a master, and everything was delivered expeditiously and promptly. And with heart... A truly wonderful experience. Thank you so much Alessandra. Everything was perfect. Alana showed up early and even though she had to park in a fire hydrant stayed until I arrived to greet me and make sure everything looked great. Catering was for private concert for 26 Upper East Side parents and everyone was blown away by the food and even commented on how great it looked and how good she did incorporating some vegetarian options. Will definitely reach out to Alana in the future for events both intimate and large.

Chef Greg and his team did an excellent job setting up and catering yummy foods at my wedding. Greg is very passionate in cooking... you will know it after you try his food. All my guests are still raving about the foods served that day especially the fish, braised beef polenta, and oxtail. The foods were not only delicious but also, illustrated remarkable artistic culinary skills. Stephanie was great in handling all the logistic parts, love the decor and end-result of the wedding venue. It was simply beautiful and elegant. Thank you for making my wedding day extra special!

Flawless, beautiful and delicious. We cannot recommend Peter enough! First of all, the food was REALLY good ... I mean Jean-Georges yummy - not just tasty, but unreal good! Secondly, the presentation was visually stunning: striking - and he brought flowers, candles, striking serving platters and each course was served on a different and interesting plate. The execution was fantastic. Peter's charming assistant passed food. It made the entire evening drama free and allowed us to focus on our guests. Pulling the menu together was easy, Peter's suggestions were fantastic and he adapted to our requests without any problem. We had four different guests comment on how good the catering was ... Peter brought five cards and ran out! Last but not least, Peter was a delight to work with .... would we use him again.... without question. Thank you Peter. Thank you Thumbtack for bringing him to us.

Here are some highlights that stuck out: gave advice about all kinds of things leading up to the big day- rehearsal dinner location, invitations, wedding games; really listened to what we like & tailored her suggestions accordingly; was patient with us when we were indecisive; gave us a lot of guidance during the rehearsal; stayed all the way through the end of the night and packed up our parents' cars. One of her major "deliverables" is an awesomely detailed schedule of events! This was a huge asset for us. She was also extremely attentive & helpful! She was direct but not bossy- exactly what we were hoping for. I would definitely recommend her to any brides who need some guidance!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
