"This was the best food!" EVERYONE Ellen catered to for our dinner last evening could not get over how delicious their meals were. There are not enough words of gratitude I can share with her or any of you who are considering to hire her for your event. Ellen is concise when reaching out with her menus, her menus are organized by cuisine (making it easy to discuss), her response time is excellent, there are no hidden last minute charges, she shows up at the agreed time, is able to work in a challenging kitchen (we are in an office with a no flame policy and she made do with sternos), her food presentation is attractive and appetizing, and she is an absolute gem to work with. I have been in the food and beverage industry for 20 years, worked with many many chefs and Ellen is the real deal. Our group was falling behind and dinner service was delayed by close to 45 minutes. She made sure the main courses were still hot and of the best integrity, which is difficult to do when serving poultry and fish. Everything was seasoned beautifully with a variety of flavors with each course. Truly, the whole experience was magical and I can't wait to work with her again. Thank you so much Ellen!

Chris assisted me with my wedding catering - on top of being such an extremely talented chef, he is so knowledgable about food & catering logistics. I have also eaten at many of the restaurants he has cooked at - amazing! So lucky to know a chef like him.

Chef Lauren and her team were an absolute pleasure to work with. They were very organized, showed up on time and their setup and clean up were flawless. But most importantly the food was delicious, our guests loved it and kept asking for more. The seasonal ingredients were fresh and the menu very inventive with many delicious options to choose from. A special compliment goes out to their bartending services (Bob) who not only made the full assortment of mixed drinks and cocktails, but also made sure noone's glass was ever empty. Highly recommend and would definitely use again! Thank you, Chef Lauren.

Adolfo is extremely professional and likable, he listened carefully to our brief and he delivered everything we had asked for. Our brunch menu was perfect in the amount of food, the selection and the presentation. The best part, Adolfo left our kitchen spotlessly clean! Thanks Adolfo, look forward to working with you again.

We had a wonderful time at our group cooking class at La Pulperia. Chef Carlos and his team were so gracious (accommodating of food allergies) and the food was delicious - empanadas, salmon tartar, guacamole and ricotta gnocchi (which we learned how to make). We enjoyed making one of their signature cocktails and sipped wine (and tequila). Thanks to Chef Carlos and everyone at La Pulperia for such a fun and unique time. Also, thanks so much to Tyler for setting everything up!

Chef Melissa taught a cooking class for myself and 4 friends. She was very fun and informed us on proper cutting technique. We had a lot of allergies/food restrictions and Melissa was very easy to work with regarding these. Her recipes were healthy and delicious! Our menu included Sweet Potato Fritattas, Cod w/ Mango Salsa, Baked breaded artichoke hearts and Almond Butter Cups. We had a great time and would highly recommend her!

5 + Stars. Peter is an exceptional talented and skilled chef. His food and presentation are impeccable and he is lovely to work with. He prepared a unique Texas themed menu and the Texans said it was the best brisket they've ever had--that is a true compliment. Thank you Peter--Susan C.

Chef Tara did not disappoint. Apps were creative, hot and delicious. Main course was surf and turf, and although the surf seemed a bit on the small side the flavors were spot on. The turf was like "buddah". Our only hitch was the table side service, I had to get up to provide the water to our table twice and refill the wine glasses. That would not stop me from rehiring her. Food was great, and this is an easy fix. You cant really fix a bad food exp...which we did NOT have. Ask her for the dates with hot italian sausage wrapped in bacon....TO DIE FOR if you are a savory kind of person.

I hired Chef Doris Worthington and her team at "Now That Was A Great Party" to cater my sister's 75th surprise birthday party on Sunday, April 9, 2017. It was by far the best decision I could have made. I found their catering service through Thumb Tack, and took a chance to use the service, because all the coordination had to be done long distance; by telephone, text and Email. This catering service is Top Notch. They lived up to their word and their website advertisement. They were very professional and knowledgable about their customer's catering needs. Doris was able to offer several suggestions which helped to enhance the success of our party. Every detail was perfectly coordinated by the Caterer; from the table displays (which were beautiful), to the choice of colors to blend in with our color scheme; to perfecto food choices. The food was absolutely delicious. My sister was totally surprised and most pleased with the service and the food. We could not have asked for better service. We are very grateful to Chef Doris and her team at "Now That Was A Great Party". They certainly lived up to the business name. We had a great time and would not hesitate to use them again, and refer their service to others.

The chefs are most accomodating to my dietary needs all the while making me feel like I'm not missing out on the foods I love. I was served a delicious and completely Vegan Mexican inspired dip that was seasoned perfectly and was creamy and "meaty". Their food was amazing!

JP catered a party for us of about 40 adults and 20 kids and we had a great experience working with him - highly recommend his services! He was responsive and flexible during the planning phase, able to modify his gameplan day-of when our rooftop venue got rained out :( and prepped and served the food efficiently, beautifully and notably, without needing anything from us as hosts, letting us truly enjoy the party. On top of all that, all the guests loved the food itself and several have inquired about contacting JP for their own events. I’m happy to make those connections because JP is truly a great chef and a consummate professional!

After vetting several chefs, I knew once I spoke to Germaine that she was the one I would hire. Her positive energy, patience, and level of professionalism were amazing. She held a private tasting for my husband and I at her home and it was clear how much time she put into not just preparing a great meal, but the overall presentation. Needless to stay my event was amazing, the food was delicious as was the service. I would highly recommend Germaine and will most certainly be hiring her again for any of my future events!

Baar baar is a great place for contemporary Indian food . Its one of the best Indian restaurants I have been to! A lot of thought and creativity has been put in to make dining at baar baar a memorable experience . The food is not only delicious, but also a visual treat . Chef Sujan Sarkar is truly an artist when it comes to transforming each dish into a masterpiece. I would definetly go back again baar baar!

Chef Maria was fantastic. We hired her at the very last minute, and she still provided exactly what we wanted for a 30 person party. All of the ingredients were of the highest quality, and her preparation and cooking were great! I would highly recommend her services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How much should catering cost for a wedding?

The cost of wedding catering will reflect the level of service, the menu you choose, the luxury you desire and the number of guests you invite. Where you live also plays a major role in your wedding catering costs. The regional cost to do business and local cost of food will affect your catering bill. There is no set price for wedding catering, because each wedding and each menu is different. This is why many caterers provide a per-person price. This allows you to break down what it costs to feed each person based on the menu you want. Working with your caterer, you can adjust menu items, service level and more to accommodate your budget and guest count. Keep in mind that wedding catering costs are not just for the food. The bill reflects all the components that go into commercial food catering: a commercial kitchen, ingredients, staff, insurance, marketing and more. Here are some examples of average costs:

  • Three-course plated meal, moderately upscale, for 125 in Los Angeles: $14,000. Because of staffing costs, a true plated meal costs about twice as much as a staff-assisted buffet.
  • Buffet meal, standard menu, for 100 in Los Angeles: $5,000.
  • Per-person cost for hors d'oeuvres, dinner and nonalcoholic beverages: $24–$37, depending on menu selection, in Southern California.
  • Drop off prepared food for 50: $1,000 in North Carolina. Price does not include any service, setup or breakdown.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
