I am planning a trip to Japan countryside and I thought knowing how to speak Japanese would make my trip more enjoyable. After three weeks of using Japanesepod101.com to learn the basics, I met Matsumura Sensei to practice oral conversation. Over a period of 1 week, we met intensively over 3 sessions. She fixed my pronunciation and we practiced different scenarios. We role-played different conversations from Japanesepod101: ordering food, getting train tickets, asking for directions, etc. She tried to force me to speak Japanese by minimizing the use of English, which was very helpful. After the lessons, I tried out my new language skill at my favorite lower East Side ramen place called Minca and a Japanese curry place called Mimi & Coco. I had no problem ordering food and the staff were very happy I spoke to them in Japanese. The lessons were very valuable. Of course, I had only been taking Japanese for 4 weeks and I skipped a lot of the basics to focus on the practical (e.g. I know how to order a cheeseburger with no onion, but I still don't know the word for a fireman). Nonetheless, her lessons made me feel confident that I will be able to manage in Japan countryside without using Google translate too much.

Akiha has been very supportive in her Japanese lessons. She has a very flexible schedule and is very willing to work with you and match her lessons with your personal style of learning. She is very patient and strives to meet the students' needs during each lesson. Because of her help I have been rapidly progressing towards my goal of becoming fluent. Hiro is an excellent online teacher! The textbook he chose is easy to follow and he is able to adapt perfectly to your pace. Originally from Kyoto, he is very knowledgeable about what words and phrases are outdated and will let you know what Japanese people actually use nowadays. After learning from Hiro from only 6 months, I was able to use basic Japanese quite often on my trip to Tokyo. He was sure to focus on how I pronounced everything and sure enough, everyone understood me! I couldn't be happier with my lessons and will be referring anyone looking for an online Japanese tutor to him. :)

Look no further! I enjoy my time with my new friend & teacher...and it goes way to fast. The best discovery is just how much language depends on culture.

Junichi's a great tutor! I started learning Japanese from him only 5 months ago and have pretty much mastered the basics of Japanese grammar already. He is also genuinely concerned with the progress of his student, and is interested in teaching not just the language itself, but fun things about Japanese culture as well. All in all my learning experience with him was a positive one and would definitely recommend him to anyone interested in learning Japanese.

    About

I am an individual with a very unusual linguistic and cultural background. I grew up in NJ amid a rustic form of Venetian spoken at home and first brought to the Bronx by maternal grandparents, who are Italian immigrants. My grandmother has inspired my love of both Italy and the peninsula's rich tapestry of regional cultures. I received a prestigious Fulbright Fellowship to study dialectology at the University of Venice in 2006-2007. After that very fruitful and memorable year of linguistic and cultural dialogue, I went on to graduate study at the University of Chicago, where, even in an Introductory Italian course, I was able to reach all my students with Italy's very diverse history.

    About

Most teachers, like me, are professional musicians who supplement their income by giving lessons. However: I genuinely love teaching and would happily do it even if I didn't need the money. My students can see the passion and excitement I have for my work, and that does wonders in their ability to learn and develop. It is one thing to play an instrument well, but it is another thing entirely to know how to teach it well.

    About

Fluent City classes are geared towards learning, but we also make sure that the process is super fun. Our energetic and approachable teachers create a relaxed environment for you to take on the challenge of learning a language alongside like-minded people. There is a huge difference between knowing how to speak a language and knowing how to teach it, and we pride ourselves on hiring teachers who are ridiculously good at what they do: explaining how the language works and getting you to speak it immediately. Our beginner classes are usually taught by non-native speakers…on purpose! They are often Americans who learned the language themselves as adults. Our teachers understand, firsthand, everything that goes into learning a language because they were once students of the language themselves, which informs the very way they explain how it works to you. Native speakers or teachers with native-level fluency usually teach our higher-level classes.
