Great!! Jason came within a couple of hours and had the issue fixed within 20 minutes. While he was here, he also installed a remote transmitter for our ceiling fan. We will absolutely have him again for any electrical/plumbing issues. Highly Recommended :)

Hi my name is Jennifer, my husband & I live in a 2 story house in the Bronx. We used Joseph's services for plumbing issues we were having. Our bathroom sink was leaking water & our hot water was not working. We had Joseph come over to checkout the problem & he was very understanding about the severity of our situation. We have two kids so we needed our sink & especially our hot water working asap. Joseph was able to figure out the problem quickly. After he figured out that there was a cracked pipe under the sink & a faulty thermocouple in our hot water heater, he explained to us the procedure necessary. He sounded very familiar with these type of situations. He told us he runs into these problems quite often. My husband and I felt confident in giving him the job. Joseph was very pleasant, professional & very considerate of our property, he made sure that nothing got dirty or damaged. He even told a few silly jokes that had our children laughing. We would definitely recommend his services to others.

It was our luck to find Jorge and hire him for our several plumbing jobs. He responded my requests promptly and followed up very well. He came for the estimation for the works with a short notice from us. After we showed him our problem areas, he pinpointed the causes right away, and gave us an acceptable quote. We actually accepted the quote without countering. He initially asked us to order the parts, but he adjusted to what we felt comfortable, and ordered the parts for us. From he performed the estimation to he actually worked on the jobs, it was less than a week. He also delivered clean and neat results. We are very happy with what he changed or installed. A job well done.

We needed a plumbing repair late Sunday afternoon at my parents home (60 year old house with original copper plumbing). They had found water on the floor of their finished basement. It was not gushing, but a steady drip. We shut off the water to the house. Matt responded quickly through Thumbtack, and was at the house within a couple hours. It was a cracked fitting, which he repaired. Price was reasonable, he was professional and we will use him again. He also called the next day for follow-up.

Arrived early; stayed beyond the expected work time to complete the job. His main objective proved to be quality of his work; time is secondary. As a rule owners of business do not get tipped (only employees get tipped). Owners work in anticipation of profits, whereas employees work in anticipation of wages. Tipping an owner is suppose to be an insult to the owner. But I don't adhere to that. If the man does an admirable job I express myself in a way that benefits his pockets as well as by words. He low-balls his rates; I would definitely pad the price he quotes. He very conscientious and thorough. He double-checks his work before he leaves. I can tell he leaves happy about the work he's done, as I am. His work is professional and reliable. He is a very personable individual. I enjoyed his visit and watching him work. What's more he involves you in his work, answering any questions you have, and takes you step-by-step through the process. He worked on a 30-year-old refrigerator and resolved major issues on it, ones the manufacturer did not dare to attempt. Need I say more? If you need a plumbing get this man; request Appliance Repair.

My partner and I just moved to NJ from NC and had quite a bit of repairs and upgrades we needed to complete on the new home we purchased. One such upgrade was venting the dryer. This home was built in 1892 so needless to say, the original architectural plan did not include a dryer. The previous owners installed a gas line - but where the gas line had to run to attach to the kitchen stove, made for a really poor location in the basement in regards to venting the dryer. Before Nick came, he let me know a price for a best case scenario, which I appreciated because had he named a price over my budget, it would have given us both the opportunity to cancel the estimate so as not to waste time. Nick arrived on-time for the estimate and at first it was pretty tricky to find a solution for venting the dryer without completely tearing up the ceiling and walls. Nick was persistent in finding though and was able to devise a plan of going through an old nonfunctional window that was hidden and covered. I hired him to complete the dryer venting and also uncap the gas line and install a hose in preparation for the dryer installation. On the day of the project, Nick arrived on time (7:30am on a Saturday) It took him about 2.5 hours to complete everything. He did a fantastic job. One strength I want to highlight is that Nick not only gets the job done, and does it well, but also takes pride in the aesthetics of his work. He could have easily vented the dryer in a way that exposed the pipe all the way along the ceiling and through the window, but instead he figured out a way to fish it under the sheet rock for a cleaner look. He also cleaned his work space completely - which I have found to be rare for contractors in this area. I have had many contractors who were ready to walk out the door without cleaning up their mess and would have done so had I not asked them to clean up before they go. I also want to highlight that I had a sewage pipe issue in the basement prior to his dryer venting project. Nick also does plumbing so I called him at 4pm and he was at my house by 8pm. People who who have hired folks for sewage pipe leaks know that cleaning up the sewage is not part of the job. Nick was willing to clean and sanitize on top of snaking the pipes and clearing them of clogs for a reasonable price. Nick has been great to work with and does great work. I have already hired him to take care of some other projects around the house (installing a shower door, clearing debris in the backyard). Glad we found a go-to handyman for our new home!

David has been able to resolve and repair plumbing issues a few times in my home. My garbage disposal was put in by my non-plumbing husband and needed to be reset. David has made it look incredibly easy. Recently, he saved an upstairs bathroom floor, another job done by my husband. The wax seal had broken down on a 3 year old toilet. David is an expert at his craft and was able to troubleshoot in under 10 minutes, set the floor to dry overnight, and returned promptly the next evening as scheduled to finish the re-install. He was quick and efficient. You're not going to find a more knowledgeable or honest plumber in the area, in my opinion. He is worth the cost and peace of mind.

I had two tubs in adjacent bathrooms with faulty faucets, which leaked and were very hard to open and close. Two prior plumbers had tried to fix this, neither had done it well. The second had said I needed to replace the entire assemblies. Also I had noticed a leak from the upstairs neighbor which seemed to be from his tub drain. The same plumber had said he would have to replace the entire tub drain assembly. Also they would have had to break the tile and I would have had to find someone else to do the new tile work. Manuel gave me a good quote, he had good reviews, and he could do both the plumbing and the tile, so I decided to try him out. I could not be happier! First, he told me he had to come out for a quote, and he came at the exact time he said he would (that's a first for any contractor in my experience). He gave me a reasonable quote, and was able to start the two-day project only a few days later. He came as promised on a Friday and Saturday. After carefully cutting the tile out of the wall in the first bathroom, he started to explore the situation and soon realized that there was no real need to replace the entire assembly, but instead suggested replacing all the gaskets, and in some cases replace the bodies of individual faucets when they were in bad shape. He said there really had been no reason to cut a hole in the wall, but at least we got to check inside to make sure there were no other problems. He also cut into the ceiling and found where my neighbor's tub was leaking. In the end because he did not need to do as much work he ended up fixing both sets of tub faucets AND the upstairs leak for slightly less than he had quoted me for the tubs alone. And he was able to put the original tile back - you'd never know it had been taken out. The next time I need anything done, I will be calling Manuel for sure!

We hired Gio and Benny twice since buying and renovating our 3-bed apartment. They did an excellent job with everything and are very careful and thorough with all their installations. They were also thoughtful in putting drop clothes down on our new wood floors before working, and they carefully checked all their work (cycled machines) before moving on. They first cut and re-fitted the gas pipe to our new slide-in oven range, which now hugs our counter and backsplash without any gaps. They then installed our new Delta faucet, InSinkerstor garbage disposer, and Bosch dishwasher, and they checked to make sure my water line on our new Samsung fridge was secure. Lastly, they installed our new washer and dryer. The washer needed it’s own electrical outlet because the previous w/d was all one unit running off of an existing 220 service, so they installed a new outlet for just the washer (110) and also installed the 4-prong plug and wire to the new dryer (220). It was great that they were willing and capable of installing the GFCI electrical outlet - some plumbers might have told me to hire an electrician, but instead they did it per code and did not charge me much extra. They also fixed a broken PVC air pipe on the waste line for the washer, hooked up hot/cold and waste hoses securely, and installed / connected a new aluminum duct for dryer’s exhaust. All for one very reasonable price with no surprises (I checked with a friend who is a plumber in Virginia - price was reasonable). They even checked and balanced the washer machine during spin cycle (new machines will shake / vibrate if not properly balanced). Again, they did an amazing job, and they are nice guys who are very professional. We plan to hire them again when we renovate our bathroom. I highly recommend them for your next plumbing project!

Laszlo is very highly recommended as he was fast, responsive, precise and honest. I posted on Thumbtack about our leaky toilet around 2pm and he stopped by at 5pm that same day! He didn't have the part on him but came back and everything we fixed by 6pm. Our toilet has never worked better!! He's also very honest--we overpaid him, he let us know and returned the extra money. We would, without hesitation, work with him again.

It is my pleasure to recommend the excellent work of Rick Doggett who was the general contractor for a remodeling project of my apartment in Jersey City. From the initial interaction and proposal phase through construction and the timely completion of the job, Rick and his crew performed at the highest level of professionalism, work ethics, and dedication. The work involved a complete re-structure of the internal floor plan, moving walls, installing new fixtures, hardwood floor and carpet, electrical, plumbing, and painting, while communicating with an owner who was not on location. I would, with no hesitation, engage Rick in any future construction or remodeling that will come-up. Thank you Rick and crew for a wonderful job.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

  • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
  • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
  • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
