Law is great, and I would recommend him to anyone looking for a personal trainer! I started training with him after my second child. I was feeling soft, deflated, and weak, low energy. I had never worked out before. Law was great at teaching and encouraging, and even pushing—but all without being intimidating. He helped me to feel empowered. And his methods definitely work! I saw results within a month of working out with him 1-2 a week.

I have nothing but positives to say about my experience thus far. Ethan performed an initial fitness assessment as the basis for a comprehensive fitness program which includes resistance, metabolic, HIIT (high intensity interval training) and HIRT (high intensity resistance training) based on my primary objectives for weight loss and improved body composition. He re-evaluates and changes up the circuits regularly to keep things challenging and the body guessing. Six months later, I am down 20 lbs and double-digits in inches. He is personable, knowledgeable, dedicated and thorough. He has been one of the best investments of time and money I have ever spent. If you follow his recommendations, you will see results. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

Lalo is a pleasure to work with! I really didn't have a specific goal going into our complimentary consultation session, other than I just "wanted to be more healthy." We started on a 3x-a-week meeting schedule and he had a suggested meal plan ready for me by my first session. This was VERY helpful. When I put the meal plan into my daily lifestyle, coupled with Lalo's personal training sessions, after 4 months I have dropped 30+ lbs, taken more than 10% of my body fat away, and feel better than I ever remember when I was in high school (I'm a 37 y/o male). I am MORE than pleased with these results, but what is even better is that I feel like I really have a grasp on how to live a healthy lifestyle...for life! Lalo also intuitively knows the perfect balance of being friendly and keeping the atmosphere light while still knowing the right words and tones to make sure you're "staying on task" in terms of eating right and exercising away from the training session times. Five-stars - I would recommend him to anyone at any fitness or age level!

Jim is an absolute professional when it comes to physical training. Although I'm only three weeks into our program, the quality of training I've already received has led to tremendous gains in my physical stamina, strength, self-confidence and overall health. His expertise allow him to work with all levels regardless of where one might be upon starting, and his routines are diverse, effective, and above all fun. And while he's certainly in the business of putting your training at the top, his relaxed and generous manner make getting through workouts a pleasure. For those looking for a quick fix to their health, stick to your average diet books and ellipticals, but if you're ready for a transformative personal training fitness, Jim's the guy your looking for. The only thing stopping you, is you!

When I first was started my search for a personal trainer I was immediately drawn to body by hunter. Just from searching through countless profiles and reading other trainers I could tell immediately that body by hunter was the choice for me. With Hunters long impressive resumé, it was most certain the best “bang for my buck.” In first contacting Body by Hunter, he responded promptly and directed me to fill out the fitness profile on BodybyHunter.com after completing the fitness profile of my self, he immediately got back to me about my current level of fitness. One of my main goals was to lose a lot of body fat that I had gained in my first year of college and after taking a year off lifting, also on of my biggest health concerns was that I was smoking a 1 pack to 1 1/2 packs of cigarettes a day, along with my unhealthy eating choices of fast food, junk food, etc... Now that I have been training with hunter for only a month I am no longer smoking, nor having craving after my intense, but very rewarding workouts, along with the supplement he recommended I have fixed my poor dietary choices. I was at 200-205 pounds when starting with Hunter, now after a month I have dropped to 185 while losing fat and gaining muscle. With Hunters positivity, he gets me looking forward to my workouts instead of dreading the gym. Also he is so flexible with my crazy schedule he always caters to my scheduling needs. Hunter comes nothing but highly recommended from me!

In a personal trainer I was searching for a cross between Jillian Micheals and Bob Harper, I was lucky to that with Knox Pilkerton. Knox is passionate about health and fitness, he's committed to making sure his clients reach their fitness goals. He reminds me each session that 80% of reaching my weight loss goals is attributed to what I choose to consume daily. He has a wealth of knowledge about fitness and nutrition and he's always happy to share meaningful tips and ideas with his clients. I have been throughly satisfied with my decision to get fit and healthy under the guidance of Pilkerton training.

It is obvious from the first meeting that Samantha has a true skill set and passion for what she does. She is able to navigate a variety of needs for both Female and Male clients, regardless of skill and health. The wife and I came to her with very different goals and problem areas; her ability to tailor our individual workouts for maximum results is a testament to her training and experience. She is always able to accommodate my hectic work schedule and every time we meet I feel I am being exposed to new ways of working out the same muscle groups. There is never a feeling of repetition and she has a unique ability to keep you motivated when it counts the most. If you are looking for consistent measurable progress; from a certified, trained professional we highly recommend Samantha. Brian Fisher

Megan has been my personal trainer for over 3 years now! I sought out a trainer in March 2014 when I moved to Nashville and wanted to get in shape for my sisters wedding. At the time she was working at a gym in my neighborhood where I was paired with her. I immediately felt comfortable with her, and she tailored each workout to my goals. After my sisters wedding, I kept working with her. She got me in shape for my own wedding a year later. That was almost 2 years ago now and I still see her. As my goals shifted so did our workouts. She is kind and inspiring. Incredibly smart and hardworking. I had worked with many other personal trainers when I lived in Los Angeles and Megan is by far the best I have ever had. I never get bored and she is a pleasure to talk to. I would recommend her to anyone!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What should you wear to kickboxing?

What you wear to kickboxing can vary based on the setting. For kickboxing group fitness classes that are part of a gym’s cardio class schedule, standard fitness attire is appropriate. Athletic sneakers, pants or shorts that you can comfortably kick in without getting tangled or flashing anyone, and a top that allows for easy movement when punching and jabbing are all good choices. You won’t need protective gear or gloves, as most cardio-based kickboxing classes do not use punching bags.

Kickboxing training that takes place at a martial arts studio typically requires protective gear. You may need boxing gloves (beginners may want 12-ounce or heavier gloves for more cushioning) and hand wraps that protect and support your hands under the gloves while you punch the bag. If your kickboxing training includes sparring with opponents, you’ll need a mouthguard and any protective head and body gear your studio requires. Always be sure to bring plenty of water, too.

What is a boot camp class?

Fitness boot camps are a heart-pounding way to boost your fitness level. Boot camps are led by a fitness instructor and are based on the concept of military boot camps — intensive workout programs to get new recruits into shape, quickly. Fitness boot camps encourage camaraderie, and the group momentum helps participants get through fast-paced intervals of cardio, isometric training, strength training and endurance drills. Classes may range anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes, and usually meet multiple days per week. Boot camps often run a specific duration of time, say four to six weeks, which creates a team-like environment for class members. Other boot camps run year-round and students purchase package pricing for classes, similar to subscriptions that allow them a set amount of classes per week or per month.

Boot camps can be held indoors at a gym, outdoors in a park or on a beach, in a backyard — anywhere there’s room for running, jumping and sweating. Some instructors also provide DVD and online boot camps. You can also find boot camps tailored to your heart’s desire, such as bikini boot camp, or boot camps for new mothers. Boot camps offer an intense workout and are usually led by energetic instructors pushing you to do your best, but unlike military boot camp drill sergeants, fitness boot camp instructors typically don’t use intimidation or punishment to spur you on. Check with your doctor before starting a boot camp if you have health concerns, and always let your instructor know ahead of time if you have injuries.

Is kickboxing hard?

Kickboxing is as intense a workout as you want it to be. As with any fitness regimen, the more effort you put in, the more results you will get. The type of kickboxing you do will determine how physically challenging it is. Combat or self-defense kickboxing, where you train in a martial arts studio with sandbags or spar against combat partners, can be an intense physical workout. Group kickboxing classes that use sandbags as part of the workout will also elevate the degree of intensity, because of the level of exertion punching and kicking the bag requires. Cardio kickboxing group fitness, which employ kicking and punching moves but no sandbags, has comparable intensity to jogging but works a wider range of muscles while increasing strength, flexibility and coordination. Here are some of the core kickboxing moves:

  • Cross: A straight punch that you throw slightly across your body, using your dominant hand.
  • Jab: A quick, straight, face punch. Usually thrown with the non-dominant hand.
  • Uppercut: A punch thrown up from the midsection (using either hand) that connects with the underside of your opponent’s chin.
  • Hook: A curved punch (using either hand) that connects with your competitor’s jaw or chin.
  • Side kick: A kick delivered when your competitor is at an angle to you. Raise your leg to the side, then bend at the knee to deliver the kick.
  • Front kick: A kick delivered straight on while you are facing your opponent.
  • Roundhouse kick: A kick delivered by swinging a leg up in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion (depending on which leg you’re using) with momentum to strike the opponent with the instep of the foot.

What do you need for kickboxing?

What you need to bring to kickboxing depends on where you are working out and what your goals are. For a gym or fitness club’s cardio-based group kickboxing class that does not use punching bags, you generally need only appropriate workout gear and enough water. For kickboxers who are training in a martial arts studio, working one-on-one with a trainer toward a specific goal or sparring with competitors, you will need your own boxing gloves (12- to 16-ounce gloves provide more protection for beginners) and hand wraps (to protect and support your hands under the gloves, as well as keep them dry). If your lessons are in a martial arts studio, you may not be permitted to wear shoes, so bring clean socks if you don’t like to go barefoot. If your training includes sparring, you may be required to wear a mouthguard and/or protective headgear. Whether you’re in a group fitness class or hardcore training session, bring a sweat towel for your comfort and the comfort of people around you.

How much is a boot camp?

The cost of fitness boot camps depends on how often you go, the package you are purchasing (or if you are paying a drop-in fee), the location of the bootcamp, the equipment the instructors provide, and the background and reputation of the instructor. Smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living typically have lower rates for boot camp services than big cities and regions with a higher cost of living. If you’re paying per class on a drop-in basis, expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $25 or more, depending on the region and the instructor. When you purchase a package of classes, typically the more you buy at one time, the cheaper each class is. The same boot camp class might be $20 for a drop-in student, $15 for a student who pays for 10 classes per month, and $10 for a student who pays for 30 classes a month. Studio space can also affect costs, so if your boot camp takes place in a high-end gym with top-of-the-line equipment, the prices will likely be higher than a class that meets in an outdoor space with limited or no equipment. Shop around to find the right type of boot camp class and the right instructor for you.
