Mike did an unbelievable job. He was very timely, was very honest with his pricing and was very professional. His main focus was ensuring quality work and did his due diligence to make sure each job was completed the right way. We had Mike mount a 65" tv using a huge mount. He was able to do so even though he found out the building had metal studs rather than wood studs (making it a tougher job). He also put up Elfa shelving behind my washer dryer and hung all of my artwork. I would recommend to anyone looking for a handyman

Angel did an excellent job on several different projects for us (repairing damaged hard wood floors; repairing crack in concrete wall in sunroom; hanging extremely heavy medicine cabinet). And he worked on New Years Day to get the job done! He was professional, courteous and punctual. I highly recommend Angel.

We hired Jon to replace our wooden 9 year old crumbling fence that had partially blown down from a storm. We got lots of quotes from big fencing companies and no one could come close to the price that Jon offered us. Jon's quote was about $10 cheaper per linear foot than the other companies could offer! Jon and his crew did a beautiful job on the fence. They even had to deal with connecting the fence to a large tree and they did it seamlessly. I am so happy that we had Jon and his crew come out to do our fence. They were able to finish the project in just three days and I hardly knew they were even there. The best part is, that rather than just take the old wood to the dump, they offered it to a few couples who needed the wood repair their fences/make crafts which is super environmentally friendly! I will definitely hire them in the future to do other projects around our house.

I had Tom do two flooring jobs for me. The first was a "quick and cheap" refinishing for a rental unit I own. His attention to detail despite the low cost bowled me over. So when it was time for my wife and I to remodel our house, he was a natural choice. We weren't disappointed in the slightest. My wife wanted a complex set of rosettes and borders-no problem. I HIGHLY recommend the work of this young man for any wood flooring work.

Ross Painting refinished my wood front door; they sanded the door down, and the door frame, put 2 coats of stain, and sealer for water & Uv Protection. They also repaired some scratches I had on some of the internal hard wood doors inside my home. They did an outstanding job in completion of repairs. MC Powell

Over all excellent experience, these guys were great. We had an old historic house that required some specialty work and they were able to do it no problem. Will use them again for more wood/restoration work around the property.

They did lots of various paint, drywall and ceiling patching at our house and did a great job with everything. Even patched some rotted wood around the exterior of our patio door which looks great now. Very trustworthy too! I would hire them again without a doubt.

Felipe and Jacob were very professional, always on time, and completed the project in a timely manner. They were tasked with fixing our 1 yr old frameless leaky shower and true to his word, it no longer leaks! His team had to tear the entire shower down to the wood frame and rebuild from scratch. I'd highly recommend Felipe and his team to anyone looking for a small to large bathroom renovation. The estimate received was fairly priced compared to the others we received. Thanks, Felipe! You have happy customers here!!

James was very nice. I did not purchase the matching stair caps that matched my living room floor and my stairs were previously carpeted and so each step was slightly different and he took the time to measure each step and customize each one. I would recommend James for any wood flooring needs and will hire for future projects.

Communication was excellent. Pictures were sent throughout the refinishing process. Steven and his coworker were at all times polite and professional. The furniture refinished was an antique dining room table and they sanded it dow to the wood and stained it. It looks like a brand new table. Sarah

I had hired Chris for my basement remodel. I'm located in Portland but I was told, Chris was here visiting family and had some extra time to complete a project while he was here. I've never used Thumbtack before but the quotes I was getting from local companies were just way too high to consider. Chris responded on the first day and helped walk me through the extensive amount of work needed that I was completely unaware of. His knowledge of the project and what was needed, seemed like he had experience and was able to walk me through it in a way I could understand. He was able to offer much better pricing than others because I had a very lean budget to work with. Chris did his very best to work with me even though I must have been a nightmare to work with, but Chris's was a champ. He built interior walls on a sloping floor, created a beautiful reclaimed wood wall and used the left over to build out a cedar closet for guest use. The bulk of the project was soundproofing my ceiling wit Rozul insulation and over 500 square feet of ceiling drywall and texture. It was a 2-week project from start to finish, a little longer than I had hoped, but I was happy with Chris because he was doing it all himself. I just wish he lived in Portland. I would hire him all the time. Super Impressive!

We used Matterhorn a few weeks ago and we couldn’t be happier with their work! They replaced rotten sub flooring in our upstairs, patched two large holes in our ceiling, installed wood flooring, repaired buckled tile in our kitchen, and installed five ceiling fans for us during the two days they were here. They were extremely professional and friendly. Nick and his crew worked very hard and I feel the really went above and beyond for us. I’m already ready to contact them for more jobs we have around the house that need to be done. We were very impressed and would highly recommend them.

He repaired/replaced major components of and wooden deck. He was responsive to suggestion that we recycle usable wood from the existing deck, the quality of the work is outstanding and it was completed in a timely manner and results are worth the cost of the project. We are delighted with the finished product.

James and his crew did an amazing job on the two bedrooms we needed done. I had originally wanted something else but he explained to me the pros and cons about it and then steered me in a direction that I never would have thought of and I love it! He installed wood-look tiles in my bedroom and it looks brilliant! The crew were on time and quick to finish. We will be using them again after my boys are old enough for nice floors in their rooms! Absolutely recommend!

Craig restored my 1924 violin, which had been discovered in an attic in complete disrepair. He's an expert at replacing small areas where wood had been damaged or nicked away. I am delighted with my violin and the sound is beautiful.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

  • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
  • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
    • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
  • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
    • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
  • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
    • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
  • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
    • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
    • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
    • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
      • Includes removal of the dura rock.
  • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

  • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
    • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
  • 620 square feet of maple floor:
    • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
    • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
      • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
