Thorough review- tasting and actual event. I had the pleasure of hiring Chef Roy for my first personal chef experience for my Wife and I's anniversary. Based on his great reviews and thorough quote response, I decided to request a tasting for his shrimp creole. Chef Roy arrived on time, professional, and seemed to love the art of cooking. I didn't think I would finish the generous sample tasting (free of charge BTW) but by the time we finished chatting, there was no more to take home! Fresh shrimp and vegetables. I hired him right on the spot and we began shaping the menu. I wanted my wife to have a little bit of everything, so I ordered his crab stuffed mushrooms, seafood gumbo, shrimp creole, and three desserts. The day of the event, Chef Roy arrived 1.5hr ahead of scheduled dinner time to prepare. He allowed us to have personal conversation while he prepared our meal which was great. As a complimentary thank you for our business, Chef Roy prepared boudin balls as an appetizer. Sooo good! Sadly, we didn't have room for desserprofessional! comment on that! We plan to eat it tomorrow :) He used gloves and lightly cleaned as he went along. Very personable, yet professional. Great experience!

Terri did an amazing job for our wedding! We discussed options to fit our budget and she did an awesome job working with our tastebuds. We had appetizers set up for cocktail hour and her Cajun chicken pasta and green beans and it was delicious! Everyone at the wedding raved about how much flavor the food had. She also supplied our gold chargers and table runners that went perfect with our color scheme. At the end of the night she packed up the leftovers and made sure we (the bride and groom) had to go plates for after the wedding munchies. She was punctual and was always easy to communicate with. Thank you for being a part of our wedding!

The professionalism and attentiveness of the Dine catering staff was excellent. We received positive feedback from clients on the menu offerings. The price was similar to other caterers but the menu was unique and well-received. We will definitely be hiring Dine Catering for future events.

We hired Kelli with Arcodoro after meeting several other caterers. She was well organized, personable and we felt that our wedding reception was her top priority, no matter how many other clients she may have had. She met us at our reception venue and asked us questions about what we wanted our day to be like and came up with so many ideas that we would have never thought of. From our first meeting we liked Kelli and felt very comfortable with her. She only had two months to put our reception together and never made us feel like that was an issue. She helped us come us with a menu that was varied and delicious and was beautifully presented! The chef made a fantastic pumpkin ravioli with a cream sauce that was the hit of our reception! Kelli and her staff went above and beyond in setting up our venue and making it look even more beautiful that we had imagined. They set up all of the tables from tablecloths to decor to the lighting of so many candles. Our cake table and guest book table were simply amazing and Kelli even took charge of setting up and arranging our cupcake cake because the cake vendor arrived too soon and the cake table was not ready yet. Our cake looked EXACTLY the way we wanted it, even though Kelli had only seen a picture of it one time. She was the go to person for all of our other vendors and she made us feel like we had nothing to worry about. The staff was awesome as well, and everyone with Arcodoro made sure that my bride and I were taken care of all evening! We truly felt like everything was under control and we were able to be the guests of honor at our reception. Kelli is not just a wedding caterer, she does it all...and makes it look effortless. That's the kind of service that I will recommend to everyone we know. Kelli, Thank you for everything you and your staff did to make our wedding day the best day ever for both of us! The venue looked fabulous, the food was great and all of our guests just raved about what a great time they had! We heard over and over that it was the best wedding reception they had ever been to. YOU ROCK and we can't thank you enough for going above and beyond for us and allowing us to enjoy our reception and guests without worrying about a thing! You provided us with personal service from start to finish and we won't hesitate to contact you again next time we need the level of service you offer. Mollie and Kimberlie Hines

Chef Keif and his help are very nice and eager. We were looking for a sophisticated catered diner party of appetizers and sides (more than $50 pp, with us providing 12 pounds of meats off the grill separately) for 25-30, and largely got what we were looking for. The food was abundant, perhaps twice what was needed but bit hit or miss on quality and taste. Tuna tacos, lamb, and crab cakes were just fabulous. But thin Pizza was too thick and chewy and bacon-wrapped shrimp didn't work at all. A couple other appetizers were just OK. Desserts were completely top notch. Overall, guests gave great reviews. Keif can be a good chef, you just need to work with him on exactly what you want, how you want it, how you want it to be displayed, and if you want the food carried around or stationary. Taste everything beforehand and work out all of the details.

We had the BEST engagement party ever, mainly due to the efficient planning and preparation done by Pamela and Vanessa. They set up the pianist, who was awesome, the caterer, who also was awesome, the wait staff, bartenders and florist. Everyone was dressed professionally and did their duties to the fullest. Pamela and Vanessa met all of my requests, and excelled in making everything go smoothly. She also provided all of the glassware and dishes, so no clean up for me! Our guests couldn't stop complimenting the whole arrangement. I will definitely use them again if the need arises, and highly recommend their services for any party. Thanks again Dream Events!

Chef Devown was great! We hired him to prepare a private dinner for 2 for a special anniversary. He was punctual, prepared, and so nice! The communication leading up to dinner was seamless and he helped customize a great menu. The dinner itself was great! We had three courses and each delicious. We were very happy with the end result and will definitely hire chef Devown again.

This was the 1st time I've ever had catering done for any of my events and I would like to say that I am not disappointed. Keiry was a professional from the moment that I started talking to her to the moment that she arrived to my house. The food was very delicious from the entrée to the side dishes and even the garlic bread. Everyone ate everything and before the night was over they were asking for more. All in all I am glad I chose Keiry and Mimi's catering to cater my event. Thank you Keiry and I will be using you again.

He came in with a team to prepare a special 5 course dinner with wine pairing for 10. It was amazing. I didn't really give any specifics other than allergies to seafood. He prepared a beautiful appetizer for us to have while socializing in the living area, then a starter, salad, main followed by dessert. Perfectly paired with various glasses of wine. It was the relaxing in home gourmet experience that we were looking for.

I had the pleasure of dining with M.A.M. Divine Dining for my boyfriend's birthday. Mark came to our hotel and served us a delicious and beautifully presented five course meal. The dishes varied in taste and style and were perfectly portioned. Every dish was amazing; my two favorite were the avocado toast and the teriyaki salmon salad. Chef Mark was kind, and professional. He allowed me to submit a list of food that my boyfriend and I enjoy, and created a menu that was perfect for our taste buds. He even brought complimentary wine. We had a blast! I highly recommend M.A.M. Divine Dining for catering, family dinners, date nights, etc. and I look forward to using Chef Mark again and again!

Best catering company around! We have not stopped hearing comments from our guests about how amazing our wedding food was. We couldn't be more thrilled with the quality of the service as well. The staff was very professional and served everyone quickly. Mike provided us with appetizers while we were taking photos outside and even brought some to our table too so we got plenty of food. We highly recommend the shrimp + grits as they were definitely the winner of the evening. Thanks again!!!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

    • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
    • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
    • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
    • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
    • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
