I worked with Mike to have some Christmas lights installed on our roof and around some tree trunks. Mike was stellar in his communication and his level of service is second to none. A very personable guy and more importantly, very detail oriented which is hard to come by these days. He truly treats the project as if it's his own home and now we're looking into other landscaping projects that I'll know he'll do a great job on. Highly recommend Mike and his crew!

Wonderful experience! We needed something as simple as getting plastic brackets off the roof line that were left on from Christmas lights. Able to schedule on our time and get it complete before HOA complained!

We were very happy with the results after Angel painted our single story house. He is an honest combination of quality and value. He met with us two or three times before we scheduled. He repaired, prepped (including pressure washing), and then painted. His prep was so thorough that two of my neighbors mentioned it. He did an excellent job with the exterior repairs, which included carpentry on the siding and roof soffits. The whole process took some time, a couple of weeks, due to spring storms and unexpected but necessary repairs (a storm-downed branch damaged the soffit) and it was worth it. Angel really takes his time to do it right, and has pride in his work. We took a chance hoping that the job quality would be worth the value, and there is no doubt that’s the case.

My experience with Dennis is limited to a roof repair, so I can't speak about his overall roofing expertise. But, in my experience as a long-term homeowner (of an old home), repairs are usually more annoying to contractors than a large re-roofing job,. So, if they're willing to take on a small repair and do it right, they'll do a good job of a new whole roof. Dennis not only diagnosed and fixed the problem correctly, he took care of other annoying and related problems that he discovered as a result of fixing the leak. He also consulted with me on a number of other issues he noticed, but was at no time trying to do a hard sell. He could have, as did other contractors, apparently, just fixed the leak and walked away from the other problem. Of course, he was completely honest with us about what he found, he was creative and timely with his problem-solving, and was affordable. Finding a contractor who is smart, honest and patient enough to figure out what the real problem is (there's always a problem in an old house) is a lucky break! I have no doubt that Dennis and his crew would do a great job on a new roof. And I know for sure he'll do a great job on repairs. We did have a slight problem with communication. We were both probably a little at fault in that regard. How, with so many ways to connect (email, phone, text), it gets harder for us all to reach one another, I can't figure out. But all's well that ends well. The communication problems were minor and on both sides and ultimately don't detract from my 5-star rating. Hire this guy!

My husband and I were introduced to Ruben's Handyman Service through our NextDoor Neighbor forum. On a ridiculously hot and humid summer day, Ruben got a Texas style workout, installing wood flooring in a large closet in our home. This Army veteran receives a 5-star rating for his service to our country and for his skillful workmanship! Nice job, Ruben!

They were friendly, polite, quick and knew what they were doing. After they got the old roof removed, more damage was found. They showed me the pieces they removed and fixed it up correctly. They even cleaned up all around afterwards. Looks great now!

I recently had My Friend's Roofing replace my roof, I'm excited with the finished product. Professionally across the board as far as the work, they worked within budget, and they know their product. That gave me options to work with them, I've never worked with an contractor with the same enthusiasm as My Friends Company.

He tore out my fireplace and sheet rocked and textured the new wall, he replaced my small porch poles with larger ones and found and repaired a leak on my roof. I would highly recommend Vic Searcy of Searcy Construction to anyone. His bid was very reasonable. He is a crew of 1 but works like 10 men. He does beautiful work and will come back and make it right if you are not happy. I say this because after he was done and paid out we primed the new wall and the seams seemed to pop out after we primed. This was not due to him making a mistake - it really could not be seen with the texture on the wall until the wall was primed. I texted him and told him about what happened and came out the next day to look at it and he repaired it within 2 days. This contractor does not leave you even after you have paid in full - HE WILL MAKE IT RIGHT! I understand the fear you may have about hiring a contractor but with Searcy Contruction your fears are unwarranted. I would hire again. In fact I would not seek any additional bids. He is trustworthy and will do a great job for you.

We recently used TUR Demolition & Construction for a back porch addition. We've never been happier with a service, and plan to use them for all our future home remodeling. It's a BBB Insured small family business. And within their family there doesn't seem to be anything they can't do. They did plumbing work, electrician work, custom cabinets, roofing, concrete. From the beginning stages, the communication was great and they were very flexible with me as we imagined what this porch would look like. They ended up delivering an even better product than I had imagined. The project was painless, they were consistent with their time every day and stayed and worked until they were in a good place for the next day. At the end of each day, they tidied up their tools and set them aside to keep the backyard clean. It was so nice working with the same people throughout the process. We've had work done in the past where the GC comes in, negotiates a contact, sends different crews day to day and checks in here and there. With this company you are working with the GC everyday. He's doing the work, alongside his team. I can't say enough about their quality work. You'll just have to give them a call and see for yourself :)

I live in Georgia but my house needed repairs in Texas. I hired M and Y because I had hail damage to my windows and I need to sell my (rental) house ASAP. They ended up painting the exterior of my house (3200 square feet), replacing rotted wood trim, and glazing my windows. It looks great!! Once I hired him online, they began working right away. They pressure washed the first day and let it dry. Within 2 days, the complete job was finished. They finished before I made it to Texas! I would definitely use this company again.

Cesar did an excellent job of installing gutters on my house. I worked installing gutters in Nebraska about 30 years ago and I thought I knew a lot about the process. Things have changed, this time for the better! Installation methods are much improved, I am glad I didn't try to do this job myself. Cesar didn't mind answering my questions and I found him to be very knowledgeable. I could tell that he took the time and put forth the effort to do a good job and I am very pleased with the result. I couldn't recommend him any more highly, it was a pleasure doing business with him.

Protech's pricing is very reasonable. I had them replace a fiberglass roof with a metal roof. They completed the job quickly and the quality of their workmanship is great. I will keep them in mind for future roofing needs.

I spoke to several contractors for an estimate on roof replacement after a hail storm in April. Rather than providing me with their estimates, they were all more interested in how much insurance proceeds we would receive for the damages. I called them "Vampire Roofers". To my surprise, John Sauer promptly sent me his detail line items estimate, references and insurance certificate as I requested. His pricing was excellent, references and credentials all vetted. The job was started and finished within the agreed time frame. His crew was professional and they worked hard to complete the job as promised. Going through this process I realized that even the builder didn't properly instal the roof (missing drip edges). John fixed that. These parts needed paint to match the house and even though his pricing did not include the painting, he offered to help us paint. I feel very fortunate to work with John. He is honest and true to his words which is extremely rare in the construction business. I have never engaged in any form of social blogging or review but felt compelled to do so in this case. I like to help John put all the other rip off artists out of business. I am very grateful to John and his crew for their service. Best to them.

Great company, the guys are hard working, fast and do great work. Over the years I've dealt with at least 15 to 20 contractors. Most of the time contractors have a tenancy to tell you they can do any job (even if they don't have experience in doing that kind of work) Strong Arms has a team of pros that actually can do difficult jobs. Daniel Salazar (CEO) makes sure that you are very happy with the work and if there is any touch up work it's done. Again I am pleasantly surprised to have A great contractor with a great crew That takes pride in their work. Daniel Salazar is also a very nice person (gentle giant) and very humble and easy to work with. Cary Home owner?

All of the above. Every phase was handled on time and as promised, phone calls were always returned. They not only did the metal roof but installed a new patio with some "remodeling" on the back of the house. Also did a great job in helping with insurance and then a reasonable bid. Always cleaned up every day. A special thanks to Dakota and Raul for a job well done. There is no question I would not only call them for another job but certainly recommend them to anyone.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

  • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
    • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
  • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
  • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
  • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
  • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
  • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
    • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
