After looking and talking with a host of trainers, I picked Lauren to help me train Sailor. He's a ACD Blueheeler and is typically smart and can be "Hard Headed". Lauren and Sailor hit it off first rattle out of the box and Sailor and I learned a lot. I have purchased many books on dog training, Lauren taught us things that the books never even mentioned. Sailor and I are looking forward to our next lessons here at home, with her. No "Doggy Boot Camp" for us!

Maury is extremely knowledgable when it comes to dog training. Not just a dog sitter! Give him a few minutes and ask about your dog's well-being. You will not be disappointed!

Stephanie was fantastic with Crown. He was a little nipping puppy that wanted to chew on everything AND everyone in the house before she came out for our 1st session and now he's a well behaved little boy (some of it is still a work in progress but the progress with only 3 sessions is INCREDIBLE). My husband and I decided to use Walk of Life Dog Training because of Stephanie's flexibility with our schedule - we both work long hours and don't always have congruent time off and Stephanie was willing to figure out a time that worked best for the both of us! Crown, our puppy, absolutely LOVED his time with her and it was amazing to see how expanding his mind through training was eliminating the unwanted behavior that we'd experienced prior to training with Stephanie. Additionally, she is so incredibly kind and just wants to make sure that your life with your dog is as happy as possible! We would absolutely recommend Stephanie and Walk of Life Dog Training to anyone that's interested in getting their dog trained - puppy or not, I know Stephanie can teach you some tricks and effectively address any concerns you have with your pup! Thanks a bunch!

Pamela provides personal, professional service that fits your schedule and needs. She trained our Havanese and he is a happy, better dog because of it. I can walk with him off leash and he will stay with me or on walks he never pulls his leash and follows simple commands. I highly recommend Positively Dog and Pamela Christy for your dog training needs.

With my job we travel a lot. I didn't need a full time dog nanny, but someone who could be there whenever I have to leave town or when we both have long work days. I have three dogs...they are not easy, one is on medication and the other two are hyper. Furbabies was able to find the perfect pet nannies for me. Medication is always administered on time, logged and they are able to run with the two high energy dogs. My husband and I appreciate their helping hand and I know Tamale, Max and Sophie are happy too.

Lauren is amazing! I let my dog Ivy get away with everything, which in turn made her a terror. To the point that I couldn't even get my brother to dog sit her when I needed. Luckily Lauren saved my dog and after training of both Ivy and myself, I now have a totally different dog. She is the most well behaved dog, I can actually take her for walks now and she listens and focuses on me even in situations that may be sensory overload for her. Thank you Lauren for saving my dog! I highly recommend Lauren!

I appreciate Brian's approach to dog training. He establishes a relationship with the dog to create a desire within the dog to want to please him. I also believe that takes time. Every other trainer I talked to only wanted the dog for two weeks, which in my opinion is not enough time to really teach a dog obedience. I have been visiting Brian and Harry once a week and I'm very pleased with Harry's progress. I'm also learning how to reinforce the training once Harry comes back home. Brian has been a pleasure to work with and a very competent trainer.

Having my dog is great. Training my dog on the other hand was another thing. Besides sit and stay I was at a loss for how to get him to stop jumping on people and just overall be more obedient to my commands. I found Murphy's paw through a friend who needed the same thing for their dog and got started right away. Ryan's training was immediately effective for both the dog and I. Within 3 training sessions my life with my dog had become so much easier and only became better from there. I knew that my dog would listen to me when the time came, I knew I was in complete control of any situation my dog and I would be in. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Beth was called to our house to help us with our rescue pit bull. She is a people person but most importantly she is knowledgeable trainer. Her philosophy on training meshed well with my family. She does not implemented dominance strategies which is unlike some other trainors here in the area. We want a family pet not an animal that fears us. I feel confident that with her helpful tips and training we will have the dog of our dreams. Our dog was abused prior to us having him. Already I see a significant improvement. I would strongly recommend her to anyone that has doggy behavior issues.

Ms. Jones watched my & my mother-in-law's dogs over the course of a ten day vaction. I had never used a pet sitting service before, but I had heard wonderful things about Ms. Jones and the care and attention she provided. We were not dissapointed! I checked in a couple times over the course of our vaction to find that our pooches were perfectly at home with her. She was following our care instructions and was spending ample time playing with our pups. We arrived at home to find our four-legged friends happy, healthy, and well taken care of. We will definitely be utlizing Ms. Jones in the future.

Ashley was great! We left our dog Hattie for two weeks. She was communicative throughout her stay, providing great updates on how Hattie was doing and it seems like Hattie had the best time. She also offered grooming services, so it was great to pick up a clean pup. Would highly recommend and plan to use North Dallas Pet Haus again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
