Chef Roy is low key and easy going. No drama. No hassle. He responded to my brief (a birthday dinner for 40-50 people doing Mexican food) specifically and didn't just send me some preprepared materials on what was on offer like some of the other chefs responding to the request. He came by the venue in advance to site check, then showed up on time and prepared. The food was just as ordered and delicious.

I had a themed event and Mason's Creative Catering (MCC) exceeded my expectations on food, creativity, and service. Kevin Mason is one of the most respectable chefs who takes into account the budget he is given to ensure that he, not only stays well within the budget, but also by creating such high quality, and tasty courses. It was my first experience with this company and I will definitely highly recommend to try MCC for your next event. ~Mia D. Taylor

Truly outstanding! Exceeded our high expectations. Mark is a credit to chefs everywhere. The special birthday dinner for my wife, family and friends was fantastic (the oo's and ah's from our guests at every course was telling). He tailored it perfectly to our request. The cost was also spot on to our stated budget. How he managed to do all of that was a marvel. A real pleasure listening to him explain as he cooked; encyclopedic knowledge of foods and cooking. His lovely assistant/wife, Louise, was just as special and kind in her service to all of us. I could not give a higher recommendation. These two are a rare find.

We hired Kelli with Arcodoro after meeting several other caterers. She was well organized, personable and we felt that our wedding reception was her top priority, no matter how many other clients she may have had. She met us at our reception venue and asked us questions about what we wanted our day to be like and came up with so many ideas that we would have never thought of. From our first meeting we liked Kelli and felt very comfortable with her. She only had two months to put our reception together and never made us feel like that was an issue. She helped us come us with a menu that was varied and delicious and was beautifully presented! The chef made a fantastic pumpkin ravioli with a cream sauce that was the hit of our reception! Kelli and her staff went above and beyond in setting up our venue and making it look even more beautiful that we had imagined. They set up all of the tables from tablecloths to decor to the lighting of so many candles. Our cake table and guest book table were simply amazing and Kelli even took charge of setting up and arranging our cupcake cake because the cake vendor arrived too soon and the cake table was not ready yet. Our cake looked EXACTLY the way we wanted it, even though Kelli had only seen a picture of it one time. She was the go to person for all of our other vendors and she made us feel like we had nothing to worry about. The staff was awesome as well, and everyone with Arcodoro made sure that my bride and I were taken care of all evening! We truly felt like everything was under control and we were able to be the guests of honor at our reception. Kelli is not just a wedding caterer, she does it all...and makes it look effortless. That's the kind of service that I will recommend to everyone we know. Kelli, Thank you for everything you and your staff did to make our wedding day the best day ever for both of us! The venue looked fabulous, the food was great and all of our guests just raved about what a great time they had! We heard over and over that it was the best wedding reception they had ever been to. YOU ROCK and we can't thank you enough for going above and beyond for us and allowing us to enjoy our reception and guests without worrying about a thing! You provided us with personal service from start to finish and we won't hesitate to contact you again next time we need the level of service you offer. Mollie and Kimberlie Hines

We were visiting town and had a VRBO rental house. I wanted to spend time with my kids and new grandbaby, instead of shopping and cooking, so I asked Chef DeVown to fix is several meals I could serve. He exceeded our expectations, delivering delicious, healthy (as requested) meals which everyone thoroughly enjoyed! I would not hesitate to use Chef for this or for an event! He did great, and was super nice and polite! The food was fabulous!

Met with Chef Joy yesterday for a Fajita tasting for our upcoming wedding in a few months! She was very professional, very polite, very kind and above all....had AMAZING food! My (soon to be) husband is a VERY picky eater. Especially when it comes to rice and meat and he had zero complaints on either. We booked that day and look forward to working with Chef Joy at Laniers Catering for our wedding in a few months!

EVERYONE at my daughter’s grad party was asking where did you find the Chef! All adults and high schoolers were very pleased with the food. Chef Paulo, did an outstanding job on our anniversary dinner! This specific location did not have an in house kitchen so be brought everything necessary to cook in front of us. His crab cakes was my absolute favorite part of the meal aside from the pasta made from scratch. He carried himself very professionally and I highly recommend him if your looking for a chef.

Chef T and Raven were wonderful. They worked closely with us on the menus. They brought samples for us to try and adjusted the menu to our liking. They were exceptionally organized when they arrived and provided everything required for the party (down to bringing their own dish soap so as not to use mine). They cleaned up as they went along and left my home in perfect condition. The food was delicious and a fun time was had by all.

THE BEST Jamaican food I've ever tasted!! Has such great flavors just thinking about it makes me excited. If I could only have her for my own personal chef I would. You guys haven't taste the island of Jamaica until you taste Island Breeze. I give her 10 stars she's so nice and so warm hearted and really puts her foot in it. Great job can't wait until we have you cater for us again. Until next time and I mean really soon.

Kelly is an amazing chef and very accommodating and dependable. Her passion for cuisine is evident in each meal. We used Kelly’s services for about 6 months on a weekly basis. She is kind, courteous and above all a talented chef! My husband and myself were on a very strict diet and her meal prep and delivery made it easy to follow and tasty! Kelly will be filling a hefty dessert order at our corporate Christmas party this December. If you’re looking for a talented chef that really cares about her craft and clientele...the search is over!

Chef Marcus catered my wedding 💒 a few months ago. The food was awesome. We had Prime rib served with a French onion and mushroom 🍄 sauce, herbal roasted chicken 🍗 served with creamy Alfredo and fettuccine. Wild rice 🍚 pilaf, rosemary finger ling potatoes 🍠, a vegetable medley, and garlic butter steamed broccoli. It was to die for. I would recommend you eat anything Chef Marcus cooks.

A lot of the food that I transfer from fork to mouth is not very impressive but this Chef dazzles me. Every dish created by her vanishes on your tongue leaving behind just a memory of transient happiness. Every ingredient used intertwines in creating the perfect symphony. For every occasion, whether intimate or a crowd, that "something" different is Chrispea's.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

    • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
    • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
    • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
    • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
    • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
    • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
