Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Contact single-item movers near you to find out what services they offer, and get free estimates.

Matthew was very courteous and professional. He handled my things like they were his own. I had only a small moving job, but unlike other movers, he worked with me to do my small job at a reasonable price. If you need a mover for any size job, you won't be disappointed in NorthernStar Moving.

The 3 men who were the movers did their work well. Yet the job should have been sized up in advance by company leadership. The load of furniture and supplies we had to move was too much for the one truck. A preview of the load by company foreman would have realized the error, it it didn't happen. Move was less than desirable as a result. Yet the movers worked diligently and with great effort to make move happen under the circumstances. A 3 out of 5 overall..

I can't say enough wonderful things about Samuel and EverReady Discount Movers! What a wonderful man he is! He came the very same day I needed something moved which was terrific. He was the most pleasant, polite, professional, happy person to deal with. He took very, very good care not to hit the walls and said that was something that was important to him, which I appreciated. What he moved for me was dusty and he even offered to dust it off for me! So sweet! His prices cannot be beat - half as much as bigger movers I got quotes from that charge a bunch of extra fees. So glad we met him and will definitely use him for any move we have in the future. Thanks Samuel!

Over the years I’ve had several professional movers both local and long distance. Family Moving personal, without a doubt, is among the best I’ve encountered. The head mover, Colton, who came with his able helper, took great care of wrapping the delicate dining room set in Blankets and plastic wrap we bought and had moved to our house. They took special care to secure it in their large company moving truck. I followed them to our home, and the took care to drive responsibly and at the posted speed limits. When they arrived, the fluidly carried our dinning room set into our home. They went beyond theCall of duty when we asked them to move our older furniture (we are giving to the Salvation Army) into another room and into the garage to make room for the new furniture. All their work was performed within the 2hr limit we contracted for, and the extra work they did, as well, Came in at the expected cost. This review would be incomplete if I stopped here without mentioning the office staff who worked with me to give me a estimated cost and set up the move on or near my requested move date. They were very courteous and helpful, and it was obvious to me they were quite knowledgeable in their craft. I know this review is probably long, but there are so many un-scrupulous People in the moving business, I was very pleasantly surprised to find one that didn’t try to rip you off or shortcut the work needed to do the job. We do not hesitate to recommend Family Mobbing to anyone.

5?'s+++ I needed a heavy entertainment center moved within a mile of my old place of residence, this obviously wouldn't take over an hours worth of work. I already did some research and saw most places charged by the hour. Romero was willing to take off an hour of service since my move was so small and wouldn't take over an hour to complete. I was ready for him to just toss it on the truck and get moving, but he made sure he used blankets to protect my items. I would recommend Castle Movers to anyone!! Thanks Guys!!!

The guys were very polite. They never stopped moving things, worked at a steady space. There are few marks on the walls but could not be helped. I would use them again. Very professional.

The worst moving experience of my life & this is saying something. Our move was to begin at 3:30 and it ended at midnight, let me just start there. It took them 8 1/2 hours to load and unload 5 items. The truck was completely empty for the first hour and a half, and we put the five items they needed to take to the side already with easy access. When we left the first location, my wife and I waited at the entrance of our cul de sac to see how long it would take them to pull out after us. The house was closed up, locked, and so was their truck when we left. They were even buckled in their seats. We called and the mover gave us the button. We waited for ten whole minutes before driving all the way to the end of the block and there they were. Right where we left them. They hadn’t moved an inch. 5 or 6 hrs into the move, he pees with the door open in front of my wife and daughters. After they “finished” unloading and leave our house at midnight (with our items not put back together), 30 minutes later, we see one man creeping to the front door. I guess he thought we were asleep or wouldn’t see him because as soon as he saw me see him walking to the door, he darted off to the side! He hadn’t called or texted to let us know he was coming back to my house nor that he had some of my item still in his possession. We still have items missing.

Perfect Finish is perfect in my book! They went above and beyond to fit me into their schedule with less than 24 hours notice. Throughout the move they were friendly and genuinely fun to be around. The price is beyond fair for the care and attention they give. I wholeheartedly recommend them!!!

They did handle my big items but were not very prepared. I guess it was lack of communication on both ends but I thought packing and moving meant boxing it up as well. I know the weather was also pretty ugly and that didn’t help the fact that everything felt rushed.
