Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does an electrician need to enter my home?

Whether an electrician needs to enter your home depends on the type of work that needs to be completed. Any work on receptacles, lights and more located on the inside or outside of your house will likely require an electrician to enter your home.

Ask electricians in your area to perform a video consultation instead of a traditional walk-through to assess the project. During the consultation, they should be able to tell you if they’ll need to enter your home or not.

I received a second opinion from Enoch after another electrician said my entire house needed to be rewired. Enoch sent someone out the next day. He arrived on time, checked the breaker box, tested the outlets, inspected wires and determined everything to be fine. Just to be sure, I got a third opinion from another company and still all good. The $95 service from Enoch was way better than the $4500 the other electrician wanted to rewire the house.

Quick response. However, because I’m in a big dollar zip code, most vendors tack on a higher fee. This seems to be the situation here. The quote is way too high. Already got the job done by licensed electrician for less than half the cost.

Mr. Thomas called to let me know when he would arrive. He came to my house, respecting Covid protocols. I gave him the rundown on what I wanted done and he was able to make both repairs within an hour. Lovely young man. Very good electrician.

We are extremely happy with the service provided by Team Enoch! They were very easy to communicate with and gave us an accurate estimate ahead of time based on photos and a description of the work we needed done. Our goal was to have an outlet to power a flat TV installed into the brick of our fireplace. Other electricians had told us the fireplace was too thick to install an outlet, so we had resigned ourselves to the fact that the outlet would have to be installed in the wall and a power cord run to the TV (not our first option). But, the electrician from Team Enoch took his time and found just the right spot to install the outlet, in the brick behind the TV, right where we wanted it. It looks great and we're so happy he took the time to do the job right! We would gladly recommend Team Enoch to family and friends.

We highly recommend Joe if you need an electrician. He was extremely timely, did a terrific job. We got several quotes ranging from 3-7,000 dollars. For our neighbor who was recently widowed, it was just a lot for her to take on. Joe did the job very affordablly for her. We highly recommend him for your electrical needs.

I’m thrilled! After years of wasting time, money & sanity, I FINALLY found a GREAT electrician. Benjamin responded to my request for bids very QUICKLY, and offered the best VALUE. Benjamin and Caleb arrived PROMPTLY, NEATLY, and with smiles. They put me at ease, which is crucial in a working relationship as a housewife, alone with men you’ve never met prior. Benjamin and Caleb are extremely efficient, knowledgeable and meticulous. They are confident problem solvers. I hired them to remove a massive lighting/ceiling fan and install a gorgeous, flush mount crystal piece, in my formal library. They then removed a broken, guest bedroom lighting/ceiling fan and installed the lighting/fan they removed from the library. They ran to the supply store and got me a new hang bar, for the guest bedroom fan, because the old one wasn’t a fit. This is the first time I’ve ever worked with a competent electrician. I’m thrilled! The formal lighting looks beautiful. Stop settling for mediocrity, and call KBM!

Absolutely top notch. I had a neutral that was showing hot in my media room the night before I was leaving for a week. Not to set expectations too high, but W3 was able to send Wesley out same day due to a cancellation. It took a long time of tracing wires from box to box, and he diligently stayed until 8pm when the job was done and everything was working as it should and up to code! Eternally grateful to this team and definitely have found my new first call electricians.

That was really bad experience, Let’s start with that , Jermey promised to show up by himself and introduced himself as a master Electrician, The day of the project he sent a nice guy that was running late more than a hour , and he doesn’t has license at all, I agreed with Jeremy on 3 hours project that will be payed $75 a hour, I sent him pictures and described everything detailed, The project took him like 6 hours ( cause he sent someone else) And he tried to fool me and add some fees to cover this hours. I will not recommend to use this guy, he is not honest and unprofessional. Be careful guys!!!
